Five Morgan Hill students sent home for wearing American flag T-shirts

2:11 PM By Lindsay Bryant

Five male students were asked to leave Live Oak High School this morning because they were wearing American flag T-shirts on Cinco de Mayo. Officials at the school could not be reached for comment, but one student said administrators called the T-shirts "incendiary."

"They said we were starting a fight, we were fuel to the fire," said Matt Dariano, a sophomore.

The five teens were sitting at a table outside during their brunch break around 10:10 a.m. when Assistant Principal Miguel Rodriguez asked two boys to take off their American flag bandannas that they were wearing on their heads. In the same conversation, student Dominic Maciel said, Rodriguez told the group to "walk with him to the office."

Dariano called his mother Diana, who spread the word to the other parents and all arrived soon after to have a conference with Rodriguez and Principal Nick Boden.

Maciel said they were told they must turn their T-shirts inside-out or be sent home. Maciel said they were told it wouldn't be considered a suspension but Rodriguez did not want any fights to break out among Mexican students and the group showing their American pride.

The boys said they thought turning the American flag inside-out was disrespectful, so all went home.

Dariano said Rodriguez indicated to him that while other students were wearing American flags, the group of five was "the easiest target to cause trouble."

"We were not going to start a fight. We wanted to show our pride," Dariano said. "In light of all of this, there are people with painted flags in red, green and white and yet the boys can't wear the American flag," Diana said.

I know San Mateo pretty well and can picture what has happened to your neighborhood - it’s the “worst case scenario” when you buy and then the municipality decisions drive your prop value into the toilet...and all for “Working class” housing. Section 8 housing is what drove us out of our town house in the burbs of DC - we were going to hang on to it but found out they let a Section 8 family move in when five cop cars came to bust their teen age son. Fortunately, we got a nice profit after four years but I bet it wouldn’t happen now...it sucks and we need to take our country back...

Give me a *#%$@&#% break!!! The kids with the US Flag shirts are “incendiary”??? YEAH, THEY are the ones to worry about... Truth is they couldn’t send home the MAJORITY of their students, so they just got rid of the ones proud of the country their school is actually IN!!!

Welcome to Obama-Nation, where being proud of your country is illegal (if that country is the USA)

Cinco de Mayo is mostly a marketing ploy by the beer manufacturers targeting ignorant yuppies and college kids.

for a 3 day war with France and they don’t celebrate it in Mexico.

Kinda like St. Patrick’s Day. Both are mostly American in nature.

Dame un cerveza, por favor.

the funny part is that Cinco De Mayo is used as a cultural experience and very few people actually know the history of the day.

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
A doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I have been to Mexico many times on Cinco De Mayo and can’t recall it being celebrated.

Most recent experience was last year during the fake swine flu outbreak.

That was fun. Nothing was open except a theme park and I was there on Cinco De Mayo. No party. No party in Play Del Carmen, Puerto Aventura.

Nada.

In the US, Cinco de Mayo is an excuse to get drunk and party. It's kinda like the made up holiday Kwanzaa.

My son was watching the local news with me tonight and they had something about on about it. He asked me what it was and I told him. Then he asked me why people in America were celebrating it. I told him "excellent question".

Morgan Hill? South of Frisco on 101, near Gilroy?

Yep, that's the one. I called it home for about 15 years. I skipped out of Gilroy early this evening specifically to avoid the Cinco de Mayo celebrations.

Dariano said Rodriguez indicated to him that while other students were wearing American flags, the group of five was "the easiest target to cause trouble."

This is easily translated: These American boys are on the "rougher" side and would have had no hesitation in responding with their fists to the taunts of Mexicans and hyphenated Americans.
