Kerry Threatens TV Stations Over Swift Boat Ad (Letter Contains "Obvious Lie"; BIG Kerry Stumble!)
National Review Online ^ | 8/5/04 | Jim Geraghty

Posted on 08/05/2004 4:27:59 PM PDT by KentTrappedInLiberalSeattle

Human Events reports that the DNC and the Kerry campaign are writing to television stations, stating that the Swift Boat ads is is "false" and "libelous" and that "your station may not responsibly air this advertisement."

At least one of their points in the letter is an obvious lie: "The advertisement contains statements by men who purport to have served on Senator John Kerry's SWIFT [sic] boat in Vietnam and one statement by a man pretending to be the doctor who treated Senator Kerry for one of his injuries."

Horsepucky.

Every vet in the ad says, "I served with John Kerry," but not one of them claims to have been in his boat. Most of the men are other swiftboat captains. They've been open and clear in their statements that they served in other swift boats operating within 50 yards on Kerry's side, and their statements are their observations on serving alongside him, not under him.

NR's own Byron York had the scoop on Louis Letson, the doctor, months ago. The Kerry letter insists that Letson is a "phony" because he didn't sign Kerry's sick call sheet.

The Los Angeles Times looked at the who-signed-the-form controversy back in May:

"Meehan questioned Letson's role, saying a J.C. Carreon signed Kerry's medical report of the wound. "This gentleman is not the man who is on the report," he said.

Letson said that Carreon, a lower-ranked "hospitalman," was "present at the time and he, in fact, made the entry into Lt. Kerry's medical record."

Bad move, Team Kerry. The letter from the lawyers turns this into a bigger story, and the argument that these men are "phony" doesn't seem all that strong.

So, if I understand this correctly, John Kerry is the only person to have server honorably in Viet Nam?

Everybody else that server is a Bush goon.

I need to study more. I just can't catch on to this liberal cognitive dissonance thing..

SWIFT [sic]

Actually the letter (probably written by Kerry himself) got this right. SWIFT is an acronym. --I've forgotten for what exactly.

Kerry's team is panicking again. A fun thing to watch.

Rush is right, sit back and enjoy.

Now we know why sKerry wanted Edwards on the team. He is first in line to sue everyone.

People hear that Kerry's war service is being trashed, McCain is angry, Bush dirty trick, etc.

People are already hearing that the Kerry response to the Swift Boat Vets is an outright lie. (Click onto the headline at Drudge right now, for instance, and see where that takes you. Look like something you'd imagine Kerry/Edwards want folks seeing...?) :)

I agree with Krauthammer - nothing good for the GOP/Bush will come out of this.

... whereas I agree with Rush (whose track record as an oracle is considerably better than Charles'): this is Kerry's latest self-inflicted wound.

You may be correct. I thought that the stuff on Clinton would stick but it didn't, just made him more popular.

I'm not sure your correct..... the democrats where successful with that commercials that killed Bush's chances with blacks.

At least I hope you (or Charles) are not correct....

I'd like someone to stick a fork in him once...

I originally thought that this ad was good. I have to say I am REALLY worried about the fallout on our side since the Dims are the best liars/spinners/smear merchants around. Does this worry anybody else? Krauthammer, Hume, O'Reilly, etc are all thinking this is going to make Bush/repubs look bad.

I just hope Bush doesn't get tarred with this...

Public person. Public Interest. Under the NY Times v. Sullivan test, it would be very tough for Kerry to prevail in a lawsuit, and the trial would do more harm than good. This smacks of "prior restraint". The DEMS are out-Ashcrofting Ashcroft if they go down this road.

Rush Limbaugh said the other day that the Kerry team has hired 6000 lawyers to sue the states that have a close presidential race this November! (Florida deja-vu all aver again!)

Rats are now threatening to sue TV stations (because of the viet-vets against Kerry)? (Rats can dish it out but can't take it-lolol! Kerry GOONS can't handle it-lolol!)

We should threaten to sue all the stations that play the move-on dot.ogre adds!

Don't do your opponent's job for them by rolling over and playing dead voluntarily. :)

Yeah, some (perhaps many) in the media will attempt to "spin" all this (somehow) into a plus for TerAYza's Pool Boy. And...? So...? You have a compuer; you're online, and you have the facts. Cowboy up, and help get the word out.

It's no longer "enough," in these days of blatant liberal media bias, simply to sit back and hope our "masters" at the alphabet networks feel like doing the right thing on our collective behalf, just this once. The vast majority of people now get more of their news and info from online sources than they do the television evening news. That works in our favor as much as it does anyone else's. :)

I will say this - the Swifites better have their t's crossed and their i's dotted.

See post 9... The ads arrived at the stations with sworn affadavits and documentation. I'm assuming that these guys saw this coming and were prepared.

I thought that the stuff on Clinton would stick but it didn't, just made him more popular.

Clinton was an aberation, in every sense of the word. The things he got away with would have sunk anyone else's career.

Combine this with the fact that it FINALLY is beginning to sink in to the moderate crowd that the media is not unbiased, so they will have to seek out the truth from other places rather than relying on Rather & Co. and they will believe it when they see it.

See: Fox News (only a blip on the charts in 2000)

I can't believe some of the defeatist WHINING I'm hearing about this ad! One minute, we're complaining about how we wish our side would do the same thing those slimes at MoveOn.org would do. We do that and now some are crying about this possibly backfiring?

Face it, people! The media, the DemocRATS and the other leftist shills are going to cry like babies no matter what! We can create the most positive, uplifting ad around and those sycophantic, anti-Bush Kool-aid GUZZLERS will find fault with that! There is no pleasing these RATS and it is high time our side grew a SPINE and start serving up the TRUTH, raw and in-their-face! They can't complain about being mean-spirited; that's all their whole campaign is based on!

Enough of this whining, for goodness sake! So what if some of our people don't like this ad! Do you? I'm tired of every time the media says "Boo!", we are running like scared chickens! They don't like us and they never will until we drink the same mindnumbing swill that they guzzle down!

DEAL WITH IT!

I am sick of being told we can't fight back. The Democrats can call Bush all sorts of foul names but we are not allowed to question Kerry on anything. MM and Whoopi Goldberg can call Bush a liar and every name in the book but we can't say a word about Kerry. No wonder Bush can't pull ahead. He's always on the defensive. I say that the Swift Boat Vets should play their message loud and often. It's time we fight back.
