If I'm not mistaken, at least one of the signers had his sons captured by the British. They offered to let that signer's sons go, if he would renounce his support for the Declaration. He refused. His sons were executed.
Can you imagine anyone able to do that today?

I think your post is a million dollar bit of insight that deserves it's own tread.
That is the thing about Kerry's position: He admitted to atrocities in Viet Nam, in from of the Senate committe in '71 - but everyone else is to blame but John Kerry. The only way to not have your manhood questioned by John Kerry is to be wuss enough to support his position that he is the only American war hero. Period. Not just in Vietnam.Kerry never accords anyone else respect for valor equal to his own, and never accords anyone else any respect at all unless they are liberals. Whether or not you have a bunch of comrades testifying against his specific claims you have to understand that actual heroes respect the valor of others too much to brag. Kerry respects the valor of others not at all, and FWIW my opinion of his description of his own valor is that he protests too much. Far, far too much.
He can boast as he will about how he will keep us unmanly people safe, but the real question of a Democratic candidate has to be, "Where are you going to find a qualified Secretary of Defense who is willing to work for you?" Because there hasn't been a good Democratic SecDef in half a century, all the way back to the Truman Administration. Even if you think Cohen was OK, he was a Republican. Kerry will not personally call these men liars. Nor will Kerry have his own attorney call them liars. So he gets the DNC lawyers and the Kerry/Edwards lawyers to call them liars and insulates himself from scrutiny and libel.

I'll add more bad statements by the presumed lawyers. First of all .. they have no leverage or legal standing to tell any organization that they "may not" run the ad.
Secondly, there are 2 key words missing from the letter .. CEASE AND DESIST. Those words are legal speak or semi-quoting what the actual legal statute says.
But .. in order to say "cease and desist", you must have legal standing .. and it's very obvious that the lawyers do not.

Yep, I read the Kerry threat letter and it is full of Clintonian evasions and half-truths. It has opened a can of worms, though the media only have a taste for Republican worms (bad metaphor!).
There are nine year olds in East LA that have been shot at more times than Kerry ever was during his four months in Vietnam. That doesn't mean they're qualified to be President.
