Kerry Threatens TV Stations Over Swift Boat Ad (Letter Contains "Obvious Lie"; BIG Kerry Stumble!)
National Review Online ^ | 8/5/04 | Jim Geraghty

Posted on 08/05/2004 4:27:59 PM PDT by KentTrappedInLiberalSeattle

Human Events reports that the DNC and the Kerry campaign are writing to television stations, stating that the Swift Boat ads is is "false" and "libelous" and that "your station may not responsibly air this advertisement."

At least one of their points in the letter is an obvious lie: "The advertisement contains statements by men who purport to have served on Senator John Kerry's SWIFT [sic] boat in Vietnam and one statement by a man pretending to be the doctor who treated Senator Kerry for one of his injuries."

Horsepucky.

Every vet in the ad says, "I served with John Kerry," but not one of them claims to have been in his boat. Most of the men are other swiftboat captains. They've been open and clear in their statements that they served in other swift boats operating within 50 yards on Kerry's side, and their statements are their observations on serving alongside him, not under him.

NR's own Byron York had the scoop on Louis Letson, the doctor, months ago. The Kerry letter insists that Letson is a "phony" because he didn't sign Kerry's sick call sheet.

The Los Angeles Times looked at the who-signed-the-form controversy back in May:

"Meehan questioned Letson's role, saying a J.C. Carreon signed Kerry's medical report of the wound. "This gentleman is not the man who is on the report," he said.

Letson said that Carreon, a lower-ranked "hospitalman," was "present at the time and he, in fact, made the entry into Lt. Kerry's medical record."

Bad move, Team Kerry. The letter from the lawyers turns this into a bigger story, and the argument that these men are "phony" doesn't seem all that strong.

You got the Edwards angle right! US Navy Dr. Letson was the attending physician when Kerry arrived for treatment of a wound that Dr. Letson described as a scratch. This is obviously grounds for a malpractice suit since Kerry was awarded the PH for the scratch. It was a combat scratch. Litigation festering.

The Christmas '68 episode IS an obvious lie. Nixon was the President-Elect in December 1968. We wouldn't be involved in Cambodia until 1970. So something doesn't pass the smell test here. A journalist should be able to spot this one immediately and call the claims Kerry made back then into question.

"The advertisement contains statements by men who purport to have served on Senator John Kerry's SWIFT [sic] boat in Vietnam..."

This is very odd because McCain used the same exact misrepresentation of "on". Kerry and McCain are speaking from the same contrived page, he has his assignment.

"I deplore this kind of politics,” McCain said. “I think the ad is dishonest and dishonorable. As it is, none of these individuals served on the boat (Kerry) commanded.

Traitor to his party working for traitor to his country. *** If any of them DID say they served ON the boat, he would be the one that the Democrats planted so as to destroy the credibility of the entire group. There is no way that McCain makes this statement unless he is in absolute cahoots with the Democrats. If any reporter asked him this simple question:

"You claimed that these Swift boat officers claimed they served on the same boat as Kerry, when did they do that?"

...McCain would need to retire or change party on the spot. It shows what complete control of the media that they need to keep their house of cards standing.

There is a certain contingent on this forum that's mortally afraid of getting mud on their tassled loafers.

Call 'em what they really are, hellinahandcart. Call 'em what they really are:

Bush is right to distance himself from the ad, and the vets are right to go ahead with this NO MATTER WHAT. People need to learn to deal with that and stop cringing and trembling about it.

Bingo.

Kent, the kerry "team" attempt to quelch the Swift-Vets made me have a "flashback" of 1988 with Gary "Catch-Me-If-You-Can" Hart, and his little "boat problem".....

...if only there was some BRAVE reporter who was maybe looking for a way to get a little recognition for one of those "Pulitzer" prize thingees.....

There seems to be something much larger at stake here, the right of ordinary citizens who are not part of any elite of either major party, or of any media or academic elite, to speak out the truth.
