The Placebo President: How a Rapist can be a Policy Feminist

For the first time, the chairman of the independent commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks is saying publicly that 9/11 could have and should have been prevented, reports CBS News Correspondent Randall Pinkston.

"This is a very, very important part of history and we've got to tell it right," said Thomas Kean.

"As you read the report, you're going to have a pretty clear idea what wasn't done and what should have been done," he said. "This was not something that had to happen."

ADDENDUM 12.13.03:

As for pathologic self-interest, check out Richard Miniter's C-SPAN interview; the interview is contained in my latest virtual hillary movie (below), hillary talks:ON TERROR; it is absolutely devastating for the clintons. Miniter lays out in sickening detail the clintons' monumental failure to protect America.

Note in particular Madeleine Albright's shocking reason given at the time of the USS Cole attack why the clinton administration should not respond militarily. It tell us everything we need to know about the clintons. It tell us why clinton redux is an absolutely suicidal notion.

Notwithstanding their cowardice, corruption, perfidy and essential stupidity, the clintons, according to Albright, made their decision not to go after the terrorists primarily to enhance their own legacy and power. The clintons calculated that such inaction would MAXIMIZE THEIR CHANCES TO RECEIVE THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE. No matter that that inaction would also maximize the terrorists' power, maximize America's danger.

The Democratic Party's Problem Transcends Its Anti-War Contingent2

The Nobel as clinton Pavlovian stimulus--a timeline
(In this season of gift horses and attack dogs, let us not forget the good clinton dog, Buddy...)

To this day, clinton seems not to understand that bin Laden is -- and was in 1996 -- an enemy of the state, not a simple criminal.

Clinton does not get it: the same terrorist --the terrorist he refused to take--hit the same building in '93.(To be sure, clinton cluelessness is only part of the explanation for this monumental blunder; other critical components include clinton cowardice, criminality, rapaciousness and, that which permeates everything clinton, concern for his/their noxious legacy.)

Notwithstanding this, to hear clinton tell it, his disastrous decision not to take bin Laden when offered up on a silver platter by Sudan, (arguably the worst decision ever made by a president), derived from his scrupulous avoidance of abusing power and trashing laws...

Yeah, right.

Left-Wing Talk Radio--'It's the terrorism, stupid'.

he clintons' malfeasance-malpractice constellation was both a necessary and sufficient cause of 9/11. That is to say, had the clintons (BOTH of them--it was a "co-presidency," remember?) competently and honestly and courageously and selflessly done their job, bin Laden would be but a footnote today; 9/11, and perhaps even more important, the exponential growth of al Qaeda, would not have happened. It's really that simple.

PART 1
PART 2

isten carefully to "Left-Wing Talk Radio--'It's the terrorism, stupid'." Hear clinton cluelessness, cowardice, narcissism, smallness, banality, fecklessness, ineptitude, prevarication, corruption, perfidy and utter failure directly from the rapist, himself. (The perfect foil for President Bush.)

Pay special attention to Dan Rather's ruminations about terrorism hitting the U.S. "bigtime" during the clintons' tenure; the unvarnished truth from the left, for a change. Rather was, apparently, caught off guard by the horror of 9/11... or perhaps he was just plain angry at the clintons, the obvious necessary and sufficient cause of this horror. (NB Gov. Kean.)

In particular, connect the following dots: the '93 WTC bombing. a certain bin Laden protégé and clinton's admission that he passed up bin Laden. Note clinton's spurious argument for this monumental failure.

To this day, clinton seems not to understand that bin Laden is -- and was in 1996 -- an enemy of the state, not a simple criminal.

Clinton does not get it: the same terrorist --the terrorist he refused to take--hit the same building in '93. (To be sure, clinton cluelessness is only part of the explanation for this monumental blunder; other critical components include clinton cowardice, criminality, rapaciousness and, that which permeates everything clinton, concern for his/their noxious legacy.)

Notwithstanding this, to hear clinton tell it, his disastrous decision not to take bin Laden when offered up on a silver platter by Sudan, (arguably the worst decision ever made by a president), derived from his scrupulous avoidance of abusing power and trashing laws...

Yeah, right.

HEAR:

  • the attacks on America

  • Dan Rather ruminating on the terrorism that came to America "bigtime" during clinton years

  • Dan Rather report of threat by OBL protégé, Ramzi Yousef to clinton FBI ("We WILL complete the job.")

  • the clinton non-response to terror

  • FDR response (says national security a president's raison d'être)

  • Bush response, "I can hear YOU...," "I will not wait on events, while dangers gather," etc.

  • Mike Moran "Osama bin Laden, you can kiss my royal Irish ass" battle cry

  • "go home hillary!" chant, etc.

*Thanx to Cloud William for text and audio

LEHRER: President Bush, your closing statement, sir.

PRESIDENT BUSH: Three weeks from now--two weeks from tomorrow, America goes to the polls and you're going to have to decide who you want to lead this country ...

On foreign affairs, some think it's irrelevant. I believe it's not. We're living in an interconnected world...And if a crisis comes up, ask who has the judgment and the experience and, yes, the character to make the right decision?

And, lastly, the other night on character Governor Clinton said it's not the character of the president but the character of the presidency. I couldn't disagree more. Horace Greeley said the only thing that endures is character. And I think it was Justice Black who talked about great nations, like great men, must keep their word.

And so the question is, who will safeguard this nation, who will safeguard our people and our children? I need your support, I ask for your support. And may God bless the United States of America.

(Applause)

Clinton 101 Won't Cover Rape Allegations

NewsMax.com ^ | January 29, 2003 | Carl Limbacher and NewsMax.com Staff

University of Arkansas Professor Margaret Scranton has told reporters that her much ballyhooed course on the presidency of Bill Clinton won't ignore the myriad of scandals that plagued the ex-president's eight years in the White House.

But apparently there's one scandal the presidential historian won't be covering - Juanita Broaddrick's allegation the she was raped by Clinton in 1978.

Here's how Ms. Scranton handled the issue when questioned last week on MSNBC's "Nachman" show by WABC Radio duo John Batchelor and Paul Alexander.

ALEXANDER: Professor, will you deal with the rape allegations?

SCRANTON: Frankly, I'm not sure what you're talking about.

ALEXANDER: You didn't follow the story? How about Juanita Broaddrick?

SCRANTON: Several people have sent me the Broaddrick material. We have a lot of what I call sort of unsolicited (material) people want the students to be aware
of.

BATCHELOR: No, it was on NBC for...

ALEXANDER: It aired on television. Rape allegations. Juanita Broaddrick.

BATCHELOR: You can see them.

NACHMAN: Well let me jump in here. Professor...

SCRANTON: I have three copies. Thank you very much. (End of Excerpt)

Shays Shocker Clinton Raped Broaddrick Twice.

8/02/00 10:55 p.m.
By NR staff

Connecticut Rep. Chris Shays said on a talk radio show Wednesday that, based on secret evidence he reviewed during the impeachment controversy, he believes President Clinton raped Juanita Broaddrick, not once, but twice.

Talk-show host Tom Scott of Clear Channel Broadcasting, New Haven (WELI 960) asked Shays about the mysterious impeachment "evidence room," prompting the GOP moderate to say that Broaddrick "disclosed that she had been raped, not once, but twice" to Judiciary Committee investigators.

Shays, who is often hailed by the New York Times for his independent judgment and good sense, found the evidence compelling:

"I believed that he had done it. I believed her that she had been raped 20 years ago. And it was vicious rapes, it was twice at the same event." Asked point blank if the president is a rapist, Shays said, "I would like not to say that it way. But the bottom line is that I believe that he did rape Broaddrick."

And Shays voted against impeachment!

Yeah, I'm sure there's nothing that my family, friends, and loved ones would LOVE to get in their stocking more than a CD detailing a rape. Maybe they'll play it during Christmas dinner!

Good idea, just REALLY bad timing for this in my opinion. How would that enrich anyone's holiday?

Why does the press continue to ignore the Juanita Broaddrick story?

Monday, January 3, 2000

By Julia Malone

WASHINGTON- Among the outgoing year's momentous events, one remains unprobed by a curiously uncurious press corps.

More than 10 months ago, an Arkansas nursing home owner named Juanita Broaddrick accused the president of brutally raping her in 1978.

Millions of Americans watched NBC's "Dateline" interview as she tearfully described Bill Clinton, then state attorney-general and candidate for governor, holding her down and biting into her lip to subdue her. A former political supporter, Broaddrick had no apparent motive for concocting her story, and she sought no financial gain.

In response, the president issued a one-sentence denial through his lawyer.
He has yet to respond in person.

"Can you not simply deny it, sir?" ABC's Sam Donaldson asked him at a news conference in March. But Clinton passed up the opportunity to comment or to express outrage that such a charge might be raised against him.

The news media, which have hounded presidents and their staffs until they receive full answers on other subjects, have not pursued the rape question. In interviews and news conferences, no reporter has followed up on Donaldson's query.

Yet as the year closed, the nagging question has reappeared on the presidential campaign trail. Perhaps as the new century begins and Clinton makes his exit, more will be discovered. Here is a summary of the developments in the 1999Juanita Broaddrick story:

December 1998. As the House of Representatives moves toward its final vote on the Clinton impeachment, word spreads about allegations by "Jane Doe #5" among the secret materials gathered by independent counsel Kenneth Starr. Wavering Republicans are urged by colleagues to read the testimony about a sexual assault from 1978. Some lawmakers emerge from the guarded reading room bent on voting to impeach.

By February 1999, the Internet and political gossip circles have it that "Jane Doe #5" is Juanita Broaddrick, a fifty-something business executive from Van Buren, Ark., who wants to keep her privacy. However, NBC correspondent Lisa Myers persuades her to grant an interview for the program "Dateline." Even so, NBC delays airing the startling charges and cites the need for more fact checking until after the Senate impeachment trial ends in acquittal. The network also waits until the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post publish their own interviews with Broaddrick. On Feb. 19, the president's private lawyer, David Kendall, issues a formal denial. "Any allegation that the president assaulted Mrs. Broaddrick more than 20 years ago is absolutely false," it says. "Beyond that, we're not going to comment."

On Feb. 24, NBC's "Dateline" airs the taped interview in which Broaddrick says that Clinton's bite left her lip bruised and swollen. She says his parting advice was to "put some ice on it." After the interview is aired, the TV networks, including NBC's Nightly News, shy away from the story.

March 19: At the president's first full-scaled news conference after his impeachment, Sam Donaldson confronts Clinton directly. "There's been a statement made by my attorney," the president says. "He speaks for me, and I think he spoke quite clearly." In the months that follow, reporters drop the issue. Feminists say little or nothing. Rape crisis center workers acknowledge that Broaddrick's case, including her reluctance to come forward, is typical of victims of sexual assault. But they decline to speak against Clinton. Some cite the federal funding they receive as a result of the Violence Against Women Act, which was signed into law by Clinton.

On Dec. 3 former independent counsel Starr is asked at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast whether he believes the Broaddrick charges and responds that they are "sobering to the point of devastating." He adds that the investigators who interviewed Broaddrick "found her entirely credible."

On Dec. 14, a public forum for Vice President Al Gore in Derry, N.H., brings the Broaddrick issue back into focus. A woman asks Gore whether the rape charge has changed his view of Clinton. The vice president gives a rambling and stammering response in which he says, "I didn't know what to make of her claim" but acknowledges that he had not seen Broaddrick's "Dateline" interview.

On Dec. 16, a leading defender of the president and former White House aide Lanny Davis remarks on a TV talk show that Broaddrick had changed her story to the FBI. "How do you know, Lanny?" responds interviewer Sean Hannity on MSNBC.

On Dec.20, Broaddrick files a lawsuit in federal district court seeking any records on her kept by the White House or Justice Department. The complaint, filed by the conservative group Judicial Watch, cites the Davis comments as evidence that the Clinton administration was using government records as ammunition against Broaddrick.

Dec. 21, White House legal spokesman Jim Kennedy tells reporters that there will be no comment on the Broaddrick lawsuit.

f you look beyond the cd's disturbing content to its intended effect, you will see, I believe, a gift that is wholly (holy!) consistent with this time of year.

We -- and by 'we' I mean all of us -- are at a watershed in human history, with our very survival in the balance; and unfortunately for all of us, it is the American electorate -- largely uninformed, disinformed and incited by the electronic demagogue (in the pre-TV era, an associated, natural apathy protected us from this fomented ignorance) -- who will determine our collective fate.

In my view, there is no greater argument for this very cd at this very time.

he clintons' malfeasance-malpractice constellation was both a necessary and sufficient cause of 9/11. Hamilton (or Madison) discussed the importance of wisdom and virtue in Federalist 57. "The aim of every political constitution is, or ought to be, first to obtain for rulers men who possess most wisdom to discern, and most virtue to pursue, the common good of the society; and in the next place, to take the most effectual precautions for keeping them virtuous whilst they continue to hold their public trust."

(Contrast this with clinton, who recklessly, reflexively and feloniously subordinates the common good to his personal appetites.)

Because the Framers did not anticipate the demagogic efficiency of the electronic bully pulpit, they ruled out the possibility of an MTV mis-leader (and impeachment-thwarter!) like clinton. In Federalist No. 64, John Jay said: "There is reason to presume" the president would fall only to those "who have become the most distinguished by their abilities and virtue." He imagined that the electorate would not "be deceived by those brilliant appearances of genius and patriotism which, like transient meteors, sometimes mislead as well as dazzle."

(If the clinton debacle teaches us anything, it is this: If we are to retain our democracy in this age of the electronic demagogue, we must recalibrate the constitutional balance of power.)

Mia T,  THE OTHER NIXON

The Common Man

by Mia T

Balance is anathema to bill clinton.
bill clinton thrives on instability.
He gets off living on the edge.
Disequilibrium undergirds his every scheme:
An electorate distracted,
a balance of power fractured.

Filegate and The clinton Putsch,
committed in tandem,
the product of a careful criminal calculus,
at once empowered clinton
and disemboweled his opponents.
clinton was now free to betray with abandon
not only our trust,
but the Constitution as well.

As if threats of extortion and injustice were not enough,
clinton also embarked on a campaign to quash dissent
-- "partisan, mean-spirited!" he said --
demonstrating once again his distaste for democracy
and his predilection for criminal overkill.

It's easy to see
how the common man in the 1990s
could imbibe such notions.
And the Zeitgeist emboldened the Philanderer-King.

Distrusting
the common man's essential wisdom,
the founding fathers appropriately distanced him
from the decision-making process.

But the founding fathers did not anticipate
electronic media or demographic science
which transmuted our democratic republic
into an illusory direct democracy,
into a de facto -- if indirect -- dictatorship.

By conservative estimate,
there is now enough fiberoptic cable
for the MTV tyrant to hang us all
(and to make it look like suicide).

But even as Clinton fails to grasp the scandal's metabolism
he understands all too well its most significant byproduct.
You can see it in his eyes.

Once reflecting a Machiavellian confidence,
they now dart back and forth reflexively,
searching futilely for approval,
attempting desperately to dispel his own certain knowledge
that his moral authority is gone. . .
forever.

 Mia T

It is natural for man to indulge in the illusions of hope.
We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth,
and listen to the song of that siren
till she transforms us into beasts.
Is this the part of wise men,
engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty?
Are we disposed to be the number of those
who, having eyes, see not,
and having ears, hear not,
the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation?
For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost,
I am willing to know the whole truth;
to know the worst, and to provide for it.

This Christmas meditation was written in 1989 when the hostilities between Armenians and Azerbaijanis in Nagorno-Karabakh had flared up. The conflict had been preceded by a quite unwarranted and savage massacre of Armenians in Sumgait in Azerbaijan. And in April of that year Russian troops had violently attacked a peaceful demonstration in the streets of Tbilisi in Georgia. With all these events in mind, and the prospect of more national conflicts within the Soviet Union, Fr Alexander ponders the presence of evil and violence in the world. Today, with the experience of Chechnya and Bosnia, his words are still relevant.

Karabakh stands in my mind as a collective symbol for the innumerable tragedies which seem to be erupting one after another in so many parts of the world.

Though the causes for these outbreaks of hatred and violence may be different in each place, the overall picture is one of disaster. Remember the squares of Beijing and Tbilisi, think of Ulster and Jerusalem, Sumgait and Kabul, think of Africa and Latin America... India too, traditionally a land of peace, has witnessed bloodshed. One can't help feeling that peoples and tribes, countries and governments, leaders and crowds - the whole human race is on the path to self-destruction.

Ideologies, traditions, political and national slogans, cults and languages - all have been used as weapons against human beings. If the most unnatural war is civil war [...] then shouldn't we finally admit that we are witnessing a world-wide civil war between all the 'children of Adam', a war that is tearing the body of humanity apart?

This warfare is ceaseless. Terrorism and hatred know no truce. They are fuelled by lawlessness, crime and drug addiction. It seems as if in our age a barrier has been broken, and the floods of anger let loose. This is happening now, before our eyes, but the symptoms have been here for a long time.

Have we forgotten the awesome words of the Dies Irae? Do we need to be reminded of the Nazis, the Stalinists, the Khmer Rouge! Should we forget and bury our heads in the sand? But that won't stop the growth of evil!

Yet now today the Christmas star, the star of Bethlehem, shines once again, as it did two thousand years ago, over a world in turmoil. It calls us and reminds us of eternity.

That is why Christmas is more than just the 'children's festival', or a family get-together, more than just a holiday. For some people, the Christmas star is just a decoration on the Christmas tree, but those who think like that are missing the real significance of this holy day.

The star of Christ reminds people of their higher calling. It reminds us of the sacred spark which the Creator has placed in us, the spark which ignites in us love and freedom, faith and creativity, compassion and fellow-feeling.

Someone once asked the philosopher Nicolas Berdyaev the paradoxical question: 'Can God create a stone that he himself could not move?' And Berdyaev promptly answered: 'Yes, that stone is man.'

The church has always taught that people cannot be delivered from evil, nor the natural world either, without their active participation. We are made in the image and likeness of the animals, but as regards our essential being, we are made in the image and likeness of our Creator. Therefore freedom, which is our inalienable attribute, gives us the possibility of transforming our animal nature, and of activating those wonderful potentialities which are within us. But is this possible if people take only themselves as the starting point?

For several centuries now the world has been nurturing the illusion that it can. It has tried not to notice 'Bethlehem', and not to see the gentle shining of that gospel star.

Intoxicated with science, proud of our power over the elements, we human beings have put our trust in our knowledge of the laws of nature, expecting peace and happiness to come from them. But it hasn't happened. Knowledge, when in the grip of that animal nature of ours with its reasoning powers, has not saved civilization, but has become its memento mori, its sword of Damocles. And the fault for this lies not in knowledge itself, nor in reason which is God's gift to us, but in the eclipse of the spirit which has not been able to withstand the force of the beast.

We human beings have relied on the ideals of secular, this-worldly humanism, which our century has taken such pride in. We thought we could do without the star of Bethlehem, since we had found our own tablets of the law. However, these tablets proved to be as fragile as glass, and the first blows of the World War smashed them to smithereens. Humanism was pitilessly crushed under the boots of the dictators whom the crowds followed blindly. So the beast had only lain low for a while, and with new strength once again swept over the planet, crushing everything in its path. And yet, the fault lies not in humanism as such, but in forgetting the higher, divine sources of the good.

We human beings thought that technology, comfort and a life which would guarantee the best possible conditions of work and rest, would solve all problems. But the example of the highly- developed countries has shown this to be an illusion. The example of these countries shows us vividly what moral, cultural and ecological dangers technical civilization is fraught with, and where satiety, 'ethical materialism', and 'consumerism' will lead. Of course, it's a good thing that people should be well fed and clothed, should have adequate housing, and be able to use modern technology in their daily lives. But to make of these things the only ideal is to diminish the purpose of life, and to lead people into the dead-end of materialism.

We human beings have for centuries dreamed of a transformation of society bringing prosperity and well-being to all, where liberty, equality and fraternity would reign. But the experience of the terror in the days of the French Revolution was already a warning and a prototype of everything that has come to pass in our own times. When the social order is taken as sacred, rather than people and their lives, their rights and dignity, then in the name of that social order thousands and perhaps millions may be destroyed as if they were nothing but worthless scum. Of course the idea of improving the social order is a noble and valuable one. But when that aim becomes sufficient unto itself and claims to be a religion and destroys individuals, then it leads to the opposite result.

I would remind you that prescriptions for general happiness have been around since very early times. Was it not in classical times that the cult of science was born, when the Epicureans preached hedonism and the cult of pleasure (though incidentally Epicurus himself was not to blame for this)? Was it not Plato who created his system of a police state, from which poets, free-thinkers and dissidents were expelled for the sake of the 'good of the citizens'?

The past has also left us the dread idea of a forcibly imposed religion. This is not to be wondered at, for if people turned the ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity into terror and new forms of slavery, why should not the same happen with religion?

But, you may object, religion, unlike the cult of science, hedonism, secular ethics or political utopias has to do with the spirit and the higher Being. That's certainly true. But when religion becomes an instrument in the hands of those in power, when its adherents use force, then faith loses its true nature and becomes the servant of political passions and the 'interests' of a particular social group. In many ways, our present spiritual crisis bears traces of that counterfeit, that metamorphosis of religion, when religion is darkened by fanaticism and violence and becomes merged with interests of the state (which is by definition imperfect).

'Karabakh' (understood symbolically) did not spring out of bare soil. Today we are beginning to understand that, however much the world has gained, it has lost even more. Now the time of decision and choice has come.

This is what the star of Christ, Christmas Day, reminds us of, the day when the shepherds of Bethlehem heard the song: 'Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace and goodwill towards men'. When the Son of Man - the Son of God - was born, a new power entered the stream of history, the power of love and spiritual transformation. To all who follow it, this star is not only a beacon in a dark world; it pours into them the mysterious energy of the spirit revealing the image and likeness of God.

Christ comes to people not in a halo of earthly wisdom, not on the shoulders of legionaries, and not with a social charter. The word of the gospel speaks to our hearts and minds, not just to change our 'ideology', but to make us into 'a new creation'.

The world stands at a crossroads. Perhaps we have reached the end of civilization.

The Pharisees, proud of their ancient heritage said: 'We are the sons of Abraham.' But John the Baptist rebuked them, saying that if they did not repent, God could raise up new children of Abraham from stones [Luke 3.8].

In exactly the same way, we now have to understand that unless we find the right path, our century may be the last in history. Isn't the Creator free to begin again from the beginning, perhaps with the little islets which will survive a nuclear catastrophe? Or with another planet, with another humanity? But I don't want to believe that.

When I look at Rublev's icon of the Trinity, it brings to my mind the Bible story from which Rublev took his subject [Gen. 18]. The Lord appeared on earth in the form of the three travellers in order to test, for the last time, the impious and sinful cities [of Sodom and Gomorrah]. And Abraham, the 'father of the faithful' prayed that the cities should be spared for the sake of a handful of the righteous. Alas, there were so few that God chose to lead them out of the doomed Sodom and Gomorrah.

But in us Christians, the hope lives that our common home, our earth, all the fair things made by mankind, will escape the fate of Sodom. We think of the self-sacrifice and heroism of the ascetics, of all the prayer and struggle, of all the service to one's neighbour, of all the compassion which shine in the darkness of the twentieth century. We remember the faithfulness to Christ, even to the death, of the new Russian martyrs,(1) and Martin Luther King; we remember Mother Maria and the heroes of the Resistance, those who kept their hearts pure during the reign of madness and hate. We remember the holiness of the Russian starets Siluan(2) living on Mount Athos, of Mother Teresa and her fellow-workers in India; we remember the sublime and noble thoughts of Berdyaev and Teilhard de Chardin, and the self-giving of Mahatma Gandhi, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Bishop Helder C‚mara. We remember the doctors and teachers, writers and philosophers, creative artists, politicians and countless others among our contemporaries who challenge the kingdom of materialism, greed, consumerism, evil and violence. They showed the world what it means to be faithful to Christ, even though some of them were not consciously Christians. Did not Christ himself say, 'Not everyone who says to me "Lord! Lord!" will enter the kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of my heavenly Father'? [Matt. 7.21].

We also believe that this invincible power of good is rooted in human nature, in our divided and contradictory selves, and is nourished from the same source which created, sustains and gives life to the universe. That power for good is waiting for us. It has revealed itself to us. Now it's our turn to respond.

1. The 'new Russian martyrs' refers to those who died for their faith during the Soviet persecutions.[return]

2. St Siluan (1866-1938) was a Russian peasant who became an ascetic on Mount Athos. On his remarkable teachings, see Wisdom From Mount Athos: the Writings of Staretz Silouan, by Archimandrite Sophrony, translated from the Russian by Rosemary Edmonds. St Vladimir's Seminary Press, Crestwood, New York 1974; Archimandrite Sophrony, The Monk of Mount Athos: StaretzSilouan, translated from the Russian by Rosemary Edmonds, Mowbrays 1973.[return]

This meditation was first published in the popular newspaper Sovershenno Sekretno, No. 7, 1989, and reprinted in Kul'tura i dukhovnoe vozrozhdenie. It has been very slightly abbreviated in translation.

"The world stands at a crossroads. Perhaps we have reached the end of civilization...we now have to understand that unless we find the right path, our century may be the last in history."

Complete agreement and a worthy motive.
