Survivor of the Sinking of the California on Dec 7, 1941 interview. “Oral History Interview with Charles E. Daugherty, June 19, 2009” Audio

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Charles E Daugherty. Daugherty joined the Navy in 1939. He received basic training at Great Lakes and was aboard the USS California (BB-44) during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He remained at his battle station as a phone talker, nearly suffocating as the ship’s ventilation system malfunctioned. When the order was given to abandon ship, Daugherty was carried up two flights of stairs. Then a ferry came by and Daugherty stepped aboard, hiding in a sand pile for the remainder of the attack. The next day, he returned to the ship and found 12 casualties at his battle station. Daugherty spent the remainder of the war aboard YO-170, refueling ships in the Pacific Northwest. He recalls a celebration in downtown Seattle on V-J Day. After discharge, he worked for 30 years cleaning ships, aircraft, and motor transports at various docks.

A day that will live in infamy. Three of my four uncles served in WWII. My father wanted to serve, but he flunked the physical three times due to a duodenal ulcer. He was a scoutmaster. His scout troop went to work supporting the war effort. They raised a victory garden. They collected materials needed in the war effort, and they sold $70,000 in war bonds.

The troop’s founding Scout master was Rabbi Alexander Goode, who was one of the Four Chaplains, who went down on the Dorchester, after giving up their life jackets to other military passengers who needed them.

Strangely enough the sister of chuck, in the interview, was married to my grandfather. Anyway..HE was in the South Pacific as part of the 871 (831st? Can’t remember). AAEB or army airforce engineer battalion. They did a LOT of work, some of which the sea-bees got credit for in the eyes of the public at least. They would go to a rugged island, literally a jungle. And in a few months have graveled roads roads, a quarry, saw mills, hospitals, barracks, power station and lines, dugouts, sewers, water treatments and yes of course an airbase. AAEBs would do all of that…even sometimes build wharfs for the navy!

The Japanese were absolutely dismayed at our ability to build stuff and work.

He was on several Islands…I’ll try and get his papers out and look it up (that one does sound familiar).

He was in the 821st AAEB.

First base was Sam Fran spring of ‘42 and Oregon for a month
Sailed on the USS Klip to Fiji Isalnds. July ‘42 to Jan ‘44.
Sailed on the Meteor to the Russel Isalnds from Jan to April ‘44
Sailed on the Mintaka to Los Negros/Admirality Isles Apr-Oct ‘44
Sailed on 4 LSTs to Leyte Philippines Oct ‘44 to Feb ‘45 (saw combat)
Sailed on 2 LSTs (multiple trips) to Samar P.I. Feb-may ‘45
Saliled on 4 LSTs to Manila P.I. May-wars end ‘45
