A bomb threat forced military officials to lock down Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. By the afternoon, it was back to normal for the busy Oahu base, after its gates were closed for four hours. The ripple effects of the bomb threat were also felt around Pearl Harbor.
A line of traffic stretched out from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam after its gates were closed at 9:39 a.m. Drivers not only waited to get in, but also were unable to leave because of a security incident.
Piper Berg and her friend spent much of their morning waiting to get onto the base. They knew something was going on when they pulled up, but didn't expect it would still take hours to get in.
"We had heard about it from people on base, they got an alert to close their windows and lock their doors," stated Berg.
There was a bomb threat on the base.
About 2 hours after the initial call, the Navy's explosive disposal unit was seen leaving the front gate.
The military advised those north of South Avenue, and west of North Avenue to shelter in place. That is the area around the southeastern Loch of Pearl Harbor.
The lockdown also meant visitors were unable to go to two of the big tourist attractions at Pearl Harbor: the USS Missouri Memorial and the Arizona Memorial.
At Pearl Harbor National Memorial, people could only see the Arizona Memorial from across the water. Boats that would normally take visitors over to the solemn site instead sat idle for hours.
Florida visitor Bill McCown wanted to take his family to see this important part of American history, "I had visited here 15 years ago, and it is a very surreal surrounding. I wanted them to experience that."
Like other visitors, the McCowns will miss out on that experience during their trip to Hawaii.
"Unfortunately we leave tomorrow and it is back to Orlando. So we will have to make another trip out here to be able to do it," added McCown.
After four hours of lockdown, the all clear was given in the afternoon. Allowing life to return to normal on and around the base.
According to the military, the bomb threat at Pearl Harbor was resolved without any explosion or injuries.
Good call. Just about 80 years too late.
EVERY time there's a political lull or expose', someone does some weird shit apparently just to be a weird shitter.
The jerks who do things like that should spend a few years in prison to think about what they did.
I FULLY AGREE WITH THE BLM ERS AND ETC.
The CIA did it.
Funny it used to be that it took 200 Japanese airplanes to shut down Pearl Harbour. Now it just takes one idiot with a cell phone.
“Now it just takes one idiot with a cell phone.”
There’s an app for that, Android or iPhone we don’t know.
