WHO IS THE AVERAGE COSTCO CUSTOMER
Investopedia.com ^ | July 25, 2022 | Richard Best

Ask anyone who shops at Costco (COST) what they think of it and you'll probably hear exuberant praise, along with a list of the great deals they scored on their last visit. More than 111 million people pay an annual membership fee just to get in the door, with fewer than 10% each year who decide the experience isn’t worth the price of renewing. To some, shopping at Costco is close to a religious experience, which might explain why Sunday is its busiest day. For others, going to the warehouse is like going on a treasure hunt. They may be going to get cereal or pet food, but to get there they need to walk past aisles packed floor to ceiling with new inventories of cool stuff. But just who is the average Costco shopper? Keep reading to learn more.

This article is from a couple months ago but pertinent to upcoming events at Costco. Rumors indicate the membership fees may increase by double in the new year. It doesn’t seem to bother anyone because they know everyone they’re shopping with has an income. That said, there will be additional benefits for some with the increase. I can’t remember not being a member. I was introduced to it decades ago when membership was a perk of my husband’s employment package. I have never once been disappointed in Costco’s products or customer service. Imagine having pure revenues of 3+billion dollars annually willingly paid by people who want to spend and get a value in return. Very interesting article. Hope you agree.

For myself, the membership is worth the items I can’t get elsewhere. But if they double it? No, I’ll make do without.

I didn’t renew after seeing the employees become rude belligerent tyrants during the Covid mask hysteria.

I shop at Sams instead, as I don’t see the need to Virtue Signal.

My experience tells me that the average Costco customer is a large Asian family who like to all shop together and block the aisles as much as humanly possible.

I like Costco. In the summer, I make lots of Greek salads because it’s too hot to cook. I find the cost of the ingredients at Costco to be much less expensive and much fresher than at local grocery stores.

The only thing I don’t like about Costco, is that the nearest one to my home, is the highest volume Costco store in Canaduh, so it is ALWAYS extremely busy.

Costco customers spend more per year on grovery items than do bargain/sale conscious super market customers, and bargain/sale conscious super market pay no annual fee to the supermarkets they patronize, which are often more than one.

I have never found an electronics or appliance “bargain” at Costco that was not beat somewhere else.

Same here. It was hard going cold turkey from their protein bars, but there are more healthy ways to consume protein anyway.

Picanha at $5.99/lb and a vacuum wrapper alone make it worth it.

My wife and I are members at Sam’s. We like Sam’s better than Costco.

One of my coworkers only gets his gas at the Costco, which is about a 20 minute drive for him from his house. He tells me he has to wait in line usually around 30 minutes, to save the 10 cents/gallon.

I’ve tried to talk sense into him, but the dude is stubborn. He has a Kia Soul, which can only have a max 13 gallon tank (could be 9 possibly), so I say the most amount you can save is $1.30. For a 30 minute wait and 40 minute driving round trip!

First of all, he eats up all his savings just on the commute to the Costco and back. Second, doesn’t your time have any value to you? You’re so pathetic that you don’t mind spending an hour of your life, your free time from work, every week just to get gasoline?

And I’ve seen the fees to get a membership at Costco. I’d be surprised if you save enough on their products in total through the year to cover that fee. I’ve also seen how packed their parking lot is all the time, there’s no way the hassle and dealing with those packed aisles and waits at the checkout can be worth it, no freaking way!

Sams here in Indiana is typically a store in need of some serious janitorial service manned by black ghetto types. The one we used to go to closed up a couple years ago (no surprise on that).

Employees at Costco seem happy to be there. Tech at the tire store told me the money and benefits are good. In our area, there’s simply no comparison between the two brands.

We’re going to get BJs soon, will be interested to see where they line up.

Yeah as retirees we can hit Costco at 9am senior hour and breeze through, and the gas pumps are clear as rush hour is over. But I can see the challenge if you can’t.

Absolute worst place I’ve ever shopped. Wife sent me there on a weekend with a list recently, and I couldn’t find half the stuff or they were out, couldn’t find an acceptable English speaker to help me find stuff, zillions of other customers there, many of whom were rude and selfishly blocked aisles and intersections, and Costco accepts only Mastercard (not AmEx, not Visa, not Discovery). Guy at door checking merch asked how was my experience, and I said horrible, worst place I’ve ever been, ain’t never coming back. And he blamed me for the situation, asked well what did I expect and said I shouldn’t have come on the worst day of the week for them.

Sam’s Club is cleaner, more open, more attentive and more responsive to customers, and usually has what I want and I can find it or where it’s supposed to be without having to play MIME to a clueless non-English speaking worker when trying to get help.

Shoot, even Walmart is better, unless you need a huge box of 50 jumbo bags of multiple flavors of plant-based pork rinds at a “bulk bargain price.” Then go knock yourself out at ChumpCo.

Nowadays pretty much every fast food is 15+ per hour and a “help wanted” sign in front of every one of them.
So yeah.

Sam’s and Costco vs the average prices for staples at grocery stores is no comparison. The savings may not be as much as they were in the past, but compared to what’s available on the marketplace, particularly for perishables, they’re still attractive.
