This has got to be the stupidest thing I've heard yet out of our gubermint. First paragraph, last sentence:
"However, some seniors and others who typically do not file returns will need to submit a simple tax return to receive the stimulus payment."
SERIOUSLY??? We're all locking down, seniors are the most vulnerable, and the IRS is going to send them out to file a tax return they otherwise are not required to file??? What nimrod came up with that idea?
If you do not file for several year, they assume you are dead................
If seniors are collecting SS Checks, just add it to the next one
Done
What else do you think the IRS, sitting at home in Mordor, is going recommend?
Not so...If you don’t cash your check and/or your bank account closes...they look into it. My friend’s husband died and those checks stopped immediately.
How can you file on something you don’t file on?
So, you mean they’re sending out monthly SS checks to people they assume are dead?
IRS no.
SS yes.....................
It’s no dumber than New York State requiring me to file a tax return when I don’t pay any taxes on my pension or my social security. I don’t own any property, have no savings, stocks, bonds, etc. NADA! They owe me nothing, and I owe them nothing, year after year, yet I still have to send in a completed six-page form every year, and have had to do so since I retired in 2003. And back when that POS David Paterson was Governor of New York, he toyed with the idea of charging everyone $10 a pop to file their returns. I called his office and told him that if that came to be, then I wouldn’t be filing any State tax returns at all.
Why would they have to go out? You can file the ez form online for free.
My son in law flies under the radar.
Self employed. Legal cash businesses. He is 27 and has never filed a 1040.
My daughter - his wife - files married, filing separately.
I expect she will get the stimulus. Not sure about him.
BS Are you joking? Read “who is required to file”, on the IRS website.
Then how do these adult children keep getting checks for years and casing them long after mom is gone?.........There was a case here not long ago...................
They must be using the IRS database to send the checks out.
They occasionally miss. These darlings are thieves.
Well what else are they supposed to do? They need to know you exist to give you a payment at all. And since the payment is curved by income they need to know how much you make. And truthfully you don’t have to go out to do a return. There’s numerous websites, including the irs.gov.
IRS might not have a current address for the seniors. SSA would, but there would have to be coordination between SSA and IRS, programs would have to be written, etc.
If you are 65 or older, and your gross income is less than $13,850 then you don’t have to file.................
The IRS is not following the law - the law clearly states that the checks can be issued on social security information only.
I’ve been following it closely - This situation is evolving.
