I do taxes. My company says we're essential. While I'd love the business, this goes against everything the government is otherwise trying to accomplish with social distancing, etc.

What else do you think the IRS, sitting at home in Mordor, is going recommend?

How can you file on something you don’t file on?

It’s no dumber than New York State requiring me to file a tax return when I don’t pay any taxes on my pension or my social security. I don’t own any property, have no savings, stocks, bonds, etc. NADA! They owe me nothing, and I owe them nothing, year after year, yet I still have to send in a completed six-page form every year, and have had to do so since I retired in 2003. And back when that POS David Paterson was Governor of New York, he toyed with the idea of charging everyone $10 a pop to file their returns. I called his office and told him that if that came to be, then I wouldn’t be filing any State tax returns at all.

What nimrod came up with that idea?

Good question. Seniors are getting social security payments direct-deposited to their bank accounts every month - there's no reason the stimulus payments can't be direct-deposited to those same accounts.

Why would they have to go out? You can file the ez form online for free.

My son in law flies under the radar.

Self employed. Legal cash businesses. He is 27 and has never filed a 1040.

My daughter - his wife - files married, filing separately.

I expect she will get the stimulus. Not sure about him.

They must be using the IRS database to send the checks out.

Well what else are they supposed to do? They need to know you exist to give you a payment at all. And since the payment is curved by income they need to know how much you make. And truthfully you don’t have to go out to do a return. There’s numerous websites, including the irs.gov.

IRS might not have a current address for the seniors. SSA would, but there would have to be coordination between SSA and IRS, programs would have to be written, etc.

The IRS is not following the law - the law clearly states that the checks can be issued on social security information only.

I’ve been following it closely - This situation is evolving.

There are some seniors who do not receive SS and do not make enough to file a tax return so the IRS is totally correct.

I'm calling the IRS and having them send me an additional 30-40 checks with the name-space blank and I'll do my best to make sure they reach needy seniors...

OTOH, I'm surprised the IRS isn't doing the same thing all those hospitals are doing (no seniors over 65 get "ventillator" privileges if needed) and simply refuse to send all seniors a check.

Of course, fortunately, I'm no longer considered a "senior" citizen... At 86.5 I've been re-classified as "ancient" but "essential"... Snicker...

are seniors incapable of doing anything?...must they be spoon fed?....isn't it bad enough to protect them millions loose jobs and families struggle....

let the seniors do their taxes and maybe be thankful that my grandchildren will be paying forever so they can sit at home and complain....

enough of senior entitlement....the focus of our country from now on should be HOW DO WE HELP OUR YOUNG FAMILIES AND WORKERS.....

My company says we're essential.

Isn't that really what your post is about?

Letting us all know how important you are?

The oldster “tax return” has four questions, including your direct deposit information.

You fill it on the IRS website and “mail” it electronically.

You can request a “hard copy” of the return be sent to you by mail, and you can request that your check be sent by mail.

Get a grip. Download the form. Fill it out. Sign it. Put it in an envelope. Drop it in the mail. Or, better yet, file it electronically. How else do you think they’re going to be able to identify you to send you your check? Again, get a grip.
