WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A revelatory cache of fossils dug up in central Colorado details as never before the rise of mammals from the post-apocalyptic landscape after an asteroid smacked Earth 66 million years ago and annihilated three-quarters of all species including the dinosaurs.
The fossils, described by scientists on Thursday, date from the first million years after the calamity and show that the surviving terrestrial mammalian and plant lineages rebounded with aplomb. Mammals, after 150 million years of subservience, attained dominance. Plant life diversified impressively.
With dinosaurs no longer eating them, mammals made quick evolutionary strides, assuming new forms and lifestyles and taking over ecological niches vacated by extinct competitors. Within 700,000 years of the mass extinction, their body mass had become 100 times bigger than the mammals living immediately after the mass extinction.
Were it not for the asteroid, humans would never have evolved, said Ian Miller, curator of paleobotany and director of earth and space sciences at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. One message I would like people to take from this is that their earliest ancestors - and by ancestors were talking fuzzy little squirrel-like critters - had their origins in the wake of the extinction of the dinosaurs.
The thousands of well-preserved animal and plant fossils, unearthed just east of Colorado Springs, illuminate a time interval that had been shrouded in mystery.
Essentially, we were able to tease out details of the emergence of the modern world - the age of mammals - from the ashes of the age of the dinosaurs, Miller said.
Sixteen mammal species were discovered, with skulls and other bones fossilized after being buried in rivers and floodplains. Until now, only tiny mammal fossil fragments from that time had been discovered.

You and me baby ain’t nuthin’ but mammals........
So instead of us evolving from monkeys, now they say
we evolved from “fuzzy little squirrel-like critters”???
tease out
Right.
Apparently, these mammals eventually evolved to the point where they were able to contrive an entirely fictional theory to explain their own existence.
And we measure the temperatures over 200 years and make assessment of apocalyptic change.
In this story the mention millions of years.
Anyone see a disconnect here?
*ping*
Well, now you have to remember that the Book DID get every detail right about the sequence of events.
They were a bit off in the length of time though: Kind of hard to count billions of years when 70 x 70 is your largest number. Powers of ten are hard when there is no zero yet.
Asteroid?!
I thought it was ciggies....
If you think evolution is fictional, I suggest you talk to whomever is in charge of infection control at your local hospital. :-)
Pre-monkeys.
Thats a red herring. Bacteria and viruses arent evolving into a different kind of creature, now are they? Theyre merely reordering their existing genetic information in response to external stimuli, such as attacks by antibacterial or antiviral drugs. The information, or programming, is already existent inside the organism. They arent somehow developing new genetic information.
If evolution (to use the macro-evolution meaning of the word) is driven by survival advantages bestowed upon an organism by random mutations plus what evolutionists often refer to as the need for an organism to develop certain traits (as if matter somehow knows what it needs to do to survive), then I would expect there to be at least a few viruses or bacteria that would just grow arms and legs (because they need to) and walk into the research laboratories and pummel to death the researchers working on new antiviral and antibacterial strategies.
Im kidding to make a point, of course, but that scenario isnt much more absurd than what evolutionists actually believe.
“calamity and show that the surviving terrestrial mammalian and plant lineages rebounded with aplomb”
I just wanted to copy and paste all those big words.
Felt like . . . yeah . . .
That’s not what it is saying. During the Dinosaur era, mammals could not evolve larger because the dinosaurs were eating them. Only small rodent like creatures could survive the onslaught of the dinosaurs.
Once the dinosaurs were extinct thanks to that large asteroid, mammals began thriving, and gradually became larger and larger and apes became a reality.
Seems like ‘science’ lately is more about guesswork.
Guess how things occurred, and then find or fabricate the evidence and fill in the blanks.
Sort of like the way democrats do with impeachment.
As a mammal I DEMAND reparations from the specieist dinosaurs! I’ll take a billion on a cashier’s check.
Oh, the dinosaurs are extinct? Then we DEMAND reparations from Reptiles who are the greedy beneficiaries of the “dinosaur hegemony” over millions of years.
Dang I feel kinda...leftist.
So how did the asteroid know to only kill the dinosaurs but not the mammals.
Pretty fishy man...Oh wait...what about fish? How’d they survive?
There are two kinds of people; there are followers, who believe the stories they are told, and there are leaders, who see for themselves. I’m glad that the followers have religion to comfort them in their evolved state of submission, but I find it disconcerting that their religious leaders see and know the truth, and satiate their need for power by manipulating the faithful. It’s a sad state of affairs — I’m glad I’m on the outside looking in.
