A low-carb diet may have benefits for people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes even if they don't lose any weight, a new study suggests.
Researchers found that more than half of study participants no longer met the criteria for metabolic syndrome immediately following a four-week low-carb diet.
About a third of American adults have the syndrome, according to the American Heart Association.
After eating a low-carb diet, more than half the participants saw their metabolic syndrome reversed even though they were fed diets that intentionally contained enough calories to keep their weight stable.
After eating the low-carb diet, the participants had a variety of significantly improved health measures, particularly lower triglycerides and improved cholesterol readings. Despite the fact that the low-carb diet contained 2.5 times more saturated fat than the high-carb diet, it decreased saturated fat in the bloodstream and was associated with an increase in the size of cholesterol particles in the blood, which decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease, Hyde said.
The researchers also report evidence of increased fat-burning efficiency after a low-carb diet and an improvement in blood sugar. They did not see statistically significant improvements in blood pressure or insulin resistance.
Three participants no longer had metabolic syndrome after the moderate-carbohydrate diet and one no longer had the syndrome after the high-carb diet. Volek said that those results are likely explained by the fact that even these study dietsparticularly the moderate-carb dietrepresented a shift toward fewer carbs for study participants.
"Even a modest restriction is carbs is enough to reverse metabolic syndrome in some people, but others need to restrict even more," he said.

Nice. I can tell that you’re not advertising the product (the chamber) since I had to hold my computer sideways to watch the video! Your wife looks great, glad she’s doing well. The entire concept is simple makes sense, too much sense for the medical profession. If you have areas in your body that are damaged and not receiving ideal blood flow, then they’re not getting enough oxygen to heal themselves (diabetic ulcers come to mind, for example). So why not load up the person’s blood with oxygen so that the diminished flow still carries enough oxygen for healing?
“The majority of your calories should come from whole food carbs. The healthiest diet is low-fat, low protein, high carb and high starch.”
LOL, I looked outside and I’M CONVINCED that the Earth is FLAT, and no one is going to change that. Sorry, but spiking blood sugar levels is not very good for the human body, and neither is taking massive amounts of insulin to avoid those spikes.
Duh. The FDA guidelines for carb consumption are literally killing people!
The rediculous lie that saturated fats cause heart disease!
Large quantities of simple carbohydrates (sugars) cause heart disease.
Well, you are convinced that a low carb diet is healthy, so I wouldnt be surprised.
Not ridiculous. They do. They cause heart disease and cancer. Particularly fats from animal sources. I recommend you watch the film Forks Over Knives with Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn.
Large quantities of simple carbohydrates (sugars) cause heart disease.
Again this idea is debunked. For reference check out The Starch Solution by Dr John McDougall or Proteinaholic by Dr. Garth Davis.
I’m convinced by the people who post HERE, long time FReepers, who almost without exception* have had positive results by going low-carb, often very, very positive. So, point me to people HERE who have loaded up with starches (of any kind) and had similar results, I’d like to hear from them. So far no one has made that claim that I’m aware of.
*the one exception was a guy who didn’t get any better, no worse, but no better. He said he would check to see if something else was wrong with him.
I agree with all that. I just mean measuring muscle mass differences over four weeks.
Sorry, but bunk.
The human body is designed to be a hunter gatherer... high carbohydrates have had negative impact throughout human history.
Dont believe me? Go and read what archeologists know happened to humans when they started to settle and farm and began to shift from a high protein and fat diet to carbohydrate centric one.
Heres a hint.. health generally declined.
Too many simple carbs cause cardiovascular inflamation, that inflamation leads to plaque catching on the damaged arterial walls etc.. saturated fats do not cause heart disease. Inflamation does... and large amounts of carbs cause this.
At age 70, my girlfriend, who had been (breast) cancer free for 30 years, was diagnosed with Type II diabetes and she went on a low/no carb diet — and obviously no sugar. She lost about 30 pounds in four months, and her diabetes was gone.
Six months after that she was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer which had gone to her lungs, shoulder, and God-only-knows where else. It had been “brewing” during her extreme diet. She passed away a year later.
Everybody is different. To me, and other friends of hers who observed her during this time, even though the diet did fix the weight and diabetes, she was declining during the entire time. So much of it is a mystery, and (I believe) so much of it is tied to genetics and similar factors.
Keto plus Intermittent Fasting (16 hours fasting per day) is what I am doing, the weight is falling off, and I’m not even hungry.
Going low-care, in addition to whatever treatment the docs prescribe, can’t hurt.
Lol. Here?? I have to cite examples of people who post of FR to convince you?. On this thread I have cited books by actual medical doctors, by you want FReeper testimonials ?? I wouldnt trust posters to FR with health advice anymore than I would trust them for entertainment advice. Lol!! But OK. Here is one. Myself. I have been doing a low fat, whole food, plant-based diet , high in starch and whole carbs for a decade and it is literally the best thing Ive ever done for myself no exaggeration literally the best thing. It gives me plenty of energy to lift weights and build lots of muscle. Keeps the body fat low. And prevents heart disease. Keeps the cholesterol low with no meds. Ill let you know if I ever have to take a med. Hasnt happened yet. Dont want it to ever happen in the future.
OK. On this thread I have cited several books by actual medical doctors. I havent made them up. You can go on Google or Amazon and find them. Ive also cited documentaries that contain advice and testimony from actual medical doctors you can go ahead and watch them. You have cited what? Archaeologists ? Im going to need something a little better than that.
“Fiber Advance and Fiber Well Fit will do the job if taken after every meal.”
I take generic psyllium capsules after most meals, and have done so for about a year. I’ve lost weight, but don’t know how much, as I don’t “do” scales. Clothes I haven’t been able to get in to for 20 years now are extremely loose on me. Other than the psyllium, I’ve not changed anything else.
In 2014 I had cancer, and continue to be OK in that regard.
You’re welcome to believe the ‘professionals’ who told us that trans fats are MUCH BETTER for us than butter, and numerous other now-discredited crap.
I’ll believe people here who mostly have NO FINANCIAL INTEREST in whether anyone believes them or not, and spend 99% of their time talking politics, not this stuff. I just happen to think higher of FReepers, I guess.
As to your case, based on what you said about yourself, you appear to be part of the 67% percent of the country who are NOT prone to Diabetes, which is great, and from my quick look at your diet, it seems to keep you clear of today’s hybridized strains of wheat, which is what is causing much, if not most, of the spike in obesity and Diabetes, so I’m not doubting that it works for you, but I’ll continue to also believe the FReepers here who literally have NO NEED to lie about their conditions.
Just curious. ...are you a MD?
The doctors whose books I cited, all have a much greater financial interest in performing open-heart surgeries and gastric bypass surgeries, and in prescribing medications, then they do in writing books advocating a whole food, plant-based diet that actually prevents the diseases that they make their money treating. Thats why I trust them. And all the books I cited are very thorough, and well researched. Besides, financial interest or not, Im not going to just trust my health to the random opinions of random internet posters. Especially here on FR, where, lets be honest with ourselves, most peoples opinion on a healthy diet is motivated by their world view. I have been on here long enough to know this.
Not at all, but all the nutritional advice that I follow can be backed up with books and articles written by medical doctors. I dont trust fads.
Everyone is different...is my motto. I think the majority of people do better on lower carb diet. (Me, my family included) Altho I’m beginning to think fasting is something that can affect some more than “what” is eaten.
