Ask medieval historian Michael McCormick what year was the worst to be alive, and he's got an answer: "536." Not 1349, when the Black Death wiped out half of Europe. Not 1918, when the flu killed 50 million to 100 million people, mostly young adults. But 536. In Europe, "It was the beginning of one of the worst periods to be alive, if not the worst year," says McCormick, a historian and archaeologist who chairs the Harvard University Initiative for the Science of the Human Past.

I can live without flush toilets. Painless dentistry is another question.

I wish there were more pictures. Can you imagine how great it would be to go back in time with a camera?

Dentistry is more painful; use of toilets more constant. I do like having both, plus a lot of other things. :)

Thanks TXnMA. I'm also impressed by the level of interest in this topic right now, and over the years the FReeper interest in that particularly calendar year.

Not a greenhouse cloud that captured reflective radiationbut an aerosol veil that prevented sunlight from penetrating
This will require some thought but at the outset it seems like causitive attribution to suit the hypothesis

The mid east is strewn with former towns and villeages destroyed by earthquakes and never occupied again.
In the American west there are a number of ghost towns that lived and died.
In the annals of history, Paradise is just another dead town
