President Proclaims Patriot Day

Three years ago, our country was ruthlessly attacked, and more than 3,000 innocent people lost their lives. We will always remember the victims: sons and daughters, husbands and wives, dads and moms, family members, co-workers, and friends. And we will always be inspired by the heroism and decency of our fellow citizens on that day. Police, firefighters, emergency rescue personnel, doctors, nurses, and many others risked their own lives to save the lives of their fellow citizens. They demonstrated the great character and bravery of our Nation, and they embody the great spirit of America.

Since September 11th, America has fought a relentless war on terror around the world. We are staying on the offensive in this war -- striking the terrorists abroad so we do not have to face them here at home. We pray that God watch over our brave men and women in uniform and all who are waging this war and working to keep America safe. And we pray for their families. In the face of danger, America is showing its character. Three years after the attack on our country, Americans remain strong and resolute, patient in a just cause, and confident of the victory to come.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2004, as Patriot Day. I call upon the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half-staff on Patriot Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe Patriot Day with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services, to display the flag at half-staff from their homes on that day, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. eastern daylight time to honor the innocent victims who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this tenth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twenty-ninth.

GEORGE W. BUSH

I know that I should have been doing something about 9/11 but I can't do serious stuff. I had some typos and need to mention more people and things so here is a later revision:

Listen my children to what’s being said,
about post 47 on Howlin’s thread.
Where Buckhead had noticed and Buckhead alone,
strange things in the memos 60 Minutes had shown.

The font and the spacing you just couldn’t do,
on any typewriter in ‘72.
The centering, apostrophes and superscripts too,
were also some things that you just couldn’t do.

As they and other freepers on freerepublic.com,
discussed the consequences of this bomb.
In the midst of this posting, it was too long,
til tankerkc found the format was wrong.

The memos are real, CBS still insist,
their expert had checked them and nothing he missed.
On their authenticity, his reputation he’ll stake,
but a dozen other experts think the memos are fake.

It could have been done if he changed the ball,
to make the superscript high and small.
In the midst of a memo, now who would do that,
me thinks their arguments are somewhat flat.

The more they argue, the clearer it gets,
they were trying to counter, the swift boat vets.
With news like this it’s certainly a given,
CBS needs to register as a 527.

The Bad Samaritan

Read: Matthew 23:1-15

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe . . . and have neglected . . . justice and mercy and faith. —Matthew 23:23

Bible In One Year: Proverbs 13-15; 2 Corinthians 5

A good-Samaritan-turned-bad saved a woman's life and then stole her purse. Police in Los Angeles said that a passerby had noticed a distressed woman getting ready to jump off a bridge. The man struggled with the woman until she broke free and then fell back onto the concrete and was knocked unconscious. That's when the surprise came. According to witnesses, the suspect then grabbed the woman's purse and ran off.

That man's outrageous behavior illustrates the pattern of the Pharisees. They too seemed ready to go to the rescue of others (Matthew 23:15). They were advertised as men of prayer, men of the Scriptures, champions of the faith, and helpers of the needy. But the intentions of their hearts revealed that they were actually thieves and exploiters of people.

None of us is above such behavior. We too can reach out to others with an honest desire to help them, yet underneath we may become more interested and concerned about our own welfare than about theirs.

Lord, we don't want to be like that. We long to be as real and loving as Your Son. Help us not to succumb to selfishness. As we express Your love to others, don't let our motives turn into a desire for self-advantage. —Mart De Haan

There is a power of selfishness,
The proud and willful I,
And if my life would helpful be,
That proud old self must die. —Anon.

A good motive turns bad on the hinge of selfishness.

Graphic by Billie

Hurricane Sky

Cloud bellies, looking muscular,
Big knots of corded strength,
Like rippled abs up in the sky,
I studied them at length.

A hurricane sky came strolling,
Along my stretch of beach,
A muscled bit of cumulus,
Just slightly out of reach.

I stared into the cauldron,
The writhing mass at play.
It roiled and folded constantly.
Things could go wrong this day.

The surf was pounding out the steps,
As clouds walked over land.
Somehow I knew that they were not,
Here to just pound sand.

The portents of a message,
Were all quite abundantly clear,
When Mother Nature speaks her piece,
It’s wise to lend an ear.

Thanks but I'm not too sure about the craftsmanship being good since I just found another error in the third verse.
I have problems with anything that the spell checker won't catch.

One of the rules I live by is to avoid pointing out errors or blemishes in my work.

If they get noticed, I will thank the person for pointing them out, and work to correct the flaw. And of course I try to correct any flaws before it is subject to public view.

The point is, if you do not point them out, most people never see them.

I am trying to control my urge to go find the error you mention, but I didn't see it, or filtered it out before; why should I look for it now?

I liked your work, and I hope to see more of it.

Escellent selection on the graphic, it sets the mood for the poem well.

Rush was pointing out the helplessness we all feel when Mother gets her back up, and how foolish it is for us to be blaming ourselves for things that are not under our control.

Though I was thinking about what it might take to be able to "steer" a hurricane, and who would get the blame if the process went awry -- good story potential there.

Keyes2000mt, thank you for your wonderful 9-11-2001 poem. I'm sorry I was not here to say hi and thank you yesterday.

We will not forget. We will remember those lost that day and the ones lost while defending freedom.

Have a beautiful day.
