Obama amputates our nuclear arms

By: Charles Krauthammer

...snippet...

Under President Obama’s new policy, however, if the state that has just attacked us with biological or chemical weapons is “in compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty,” explained Gates, then “the U.S. pledges not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against it.”

Imagine the scenario: Hundreds of thousands are lying dead in the streets of Boston after a massive anthrax or nerve gas attack. The president immediately calls in the lawyers to determine whether the attacking state is in compliance with the NPT. If it turns out that the attacker is up-to-date with its latest IAEA inspections, well, it gets immunity from nuclear retaliation. (Our response is then restricted to bullets, bombs and other conventional munitions.)

However, if the lawyers tell the president that the attacking state is NPT noncompliant, we are free to blow the bastards to nuclear kingdom come.

This is quite insane. It’s like saying that if a terrorist deliberately uses his car to mow down a hundred people waiting at a bus stop, the decision as to whether he gets hanged or 100 hours of community service hinges entirely on whether his car had passed emissions inspections.

Apart from being morally bizarre, the Obama policy is strategically loopy. Does anyone believe that North Korea or Iran will be more persuaded to abjure nuclear weapons because they could then carry out a biological or chemical attack on the United States without fear of nuclear retaliation?

The naivete is stunning.

A BRITISH chemicals firm is involved in a secret MI5 inquiry into the illegal export to Iran of material that could make a radioactive “dirty bomb”.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) raided the Essex home of the firm’s former sales manager after a tip that potentially lethal chemicals, including cobalt, were sold to Iran last summer.

Lubbock contract employee in courtroom after making bomb threats

By Ann Wyatt Little - bio | email

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A federal magistrate decided Friday that the man accused of making threats to put a bomb at the Lubbock Airport is a flight risk, and will stay behind bars through the weekend. Bone has not been set for 20-year-old Johnathan Ivins.

Ivins made his first appearance before a judge Friday morning. When asked by KCBD NewsChannel 11, as he was walking into the courtroom, if he even jokingly made threats to blow up a plane, he said yes.

SNIPPED...

Forensic investigators searched Ivin’s computer and according to the indictment prosecutors allege he visited “questionable, disturbing and bizarre sites,” including terrorist Web sites. The motion goes on to read that Ivins admitted to investigators about researching different types of bombs and how to make a timer using an alarm clock.

SNIPPED...

This is the post word for word included in the indictment:

“I’m building a bomb as you speak. I work at the airport as a Technician. I go inspect planes and get paid $20 an Hour. You think you won. Well I got plans for implanting a 10 hour bomb in one of the vents. Hahahahaha when that plane goes boom you’ll know what I’m talking about. I don’t care if I get caught. They call me the hero. Your asses is going down I’m just waiting for the right time. I’m also implanting an another bomb somewhere in a big city. Plus there’s muslim country’s who want to destroy the American satellites. I look too much of american but I have a quarter of a muslim in me plus 1/16 of a jew in me so. Don’t worry you’ll go your turn f...... Yankee doodle dandy.”

Ivins is charged with one count of imparting and conveying false information regarding the destruction of an aircraft, one count of making a bomb threat and one count of false information and hoaxes. If tried and convicted, Ivins could face up to 15 years in prison.

Crash investigators search for clues in Libya

By TAREK EL-TABLAWY (AP) – 5 hours ago

TRIPOLI, Libya — Dutch and American crash investigators helped search for clues Sunday in the debris field of the airliner that slammed into the desert short of an airport runway in Libya’s capital last week.

Libyan authorities, meanwhile, determined that one of those found dead among the shattered wreckage was not a passenger but a Libyan airport worker who responded to the scene and died of a heart attack. The new information, however, did not alter the official casualty count from Wednesday’s crash.

SNIPPED...

He said there was no explosion until the plane hit the ground. Libya has ruled out terrorism as a possible cause of the crash, although the investigation is still under way.

Al-Qaeda number two plotting World Cup terrorist attack
The Telegraph ^ | 5/17/2010 | Richard Spencer
Posted on May 18, 2010 1:15:26 AM PDT by bruinbirdman

Osama bin Laden’s closest al-Qaeda lieutenant has been plotting a terrorist attack on the World Cup, Iraqi police said.

According to investigators, Ayman al-Zawahiri, bin Laden’s number two, was conspiring with an al-Qaeda operative who was arrested in Baghdad two weeks ago.

The operative, named as Abdullah Azzam Saleh Misfar al-Qahtani and said to be a former Saudi army colonel who had travelled to Iraq and become security chief for al-Qaeda’s local branch, has been accused of organising suicide bombings in two cities south of Baghdad.

Abdullah Azam al-Qahtani

Major General Qassim Atta, head of security in Baghdad, said he was also believed to have made contact with al-Zawahiri, the man generally regarded as al-Qaeda’s second-highest leader after bin Laden.

“He participated in the planning of a terrorist act in South Africa during the World Cup,” Maj Gen Atta said. “He was in contact with the terrorist Ayman al-Zawahiri to organise the plan hatched by al-Qaeda.”

Maj Gen Atta gave no details of what the plot was or how far it had been developed. But last month a jihadist website published a statement in which al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, the North African branch, suggested an attack might be made on England’s opening game, against the United States.

The bulk of South Africa’s police work in advance of the World Cup, starting next month, has been aimed at controlling high rates of violent crime.

Precautions have been laid against terrorist attacks, but police said they were still investigating the latest claims.

“The South African police are still working on getting confirmation,” Nonkululeko Mbatha, a spokeswoman, said.

One in custody after hotel fire

One man is in custody after confessing to setting the fire that destroyed a Southeast Austin hotel.

Officials say Mohamed Amine Lahlou, 33, confessed Sunday night to setting the fire.

He called 911 around 6 p.m. and described details of the fire that investigators say no one would have known unless they were there.

“When questioned, all the details that he gave us match up with all the witness information that we have. It matches up with the fire patterns that we have in the building and we’re confident based on that confession that he is the person (who) did start that fire,” Capt. Andy Reardon of AFD said.

He told detectives he set sheets on fire in between the two beds in his room. That fire spread quickly through America’s Best Value Inn on South Interstate 35 near Oltorf. The flames trapped several guests in their hotel rooms.

“I opened the door and the smoke was black that’s when I knew I needed to bust out the windows and hang out,” said Laureen Wright, trapped guest.

Firefighters used ladder trucks to reach up to the third floor so that they could rescue guests, including Wright, through the windows.

“She could feel the heat from the door and there was smoke coming behind her but no flames. She was distraught obviously and wanted out of the window. My goal was keeping her from jumping out the window until we got a ladder to her,” said Alex Vanegas, AFD.

They say it was dangerous but the only way to get inside.

“The hallway itself was already on fire. There (were) already flames in the hallway...they have no way to protect themselves. They have one way in and one way out and that’s what makes it so dangerous,” said Vanegas.

Firefighters say no one was seriously injured. EMS transported one person to the hospital.

Investigators say the hotel is destroyed. Damages were estimated around $1.5 million.

Homeland Security Alert: Terror suspect may be headed to Texas through Mexico
KVUE.com ^ | May 18, 2010, 7:40 am | by Shern-Min Chow/11 News
Posted on May 18, 2010 4:34:31 PM PDT by Cindy

SNIPPET: “HOUSTON — A Homeland Security Alert is asking Houston police and Harris County Sheriff’s deputies to keep their eyes open for a potential terrorist.

The alert focuses on Mohamed Ali, a suspected member of the terrorist group Al Shabaab. It indicates he may be traveling to the U.S. through Mexico.”

SNIPPET: “In 2007, former Houstonian Daniel Joseph Maldonado was brought back to Houston by the U.S Attorney in the Southern District after he was captured in Somalia reportedly training with terrorist groups.

“He had initially been on the frontlines of Al Shabaab, but when they realized he was an American, they pulled him back because they had plans for him to come back to the U.S. and recruit female suicide bombers,” said Neuhaus Schaan.”

SNIPPET: “U.S. Homeland Security officials confirmed the Muhamed Ali alert, but declined to comment on it.”

SNIPPET: “If authorities are right, Mohamed Ali is hardly alone and a terror network is following well-worn human smuggling routes into the Lone Star State.

“There would be a reasonable chance to have him [Mohamed Ali] coming through Houston,” Neuhaus Schaan said. “They [Al Shabaab] have been pretty busy in Texas.”

Officials say Mohamed Amine Lahlou, 33, confessed Sunday night to setting the fire.<<<

One of the jihadi videos, recently had a statement that made me think of the jihadi fires.

I don’t remember which one, just that I stopped for a minute and recalled past fires they set in the U.S.

Firemen and Police never get the credit they are due for the work they do each day.
