on another note: what happens if you substitute ammonium nitrate for potassium nitrate in the conventional mix for black powdersolid rocket fuel?

Well.. the propellant pellets from the powder bags my howitzer used were ammonium nitrate based.
Big yellow flame, and lots of odd smelling smoke that was strangely addictive.
Not sure what it would do in a rifle, shotgun, or pistol.
But in the howitzer, it burned really hot, and needed a primer stick that was five inches long.
(Cased ammo for 105mm howitzer. Brass casing and separate shell as opposed to the 155mm which uses bags hand loaded into the tube behind the round.)
