Granted, he was by no means a democrat, but some of the main facets of his program, e.g. aggressive Westernization, banning the Fez-among other seemingly anachronistic modes of dress-fully integrating women into society, should be implemented in the rest of the Islamic world.

Perhaps we wouldn't be dealing with as many problems today if more people had emulated his model.

No, I don't think I've read "The Burning Tigris." I think I had it on the library list at some point, but sometimes I lose the list and have to start over :-).

I agree that Ataturk's secularization program was the right way to go. I've had positive relationships with a number of Moslems - Persians, Pakistanis, Turks - in various situations. However, I'm reluctantly coming to the conclusion that Islam is categorically flawed, and simply must be abandoned if there are going to be functioning, modern societies.

Have any of you tried to read to Koran (Q'uran)?

It is contradictory from verse to verse. The only way a person can "accept" it is to read it and rock, memorize it and quote it by rote. Islam is NOT "religion of peace" because it contradicts itself page after page.

The Imams get followers because they select only verses that say to kill the Infidel (anyone who is non-Muslim) and they select kids because they know children are most impressionable.

Like the Hitler Youth.

Don't underestimate these people, and never believe a "Believer" is interested in your well-being. Unless they speak flawless English and have given up the dress of the Muslim faith, they are Muslim, and their sympathies are not with you.

There are exceptions to every rule, but these days, it is hard to find a truly "Westernized" Muslim.

the "contradictions" are explained by the doctrine of superior replacement: Allah can change his mind, don't'cha see, and give a new "revelation" which completely contradicts an earlier one. In all such cases, the newer "revelation" is considered supreme.
