The Garden Thread - June, 2025
June 1, 2025 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 06/01/2025 5:48:14 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

Thanks - your recipe is very, very close to my recipe - exact same ingredients except for cayenne .... I added Tabasco or Sriracha. I put paprika in a salt shaker to sprinkle on the top. I also get ‘fancy’ & use a pastry bag/tip for piping because I’m not good at filling with a spoon :-)

The guys in our family scarf up the deviled eggs in no time. When the Pastor was announcing the picnic/party on the 29th & the sign up sheet, she commented “and I like deviled eggs .... just saying!” Deviled eggs are certainly popular with most people.

Thanks again!

You sound like a Man With a Plan. I like that! My Colonel used to tell us, ‘Plan the Work, then Work the Plan.’ Works every time it’s tried!

However, he’d also call me to ask if, ‘piss-poor’ was hyphenated when he was doing my Annual Review. *SMIRK*

The summer I was his driver, I thought I would crack a rib laughing so much. But - when he’s ‘on duty’ there was NO messin’ around. I would’ve followed that man into h#ll if required. Leadership! I miss that man! :)

OK - back to making Garden-related plans... :)

Walker Dogs are known for their noses, for sure!

We currently have 'Osage' who can track a bear on a cold trail 10 hours old. Then there's 'Taylor' who had the last batch of pups and can pretty much do the same. And if you're a Black Bear, you WILL be climbing up the nearest tree when Taylor is around!

(That probably applies to #1 Marine Daughter, too!)

"A possum was in the trap this morning. I had to jiggle the trap to wake it up from sleeping off the feast of cabbage, apples, & watermelon rinds I used for bait. It would not leave so I just left the trap door open."

Um...I wouldn't leave, either! I'd be waiting on dessert, LOL!

You are the Baked Bean QUEEN!

Oh, that is SO CUTE when you do up Deviled Eggs like critters!

My Deviled Egg recipe is similar to yours, Pollard, but I always have home-canned Pickle Relish on hand to mix in, and that is a MUST for us.

I like Smoked Paprika on top, or Chipotle.

It amazes me how many variations you can come up with for a simple Deviled Egg:

NP, recipe courtesy of the Marlboro Cookbook. The wife of a buddy of mine gave it to me years ago. Lots of flavorful and rustic recipes a la Marlboro man on the trail as pictured in ads back then. Flavorful because smokers’ taste buds are on the weak side.

Recipe calls for a ziploc bag with corner cut off in place of a pastry or cake decorating bag. Doesn’t give that fancy star shape but beats a spoon for neatness.

I saw a ‘Chef John’ mention in the link you posted. I LOVE his green beans so I had to check out the deviled egg recipe:

https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/220250/chef-johns-deviled-eggs/

His different ingredient is cream cheese. I will try his recipe some time, but not for the 29th. I think cream cheese would give the filling more ‘structure’ ... I don’t make ‘soupy’ filling & don’t like eating other people’s eggs if the filling is super soft. I use a decorative tip when filling the eggs & the filling is ‘stiff’ enough to hold the design.

I saw a bunch of recipes on the link I would like to try.

I used the zip lock bag method before going to the pastry bag/tip.

One of my dearest friends (now deceased) I used to hike with peppered his food heavily & to the extent that sitting across from him at a meal, it would get me to sneezing. He was a HEAVY smoker, especially when in the Navy. After he got out, he was overweight, in poor shape, feeling so awful it scared him. With 20-20 hindsight, he probably had a heart attack & in his 60’s, some test indicated he’d had a mild one years before. He quit smoking, started walking everywhere, lost weight to the point he was almost skinny & began hiking/backpacking every weekend. Over a couple of years, I figure I hiked about 1,500 miles with him. He died on a trail (long story).

You are the Baked Bean QUEEN!

*******

“Queenie” here is so serious about those baked beans that I bought a new 9x13 pan, just for that recipe.

It’s a “Pyrex Deep” ... 3” sides instead of 2”. The beans tend to overrun the 2” depth when being transported. This pan also comes with a top which is great ... I can never get the foil tight enough to prevent leakage. Walmart had the best price, $16 something & it was in stock at the store. Amazon wa $22 - $26.

“I saw a bunch of recipes on the link I would like to try.”

Me, too! I have a glut of eggs on hand, so I am going to make up a bunch of hard-boiled eggs this week. Some will be chopped for Chef Salad and some will become Deviled. :)

I love Pyrex. I have a few ‘vintage’ pieces of theirs that have glass lids. They were my Grandma’s; I love them so much! :)

Thanks for the recipe source info. There are 2 “Marlboro Country” cookbooks on Amazon ... ‘used’ prices are reasonable. The books get good reviews .... I’m tempted!

Our new house is great for company, old house was not. Mom is making up for lost years & inviting family & friends. The way it’s going, I might have to add “Bed & Breskfast” to what we’ve named the place. Since I have to do all the cooking, I am in constant search for great recipes.

Daniel. I do not recall if you already do this, but when you plant, consider not planting them vertically, dig in your fertilizer, consider making a bit of a trench, and lay them down at a 45 degree angle. It sounds like you will have a lot of stem. The stem will produce additional roots over a larger area for a more vigorous plant.

Thanks, and I have heard of that and may try it, but I actually usually dig a rather deep hole and plant then up to the first leaves, and even strong winds did not break any.

The reason they look like they have a lot of stem is because I picked off lower leaves, many of which looked diseased after the deluge. The plants furthest away from the building and the new roof are overall doing better.

Thanks for the links, though the last one was missing the url. Not planted deep enough:)

Another option after hardening them off some is to put floating row covers over them or the tomato cages. I clothes pin them on to keep them there.

Thanks. Waiting for sun. 10-Day Forecast says partly or mostly cloudy, and or rain.

I have some organic tomato powder I like to use on deviled eggs.

I use a quart ziploc, put in the yolks mayo etc. seal it, squeeze it to mix, cut the tip off the bottom and use it as a piping bag. No dish to wash and toss the bag.

Ours is showing some sun towards the end of the week and partly cloudy early next week, but this is just dreary NY style Lake effect weather.

I understand if you have a heavy duty freezer bag and are careful bout the size of the corner you could put a metal piping tip in it and it would work almost as well as a real bag.

Food hack piping bag

One of the posters said that you should put tape around the tip in the corner or the tip will pop through.

Daniel; Thanks for posting that Epic Gardening link!

Learning never stops but I think you have already learned most of what you need to know to grow tomatoes.
