The Garden Thread - June, 2025
June 1, 2025 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 06/01/2025 5:48:14 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

Everything went better than planned! They were all happy to get out and run around, and after I cleaned their kennels and refreshed their water buckets they were VERY happy to ‘kennel up!’ for their supper.

No one caused any problems - even Taylor, who I thought would be her usual b*tchy self, LOL! Having that last batch of puppies must’ve mellowed her out some. ;)

However, Emma Jolene (who is Beau’s only remaining Raccoon Dog and has her own Doggy Condo outside) has been complaining LONG and LOUDLY that Beau left her behind, yesterday. I’m resisting the temptation to tell her to ENJOY the time that Daddy’s gone off hunting - TIME is ALL OUR OWN around here for the next week. ;)

I’ve been giving ‘Jennifer Cooniston’ special treats of dog biscuits and apples, so she knows that ‘Mom’ is taking care of her this week. ;)

Since it’s Saturday Night that means a Dirty Martini, Laundry and a re-vamp of my To-Do List for tomorrow. Life Is Good! :)

Time it right and one can be raising some pretty good plants during the last months of winter and have very large tomato plants ready to put into the ground when it warms, I think it is best to time it to where the plant is not producing a tomato yet when it is put into the ground though, which they will do if the planting is delayed.

Indoor plants need to be hardened a little before put into the ground also, so that they can build up a little resistance to the direct sun and to wind, being sent straight to a full day of sun can sunburn them.

Daniel. I do not recall if you already do this, but when you plant, consider not planting them vertically, dig in your fertilizer, consider making a bit of a trench, and lay them down at a 45 degree angle. It sounds like you will have a lot of stem. The stem will produce additional roots over a larger area for a more vigorous plant. Here is some more info on this.

He says that you can there is no one Right method, but his "Trench" method produces more roots. Doing this 45 degrees is a modified Trench method that can produce good results.

Thanks to God that your Daughter and her unborn child survived her accident! I am glad for you and her and her husband!

My experience with driving in the Mountains was on poorly maintained 2 lane roads in the Mark Twain Forest in the Ozarks. I hate roads perched on mountainsides, I hated driving on them, I hate looking out over tree tops were there are no railings or shoulders. I like wide paved highways over flat landscapes.

Interesting article regarding Nematodes. (I do not think these are root knot nematodes.)

Nematode...living contructions

You can use nematodes to kill fungus gnats and soil grubs like japanese beetles, so this is interesting.

It’s my understanding that even tomatoes don’t necessarily like full direct sun.

Another option after hardening them off some is to put floating row covers over them or the tomato cages. I clothes pin them on to keep them there.

It works well for peas and lettuce, too, when we get a ridiculous hot spell.

The garden is in but things are very slow this year. Here in the first week of June we are in the low to mid 40’s in the morning and barely reach 60 by afternoon. Cabbage and broccoli are about he only things that are thriving. Moose have been visiting the yard.

The cloud cover finally gave some rain this week but we are still a bit on the dry side. Low temps, dark cloudy days, and dry. I hope this isn’t the dreaded 50 degree summer. One of the great things about the interior is that summer is usually glorious. Oh well, at least we are not on fire!

Gonna have to start burning car tires and driving the diesel eveywhere so we can get some of that global warming I keep hearing about!

I have always found that the best tactic with early starting is to get the plants into bigger dirt (pots) as soon as possible.

I’m waiting on rain today, too. Very hazy here again today from the Canadian wildfires.

Funny, none of the EnviroWeenies seem to be concerned about how Canada is destroying the Earth. Wonder why that is? ;)

Howard loves Milk Bones. I bought a sack of jerky treats for him when I picked him up from his snip-snip appointment. He could smell them in my pocket before I unsealed the package. lol

That 5”+ was early in the week. We’ve gotten another 3/4” since then. You can hear the water seeping through the ground.

It’s a mess.

Thinking ahead to FALL gardens already!

Pinetree Seeds is having a 30% OFF Sale! Their prices are good, and they don’t give you a ton of seed you’ll never end up using in the average size garden.

Absolutely!

She’s doing ok physically but now she’s going through replaying it in her head. She feels guilty that she wrecked their car that they use for camping and their outdoor sports. They had souped it up a lot.

Now they have to spend money on a new vehicle. Life is like that though. Full of unexpected events. They could’ve had hospital bills on top of the cost of replacing the car. Someone else could’ve been injured.

She’s so grateful and thankful, but she still feels guilty. We’ve told her that’s understandable but not justified. And she knows that. There’s just always that twinge of “could I have done something differently?”. It will take time.

Tomorrow they have to go to the towing yard to see if there are any contents that they can retrieve. There was a camping stove and a sink, and tools in there. It was like a mini camper inside their Rover.

We all know it was a miracle, too, and like when Trump dodged that bullet, that miraculous hand of God, well, it’s just making her evaluate and reevaluate.

It is times like this that I wish we weren’t so far apart physically, but it is what each has chosen.

Pretty awesome to be the recipient of a miracle though. Undeserved, but so appreciated!

Nice day here in Ctrl MO today. I start doing the Fri-Mon weekend shift this week so I work tomorrow and then get Tues/Wed/Thurs off. Tues/Wed nice, then Thurs starts back with the chance of rain every day through Saturday, so far.

Watered under the high tunnel/roof today. This will be the 2nd time this year which is crazy being under a roof but with so much rain, it’s crept in sideways under it and was even downright mucky a couple of times.

Time for some tomato plant support too. Gonna try the Florida Weave. Everything’s determinate slicers this year so they won’t get tall enough to bother with lean and lower like the crazy cherry maters I’d been growing. Then again, I think I have a piece of cattle panel long enough to lash them all to. Either way, two t-posts and whatever for the 12 foot row.

Put an alternator in the little car last weekend and noticed my A-frame was rusted through. Clamped some steel on it to get by and the new one will be here tomorrow and will be installed Tues. It needs a tune up and a few other little things soon too.

Next up is a new waterpump for the truck so it’s drive-able again. Took almost two gallons of water to get home one day and I could wobble the fan a bit so it’s sat since then. Brand new Melling(good ole brand), Made in the USA for $140 ain’t bad. Melling was known for making about the best oil pumps back in the day. I think they made a lot for the OEM market.

Both vehicles need registrations renewed which means inspections, pay personal property tax, renew insurance and then registrations. At least I have some weekdays off now for that sort of thing. My 60 day review is a week away so I should get a little raise and I get a 20% shift differential for the 20 hours for Sat/Sun. Ought to help a little.

Few more paychecks and I might be able to get some stuff for me and the high tunnel.

There’s a couple of 12 foot step ladders on CL right now, $75/$100, so I might try to squeeze one in the budget next week. Need one to work on the peaks of the tunnel ends and you don’t see them up for sale often. Always plenty of 6 and 8 footers but not 12s and both are in good shape, fiberglass, and $100 or less is a really good deal.

We are under a tornado watch AGAIN (along with 2/3 of the state) until 10 pm. Looking at what’s headed this way on radar, I think & pray we’re OK. There is a tornado warning but it’s way away in an eastern county & we are a far western county.

I dumped an inch of rain out of the gauge this morning, half an inch yesterday. Raining hard when we went to church - flood warnings were out & attendance down.

A possum was in the trap this morning. I had to jiggle the trap to wake it up from sleeping off the feast of cabbage, apples, & watermelon rinds I used for bait. It would not leave so I just left the trap door open.

We are having a big picnic/party at church the 29th. I signed up last week for baked beans - everyone loved them when I took them to a previous dinner. Today, I also signed up for deviled eggs. We have 2 carriers, hold 20 each. I hope I can find my recipe - had it on a card taped to the inside of a cabinet door & not sure I brought it when we moved..

Since I have the two deviled egg carriers, I thought I would decorate one of them with eggs that look like animals - the kids will love it & I can think of a few adults who will be amused at a minimum. :-)

Deviled Eggs recipe we use

12 Large Eggs
1/2 c Mayonnaise (we use salad dressing aka Miracle Whip)
2 tsp Dijon Mustard
2 tsp sweet pickle juice (we skip because we tend to not have bread & butter, gerkin etc)
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp paprika (for sprinkle at end)
Dash to 1/2 tsp cayenne or curry powder, optional (we use cayenne and prob more than 1/2 tsp)

Now that I look at it, I think we use the 1/2 tsp cayenne and also replace the paprika sprinkle with cayenne. Good stuff, always raved about.
