MicroRNA Pioneers Win Nobel Prize in Medicine

he Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for the discovery of microRNA, tiny molecules that help control how genes are expressed.

Their findings unlocked new areas of research into the roles these molecules play in human health. Researchers are exploring microRNA treatments for cancer, hepatitis and heart disease. Ambros and Ruvkun were postdoctoral fellows in the 1980s in the laboratory of biologist Robert Horvitz, who won the Nobel Prize in 2002 for his research in gene regulation. In Horvitz’s lab, they studied the roundworm C. elegans to better understand the role genes play in the development of different cell types.

Researchers already knew genes are copied to make molecules called mRNA that are translated into proteins that help determine cell type. The discovery of microRNA added new understanAmbros, with the help of research assistant Rosalind Lee—who also happens to be his wife—and geneticist Rhonda Feinbaum, discovered the first microRNA in 1993. People wishing for mRNA medicine to go away are going to have to try another tactic.

mRNa is Messenger RNA, not MicroRNA.

Whoops, missed that.

If I understand it correctly, this is miRNA (micro RNA), not mRNA (no letter "i" means messenger RNA) like the left has told us saves us from our covid sins.

To verify it, I see it other places like https://www.jpost.com/international/article-823566 are saying not to associate it with the clot shot mRNA "vaccines":

Professor Gunilla Karlsson Hedestam of the Karolinska Institute said that, while the 2023 prize was linked to the specific use in COVID-19 vaccines, this year's award (2024) was for a leap in basic understanding with many potential future applications.

We were assured for decades that it was junk DNA.

Evolutionary insulation.

But it’s not.

People interested in this can look at the ENCODE project.

microRNA are very short snips of RNA that do not code for proteins in the ribosome the way mRNA does. The act as controls on longer sequences of mRNA to turn on or off certain regions of the longer molecule.

Yes. They are not mRNA gene products coding for protein that are translated on the ribosome, but regulatory RNA molecules often with enzymatic properties.

It’s micro RNA (miRNA), not messenger RNA (mRNA).

Discovered in 1993.

Helpful developments since 1993...

Zero?

It takes a while to earn a Nobel in Medicine, so a useful discovery in 1993 has been contributing all that time.

That's what I am saying - it takes a long time to be recognized and develop the broad acceptance to even get the award.

Look at the two men who discovered ulcers were from bacteria. They started in the early 80's, and they were ridiculed. They didn't get the Nobel Prize until 2005.

Barbara McClintock made her discovery in 1944, and she didn't win her Nobel until 1983!

I guess your parents never get to be proud of you.

Yup. Of course, she spent 39 years not making a sandwich for some man in the easy chair, so, she deserved it. /rimshot!

Luis Alvarez won the Physics Nobel (unshared) in 1968, basically for his career, which started in earnest in 1936. He was a protege’ and then colleague of Ernest Lawrence, who won (unshared) in 1939.
