Viking era tales of fearsome female warriors fighting side-by-side with men have long aroused suspicions that women may, too, have dominated the battlefield. But, with little evidence to prove their presence, the idea has remained controversial, and many have dismissed it as folklore. Now, for the first time, scientists have confirmed the existence of a female Viking warrior, using DNA retrieved from a 10th century skeleton buried in the Swedish Viking town, Birka.

Doesn’t ANYBODY watch “The Vikings” on History Channel?
Now Lagertha, that is one badass Viking warrior.
The vikings used women in shield walls to make their numbers seem larger but there’s no actual records showing that women were in any way effective in combat. The few times that women’s bodies where found among the dead men was after the vikings lost badly more of an indication that female warriors suck when used. Nor did their men seem particularly enamored by their liberated women. Where ever the viking settled they quickly switched to patriarchal marriage with the families who didn’t switch were quickly out bred by the families who did switch.
This should be an interesting thread.
The whole shield maiden thing seems to be mostly myth. TV “history” is enamored with it because we have to keep the “new myth” that women can stand toe-to-toe with men is hand-to-hand combat. I guarantee wearing a shirt of mail (maybe!) holding a shield and whacking with a sword in a life or death environment is not the same as going to Cross-Fit! No matter how much modern young women want it to be so or how many times its portrayed as true on TV.
> Is her name Yara or Ygritte?
She’s probably the shield-maiden, Brunhilde.
This is actually what happens when men and women fight:

Note that the guy was pulling his punches to avoid doing serious harm to her. If he had been going full bore she would have been down in seconds.
*snort*
There are variations... Clubs. AR-15's. Etc.
Since I'm still drawing breath, I've done well by it.
I’m not sure. They know she was the first because 00000000001 was on her dog-tags.
That show so jumped the shark... hard... when that idiot character of fantasy female badassery killed that viking male for raping a woman of a village they were raiding. And when confronted over it back at the Hall, everyone was like “oh, well then, he so deserved it”.
Because viking raiders were so anti rape, right?
SJW dumbassery complete with way over the top Mary Sue.
She is a hottie though.
Don’t mess with Lagertha; she held her own version of “the Red Wedding.”
Not long ago, she commented on "what happens when men and women fight", as she's had a number of matches with men. Specifically, she said that speed and balance are about even - but - men have the mass to absorb impacts that would normally cripple her, that they have far more stamina, and catastrophically more power.
Me? She'd kick my butt. No question. But in a "fair fight" with someone who knew what they were doing? She - herself - said that unless she was very lucky, she loses every time.
And this is a woman who trains to fight, who's in excellent shape, and well-prepared. Jane Doe off the street? Wouldn't have a chance.

Leif Erikson’s daughter lived up to the shield maiden myth...
I think TV is enamored of the "Warrior Princess" because the concept generates good ratings. I'm not sure why. Female warriors always seem to be too poor to afford much clothing.
