Pendant from 41,500 years ago may have uncovered a 'step in evolution'

In 2010, scientists unearthed an ivory pendant from an abandoned Polish cave. Punctured with patterns reminiscent of moon cycles and mathematics, the artifact's origins eluded archaeologists -- until now. An international team of researchers just declared the relic to be 41,500 years old.

That makes it the earliest piece of ornate jewelry ever found in Eurasia, and a wonderful reminder that art is timeless. Images and details of the discovery were published Thursday in the journal Scientific Reports.

But beyond its aesthetic value, this ancient pendant also marks the first proof of post-Neanderthal civilization in the Polish region...

Supposedly the Homo Sapien branch of the tree of life emerged ~200,000 years ago (some sources think nearer to 300,000). And equally supposedly, they were in essence physically identical to modern humans, which, among other things, means an equally developed brain. So they would have had the same intellectual capacity as we do today.

Which is why I am disinclined to believe that after 160,000 years, this was the best early modern humans could do. I am more inclined to believe they made art even more sophisticated than this long before this but either it didn’t survive or we simply haven’t yet dug in the right places.

It bears mention that Gobekli Tepe wasn’t unearthed until 1995. And Gobekli Tepe proved that the African diaspora occurred at least 5000 years earlier than previously thought. So if an entire city could remain hidden for that long, how elusive might the odd piece of jewelry be?

Sorry, I meant Catalhoyuk, not Gobekli Tepe.

The Bible is not a scientific document, and was never intended to be. It does not provide the age of the earth.

Like your thinking, realizing age of a material is not necessarily age of it’s use.

Can you imagine some future archaeologist claiming the words of a Beatles tune carved on some petrified piece of wood are as old as that piece of wood? Hopefully future archaeologists will be smarter than that.

What he’s saying is that the Ivory can be carbon dated to 41,000 years ago but somebody may have carved it many many years Later.

The early archaeological sites of ancient cities in the Middle East came long after modern human migrations into Eurasia.

You should have carved 1588. That would really have caused a buzz.

If women understood how lip stick evolved most of them wouldn’t wear it.

Not after a blow by blow accounting of it.
