Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

The depression creeps closer, my sister was laid off on the first, she is in insurance of commercial properties.

We talked today, guess if she finds a job it will be at 50 percent of her past wages.

So far the only jobs are on commission and she is too old to start over at that level and has too much experience to be wasted selling car insurance.

Unless she gets desperate.

Currently the big paper companies are negotiating with wealthy developers to sell thousands of acres around Moosehead Lake. So far, they have been unable to get the required permits. I am a firm believer in it’s my land, I can sell to whomever I wish, but if these negotiations are successful, the days of pulling up along that magnificent lake to camp, completely alone, in the wilderness will be over. It’s a catch 22.

I, too, worked with people and it was a blessing to finish the day and relax at home away from confusion and complaints. As a postmaster, I was told that I would be the only federal person that would come into daily contact with the people of my community and it was my job to leave a good impression. I had to smile as I told patrons, “no, I can’t tell you if so and so’s check is in her box, or no, I don’t have your Playboy in my office, it will be in your box as soon as I receive it. or a good one, no, you can’t wire your rural box so vandals will receive a shock and a real winner when I delicately told the Postal Inspectors about a gun toting “gentleman” who called me a “fornicating rectum” LOL I truly could write a book, but I survived and really enjoy the peace and quiet of my retirement.

http://www.bigmedicine.ca/americas.htm#Canada:_Warning:_A_small_number_of_b

Canada: Warning: A small number of bottles of the antibiotic Rofact [Rifampin] may contain a different drug [May 16 Ottawa ON]—Health Canada is warning consumers that there is a small possibility that some bottles of one lot of Rofact® (rifampin), an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis (TB) and some other infections, may contain the drug clonazepam instead of the antibiotic rifampin. The affected lot number of Rofact® is 8K5467, and the Drug Identification Number (DIN) is 00343617. Clonazepam is an anti-epileptic medication and has sedating properties. The manufacturer, Valeant Canada, is initiating a recall to the retail level.

Consumers who have Rofact® (rifampin) at home are advised to check their bottle of medication and confirm that they have the correct, prescribed drug. The bottles in question are for Rofact® 300 mg, and were erroneously filled with clonazepam 0.5 mg. Rofact® (rifampin) is an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis (TB) and some other infections. Rofact® 300 mg are hard capsules, brown and dark red in colour, and marked ‘ICN R12’ while the clonazepam pills are orange, round tablets and are marked ‘c31’ and ‘0.5’. If the bottle has the wrong medication (orange round tablets) in it, consumers should contact their treating physician as soon as possible and notify their pharmacist. If there is any doubt, contact the pharmacist.

Persons who think they may have been mistakenly taking clonazepam instead of Rofact®, (rifampin) any time since the middle of December, 2008 should contact the physician treating them and their public health TB nurse (if they are being treated for tuberculosis) as soon as possible to get the proper medication and treatment advice. However, patients should not stop taking their prescription until directed by their physician. Some patients who suspect that they have mistakenly received clonazepam may need to be gradually taken off the drug to avoid withdrawal symptoms under the supervision of their physician.

Health Canada is working with the Public Health Agency of Canada to notify public health physicians and tuberculosis clinics of this issue.

Clonazepam belongs in the prescription class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. It is indicated for treatment of certain seizure disorders and also prescribed for anxiety and panic disorders. The side-effects associated with the use of products containing clonazepam vary according to the individual and can include dizziness, drowsiness, muscle weakness, confusion, and loss of memory. Due to the potential for impairment of mental alertness or physical coordination, patients exposed to clonazepam may be at risk of accidents when operating machinery or driving a motor vehicle.

The bottles were mislabelled due to a production error, and it is believed that a maximum of four bottles were filled incorrectly at the factory. One was discovered by a pharmacist before any medication was dispensed to a consumer, therefore at most three bottles may be on the Canadian market. Prescriptions of Rofact® may be dispensed from a pharmacy in smaller amounts and not in the original bottle. The incorrectly labelled bottles of Rofact® may have been on the Canadian market since December 2008.

You can report any adverse reactions associated with the use of health products to the Canada Vigilance Program by one of the following three ways:

Laughing and betting that you are like our Helen Graves, the Post Mistress of the Kingman substation, for many years.

She not only will check to make sure your check is not mis-placed, but will write one of hers to hold you over.

We take her boxes of books, she is a reader and keeps a box in the lobby, for those of us who are always ready for another to read.

A beautiful fine Christian Lady......

Her mother had one of the first vacuum cleaners in our county and it worked fine, until Helen’s dad took it to the gold mine and vacuumed up gold dust and Rocks.

I would feel sorry for anyone that got nasty with Helen, for half the town would attack the attacker.

I haven’t been in to see her since I got sick and I should have done so, for I miss her smiling person.

So now I know who you are, another Helen of that i am sure.

Home should mean peace, and quiet, to me.

You are going to hate the lake being a resort.

Something about the people who go to resorts and forget all they were ever taught, both manners and morals.

But then I agree, if a person owns the land, it is theirs to use as they see fit.

Must be for his people to to monitor, for the cops say he is pulling funding from some of the federal police programs.

There is no end to the ‘changes ‘ he will make.

The soy cheese and margarine are the worst....Anyone having any health problems or problems getting pregnant should check out the soy intolerance sits on the Internet. The facts are there. Eat God made food not man made.

My son and I have laughed at the “green” projects on HGTV. We've lived that way for generations. The liberals are just figuring it out. We garden, recycle, care for the land etc.

I live in a barn with floors made from the local school gym floor, heat with wood, plant many trees and plants friendly to wild life each year, have a tin roof and generally “Conserve” whenever possible....that's what conservatives do!

Liberals are late getting on the bus.

Welcome to the thread....

>>>We’ve lived that way for generations. The liberals are just figuring it out. We garden, recycle, care for the land etc.<<<

That is the best way to approach conservation (or ecology as they now call it)... People who have a vested interest in their land, who live on it, improve it, depend on it, care for it are far better than remote liberal PhD’s who ‘theorize’ as to the best use and practices, statistically analyze things but who couldn’t put it into actual practice successfully themselves if they had to.

Again, welcome to the thread - we look forward to your experience sharing, questions, and general participation.

Granny keeps us all motivated and is a wealth of information.

3. Can opener. I sort of chuckled as I wrote this, because we always hear jokes of people being stranded with canned goods and no can opener.

We were on vacation back during Blue Law times. There was nothing open on Sunday. We were starving. We finally found a grocery store open so I ran in to get a couple cans of pork 'n beans and a can opener. The store refused to allow me to buy the can opener.

Thanks for the ping. :) I *knew* the commonsense folks were here somewhere, just hadn’t been able to find this thread. I’ll try to keep up but I’ll be gone a lot as we’re gearing up for the “big move” and will be making lots of “back and forth” trips over the next few months. :)
