Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

However, I did plant almost 100 root tips from scallions I found in my compost today. Maybe I’ll get lots of onions from them. <<<<<

I had to laugh out loud at that one.

Yes, I get fresh food once a month, when Scott goes shopping.

This month, he forgot the shopping list, so didn’t get half of it, said it was in the car.

Without him, I would have no fresh food, I lived a year without it and got only the bulk /and dried from Walton Feed.com, as they do not have fresh.

They were good to me and shipped to me at once, even large orders, as they knew it was not for storage, or only partly.

That is why I do not even consider a different company, I checked prices etc, before my first order and you may find something on sale elsewhere, but over all for the stuff I use from them, I will save in the end by staying with Walton.

Guess my grapes will have to serve as tomatoes this time.

I had to quit driving 5 or 6 years ago, I kept passing out and did not know why.

I posted another of the grain type dishes last night, for sausage made from grains, as I think we would be wise to know how to fix it and it should be good, in the south we ate fried cornmeal mush, hominey grits could be fried and even leftover oatmeal.

A little onion and an egg and you have left over mashed potato patties or bean patties to fry in bacon drippings and I like those.

Don’t gang up on me, W Neighbor will eat my medicine for me.

Guaranteed!!! LOL

Yep, you will like it Granny.

One kinda cool thing I found. I fixed Lloyd's cinnamon/honey on toast in the kitchen while he sat in the living room IMing with his kids. This man thinks he cannot have a slice of bread without at least a tablespoon of butter on it. I didn't put nary a drop of butter on the bread, only the cinnamon/honey and he loved it!

carrying on now as if I would never leave the butter off Lloyd's toast....

So, one of my Grama’s old friends recommended making a tea out of watermelon seeds. You crush the watermelon seeds, boil, steep, strain and drink. That will kick any urinary flareups I have in 1/2 day. But, you have to keep your watermelon seeds because an infection doesn’t ever happen when you’ve just eaten a watermelon. ~wink~ <<<

I always save my watermelon seeds, the dirt told me to save them and feed them to the dirt and pray for a watermelon.

LOL, a crazy thought, saving watermelon seeds is no stranger than planting the roots of onions.....from the compost pile no less, I like that one.

If you will drink the cranberry juice at the first sign of trouble it will work, if you wait too long, than I doubt it.

we ate fried cornmeal mush

THAT is one of my absolute favorite things to eat!!!!

It used to disturb my grandfather that I wanted cornmeal mush so often. He'd had times in his childhood when that's all they had and he wanted to give me better. But, I can eat the mush or fry the mush and just love it!

I also like bean patties and potato patties. Unfortunately, I love potatoes but am allergic to them. I grow them. I know at some point I may *have* to eat them or nothing. But, they make me very ill.

>>Link?<<

That was in Granny’s Kudzu post.

Along with 22 Kg Squash and 9 m. tomatoes

55 pound squash and 30 ft. tomatoes...

Hey, that sounds like a Texas story...

Speaking of Texas - It took me a long while to get used to Orange and Yellow meated watermellons... Good, but that color did not prepare my salivary glands for the right taste.

Ma’am. You already know me well enough to know that I loved every moment of that. <<<

Yes, it is a pride that is different, anyone can ‘buy’ their needs, but doing it yourself is wonderful.

All ya gotta do is come on over and dig in. Cantaloupe’s waiting. And I got an extra one that ain’t even cut yet.

Truthfully, I’d mail you one if I thought it would get there fresh. But, it would be nasty mushy compost by then.

I am so blessed to have really quirky kids who can laugh at themselves. Of course, they laugh at their mom too. But, they are fun. And both very good company. <<<

I knew they would be special, as you are.

You will have to let Lloyd read the thread, no way to explain the bits and parts.

The world needs people who will step out and try some things. How would anyone have ever found something practical that worked if no one tried. LOL

I just cannot throw away a seed. Most of the grocery store seeds I know will not make anything. But, it is really hard to throw seeds out. I have a bag full of peach seeds in the refrigerator that I was going to plant last month that I forgot about. Need to do that! It's spring now!

I cringed! That stuff grows so fast it’s just plumb scary!!! I know it would take me over. <<<

I hear you talking about being taken over and all that I have here is Foxtail and wild mustard, so far it is all the nasty type of mustard.

I did have some of the fine leaf mustard growing wild, but could not go and water it the last 3 years, so it is gone.

LOL, as long as someone’s taking the medicine, I guess we’re ok.

I see from your posts that it’s still cold and rainy. :-(
We’ll all have to buckle down and pray for sunshine for you!

I’m tired of winter here in Chicago and would love to find out where to order up some global warming. Seems as though I spent the last 5 months with perpetually cold feet despite wearing 2 pairs of socks (or more).

Hugs and love backatcha Granny!

Okay, another slightly humerous family story. My littlest daughter went into a very ill-advised marriage right out of high school. She married a guy on vacation from Isreal. Marriage was over shortly but funny story is that the guy was amazed with yellow watermelons also. The couple had eloped in July so in August when I found out I had a watermelon supper to introduce him to the extended family. We had to have red and yellow watermelons. Son-in-law was terribly interested in that different color thing. I told him all the watermelon meat was the same color inside before the melon was cut and it only turned to red or yellow upon being hit by oxygen. Told him the meat was always blue before the first cut was made and then when the O2 hit the inside it changed color.

Dude bought the story. LOL Didn't know some of the Texas BS ratings I guess.

That is so sad, as they are good.

Oh, well, rice and macaroni are almost as good, when used the same way as potatoes.

ROFL! It may not help the memory, but you won’t care one bit that it doesn’t.

I love putting cinnamon in my coffee in the mornings. It goes well with the cinnamon and honey toast. Yum!

Sounds like me, I suggested Scott take home some of the seeds and plant them, he stared at me and did not take them.

LOL, he is not a gardner.

If they grow at all, you will get a shade tree out of the store seeds from fruit.

Might know when I met my match - it would be a Texas Gal.

Which reminds me - I got a call from one of those Texas Gals just before Christmas - Hadn’t heard from her in 45 years. One of those Big D girls - we had been engaged when I was in the Army and she was going to NTWU up in Denton.

Reason I mentioned that is because your neighbor (W) had appointed her to chair the State Nurse Evaluation Board.

When she decided that we should cut off the engagement, her father had big tears in his eyes - He and I used to hunt quite a bit and fish. He was with Texas & Pacific Railroad - had his own caboose that was fully self-contained - Used to have them take it out to a siding in East Texas and we could fish and hunt.

He tried to get me interested in his other daughter, but she was wilder than a march hare... I wasn’t having any part of that...

It was really nice to talk to her and we swapped family stuff. Gotta watch those Texas Girls - they are heart stealers...

The news just said it was snowing hard at Vegas mountains.

For cold feet, try sleeping with them on a pillow, it cured mine.

Part of the doc’s orders.

I am going to need a nap any minute, I missed a couple of them.
