Jay McKinnon, a self-described Department of Homeland Security-trained document specialist, has implicated himself in the production of fraudulent Hawaii birth certificate images similar to the one endorsed as genuine by the Barack Obama campaign, and appearing on the same blog entry where the supposedly authentic document appears.
The evidence of forgery and manipulation of images of official documents, triggered by Israel Insider's revelation of the collection of Hawaii birth certificate images on the Photobucket site and the detective work of independent investigative journalists and imaging professionals in the three weeks since the publication of the images, implicate the Daily Kos, an extreme left blog site, and the Obama campaign, in misleading the public with official-looking but manipulated document images of doubtful provenance.
The perceived unreliability of the image has provoked petitions and widespread demands for Obama to submit for objective inspection the paper versions of the "birth certificate" he claimed in his book Dreams from My Father was in his possession, as well as the paper version of the Certificate of Live Birth for which the image on the Daily Kos and the Obama "Fight the Smears" website was supposedly generated.
Without a valid birth certificate, Obama cannot prove he fulfills the "natural born citizen" requirement of the Constitution, throwing into doubt his eligibility to run for President.
McKinnon, who says he is 25-30 years old, operates a website called OpenDNA.com and uses the OpenDNA screen name on various web sites and blogs, including his comments and diary on The Daily Kos. In recent years he has divided his time between Long Beach, California and Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a Democratic political activist, frequent contributor to the left wing Daily Kos blog, and a fervent Barack Obama supporter.

A: Yes. His campaign made a copy public after speculation by conservative bloggers that he might not be a “natural-born citizen.”
We asked for and received a copy from the Obama campaign. It is too large to display full size on this page, but you may click on this link to see a copy of the document just as we received it.
It indicates Obama was born at 7:24 p.m. Aug. 4, 1961, in Honolulu. That should be no surprise, as it merely documents what Obama and his biographers have always said. But the document should put to rest groundless speculation raised on some conservative Web sites that Obama might not have been born in the U.S. and therefore might not qualify under the Constitution as a “natural-born citizen” to be president.
The speculation was not based on any evidence. Bloggers raised questions based on the absence of evidence, specifically the lack of a publicly available copy of a birth certificate and the supposed “secrecy” surrounding it. For example, the conservative World Net Daily posted a June 10 article with the headline, “Is Obama’s candidacy constitutional?; Secrecy over birth certificate, demand for ‘natural-born’ citizenship cited.” Soon after, some of our readers began asking us the same thing.
The “secrecy” ended when Tommy Vietor at the Obama campaign sent a message to us and other reporters saying, “I know there have been some rumors spreading about Obama’s citizenship, so I wanted to make sure you all had a copy of his birth certificate.” A digital image was attached.
Hawaii state law forbids the release of birth or marriage certificates to anyone but the persons named in the documents or their immediate relatives. This copy carries a date stamp of “Jun 6 - 2007” (which has bled through from the reverse side), and is, therefore, probably a copy obtained by Obama himself at that time.
Incidentally, John McCain has been the subject of similar speculation based on the fact that he was born in the Panama Canal Zone. But as we explained in an earlier Ask FactCheck, he’s also a U.S. citizen under laws going back to 1790, even though he wasn’t born in the country.

That is, Hawaii should release all pertinent records pertaining to the Mr. Obama. Otherwise they have joined the stonewalling.

From Obama's point of view, admission that he is illegitimate is a plus, not a minus--it may get him out of jail on the crucial issue of where he was born as far as his citizenship is concerned. He has considered that path several times and backed away from it because there are facts on the record that are not consistent with that answer.
If his parents were not married, why did Stanley Ann spend several thousand dollars getting a divorce? Signed under oath that she was married?
I don't see that on the copy posted at fightthesmears. Even zooming in to 1000% dosen't show anything at that spot. It's a lower resolution image, but you'd think something would show up.
AJ is correct on several of his assumptions such as the OpenDNA images came after the KOS image and that there was a change in the COLB certificates between the Decosta and the KOS versions. However I have been using a half dozen separate Hawaiian COLBs issued over a 6 year period all the way through 2008 - some hi-res digital scans and some sitting on my desk (real ones) as comparison specimens. And once again to summarize - none of them match the security border of the KOS image. Unlike AJ I just happened to have been lucky enough to have had more than just the Decosta image to work with so that I am able to see the progression of the document modifications through time. (I also called Hawaii and talked to them about it) But from AJ's point of view his observation would be correct having not seen a 2006, other 2007's, or 2008 COLBs. I also realize that there has been some confusion and I am not basing my analysis on the border itself but on the analysis of the actual overall modifications made to the KOS image. The border just happened to be what caught my attention in the first place. Long story short the KOS image is made up of several discrete layers (changes) that can be viewed by using advanced image analysis techniques. [geek alert] Any recent changes made to a JPEG are for lack of a better word "recorded" by the individual 8x8 pixel cells that make up the JPEG. By measuring the differences in error rates and performing wavelet and PCA analysis you can actually show the individual modifications. Mix that with basic observational analysis and metadata extraction and you can form a more complete picture. In the case at hand the KOS COLB was not just simply scanned into Photoshop and a box placed over the certificate number and then exported for the web. The original scan has been saved multiple times, the text and the borders have both been modified, and the background image (the paper) may be the only thing still "real" in the image. Unfortunately there is no way to know what the original state of the document was (you can not bring things back from the dead at least I can’t) but it is not in the same state as the original scan. The best I can do is show you what changes were made with an estimate as to order in which they were modified. Why they were made and who made them is not my concern.While AJ and I may poke fun at each other it is not in a mean spirited way. And on a serious note I would like to get AJ’s take on the analysis techniques I have been using. But on a side note if AJ or anyone else has any questions for me feel free to post them. I will answer anything you ask to the best of my abilities but you might want to wait a few more days so you can read the entire report - so far just explaining the methodology and the science behind them has put it over a dozen typed pages (I obviously also need to edit them down a bit). It may have to be posted in parts at this rate. P.S. - For giggles I also used the same analysis method against McCains posted COLB...it is not modified (are you shocked?) and tossed it into the report for good measure. I also added in a few known modified images so you can see how the process works.

The food fight last night was quite unfortunate. None of it sheds any light on the substantive issues here and it likely detracts serious critics.
#3395 is a fair summary of the technical. The forms posted purporting to be Birth Certificates are not actual reliable certificates of public birth records. The possibility may exist that Obama was born in Hawaii but I read the current record as casting real doubt on that question which is one of the two significant substantive issues, the second being, if he was born in Kenya, the marital status of his parents.
I am concerned about the Martin book--if it is poorly done, it will damage the effort to initiate a real investigation on the question of whether Obama is eligible to serve as President. The crucial question is whether or not Martin has had access to birth and marriage records obtained in Kenya--if yes, everything else in the book pales in significance; if no, the book is simply another delay.
His first publicity line about illegitimacy is a bad sign because it indicates that he doesn't understand the legal or the practical political. Illegitimacy is the least of Obama's problems--no one cares; it may well be a plus on the eligibility argument. I believe over half the children born in America are illegitimate--a sad commentary on the state of our society but not a substantive political problem for a candidate whose parents were not married.
Obama has told many other lies of substantive impact; his parents marital status is important only to the extent it affects his citizenship.
Nothing we can do about it at this point so we will wait for Thursday to see.

I do agree with that. I have the book pre ordered and will read it in it’s entirety before posting excerpts.

Yes and no. If the MSM was an even playing field, outrageousness would not be necessary. But, the MSM creates an uneven delivery of information. Therefore, being off color is a way to be picked up.

Not true. It is important to show the layer of bricks of lies he has personally built. Each one needs to be removed.

I don’t believe Hawaii can legally do that, I am not sure.
You can certainly try to put in a FOIA request.
Logically, the burden is on Obama, he’s the candidate.
As far as i can tell, the core of the disagreement is this:
“What Techdude took as a really, really bad forgery I had always concluded represented an updated background and paper for the Hawaii COLB. It never occurred to me any serious adult would confuse two clearly different documents, separated by 5 years, as being some kind of forgery.”
Either the Obama COLB got the background ‘wrong’ and is a forgery, or the Obama COLB has a background which matches the real form output for those who made the request in June 2007, thus validating its varacity as a scan of a real COLB.
The DeCosta 2002 form doesnt conclusively prove a forgery, as the background may have changed. Hawaii freepers could request COLB copies *today* and thereby shed light on the format.
