Centuries of storytelling, scholarship, and reinterpretation have shaped how we imagine the Vikings and their gods, but much of that image may rest on myth rather than history. Scholars are now uncovering how Christian writers, political movements, and even modern pop culture redefined the “pagan North” to reflect their own ideals. Credit: Shutterstock ============================================================================= Scholars reveal that much of what we think we know about Vikings and Norse mythology is based on later reinterpretations rather than original sources. Scholars in the field of Scandinavian studies caution that much of what people believe about Vikings and Norse paganism cannot be confirmed...

Democratic strategist James Carville predicted on his "Politics War Room" podcast that Democrats will win the 2028 presidential election and move to expand the Supreme Court. CARVILLE: So I want to talk to Chief Justice Roberts, Justice Alito, Justice Barrett, Justice Kavanaugh, Justice Gorsuch. I might be forgetting one. I'm going to tell you what's going to happen. A Democrat is going to be elected in 2028. You know that, I know that. It's going to be a Democratic House. It's going to be a Democratic Senate. The Democratic president is going to announce a special transition advisory committee on...

If Chuck Schumer and his gang actually had to stand up and talk for days at a time, maybe they wouldn’t be so arrogant about keeping their Obamacare subsidies in the budget. And if the rest of the Senate couldn’t do any other business that would be fine. The same thing goes for the Republicans when they’re in the minority. In any case, if you’re going to have a filibuster, make them do it right!

The Supreme Court on Monday declined an opportunity to overturn its landmark precedent recognizing a constitutional right to same-sex marriage, tossing aside an appeal that had roiled LGBTQ advocates who feared the conservative court might be ready to revisit the decade-old decision. Instead, the court denied an appeal from Kim Davis, the former Kentucky county clerk who now faces hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages and legal fees for refusing to issue marriage licenses after the court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges allowed same-sex couples to marry. The court did not explain its reasoning to deny the appeal, which...

Below is my column in the Hill on moments of honesty after the recent Democratic victories in California, Virginia, New Jersey, and New York. In the euphoria that followed, Democratic politicians and pundits admitted that they intend to pursue radical changes, including packing the Supreme Court, once they retake power. Here is the column: “In vino veritas.” The Roman proverb — “In wine, there is truth” — reflects the fact that people are often at their most honest when they’ve had a few. Elections can have the same effect for some to become drunk on even the prospect of power....

A Danville public school teacher is on leave following a controversial social media post that has sparked significant backlash. Dr. Sabrina Kent Morris, a history and government teacher at George Washington High School, reposted an image on Instagram from @Dream.foramerica that depicted a rainbow-colored gun pointing at the back of a man's head with the caption, "Put the pronouns back in the email." The image was blurred due to its violent nature. The controversy gained traction after a right-leaning social media account, @LibsofTikTok, highlighted the post on X, leading to coverage by "The Gutfeld Program" on Fox News. Danville residents...

The Supreme Court on Monday morning turned down a request from Kim Davis, a former county clerk in Kentucky, to reconsider its 2015 decision recognizing a constitutional right to same-sex marriage. In a brief, unsigned order, the justices rejected Davis’ petition for review of a ruling by a federal appeals court upholding an award of $100,000 to a gay couple to whom she had refused to issue a marriage license. That petition had also asked the justices to overrule the 2015 decision, Obergefell v. Hodges, arguing that a right to same-sex marriage “had no basis in the Constitution.” As is...

1. According to legend, the first Marine Corps recruitments took place in a bar. Marine tradition holds that the Corps was formed in a bar. The story dates to late November 1775, when newly commissioned Captains Samuel Nicholas and Robert Mullan supposedly organized the first Marine Corps muster at Tun Tavern, a popular watering hole in Philadelphia. The two officers are said to have lured potential Marines with mugs of beer and the promise of adventure on the high seas, and their recruits later made up the first five companies that served aboard Continental Navy ships. While there’s little hard...

SEBASTIAN, Fla. — A Sebastian man with an extensive criminal history was taken into custody this week in Indian River County after a standoff that lasted several hours, deputies said. Chuck Schumer handed his head on a plate to President Trump last night as he surrendered on shutting down the government. After 40 days of slithering to the microphone each day with a new rant to an increasingly bored media about our favorite president, Chuck realized the futility of shutting down the government because all he did was anger the Democrat Party’s key constituent—welfare recipients—and leave helpless airline passengers stranded in city after city. Trump meanwhile went about his life as usual, savoring every minute of his final presidency. He went to Asia and signed historic peace and trade agreements....

Two top bosses at the BBC, including Tim Davie, its director-general and editor-in-chief, have resigned after a bombshell report found it “doctored” video of a speech President Donald Trump gave to make it appear like he was calling on his supporters to “fight” and be violent during the Jan. 6 Capitol Riot. BBC News CEO Deborah Turness joined Davie in quitting; she resigned on Saturday, and Davie quit on Sunday. Their resignations come less than a week after The Telegraph reported editors for Panorama, the BBC’s longest-running investigative series, duped viewers during an October 2024 special by altering the sequence...

Eight members of the Senate Democratic caucus voted Sunday evening to proceed to a House-passed continuing resolution, taking a major step toward ending the 40-day shutdown. It sets the stage for the House to return to Washington later this week to vote on the bill in hope of getting to President Trump’s desk for his...

BELEM, Brazil (AP) — U.N. climate negotiations were expected to begin Monday at a meeting on the edge of the Brazilian Amazon, with leaders pushing for urgency, cooperation and acceleration after more than 30 years fighting to curb global warming by drastically reducing the carbon pollution that causes it. André Corrêa do Lago, president of this year’s conference, known as COP30, emphasized that negotiators engage in “mutirão,” a Brazilian word derived from an Indigenous word that refers to a group uniting to work on a shared task. Complicating the calls for togetherness is the United States. The Trump administration did...
