Religion may be a survival mechanism. Ian Semple investigates whether we are born to believe. First, some figures. Last year a poll found that 85 per cent of Americans believe God created the universe. In Nigeria, 98 per cent claimed always to have believed in God, while nine out of 10 Indonesians said they would die for their God or religious beliefs, says the ICM Research survey, which questioned 10,000 people. In Ireland, 87 per cent of the population believe in God, a survey by the Market Research Bureau of Ireland found in January. Rather than rocking their faith, 19...

Tried for a weekend to install NSW on an AMD system running XP Pro. No go. Spent hours on the phone with Symantec. No good. Installed Ghost. Installs fine; errors out when run. I thought by now AMD systems would be fully compatible; evidently I was wrong. "Fully contemptible" might be more appropriate. Any suggestions? I am thinking of pitching it and going back to intel. --Boris

Italian public television broadcasted the ceremony live. The Mass took place in the cathedral of Milan. Monsignor Giussani died Tuesday at age 82. The Pope expressed his admiration for the...

Earlier this year, researchers in Spain made a remarkable scientific discovery. Rats are capable of discerning the rhythms of the human language and can tell the difference between different languages. According to the Reuters story, the "study suggests that animals, especially mammals, evolved some of the skills underlying the use and development of language long before language itself ever evolved." There is only a slight catch with the researchers' evolutionary explanation, it does not make any sense. Rather than support evolution, these findings actually reinforce the Creation model of the world. The research seems to indicate yet another weakness of...

Alvin Plantinga - Department of Philosophy - Decio Hall - University of Notre Dame Methodological Naturalism? Abstract The philosophical doctrine of methodological naturalism holds that, for any study of the world to qualify as "scientific," it cannot refer to God's creative activity (or any sort of divine activity). The methods of science, it is claimed, "give us no purchase" on theological propositions--even if the latter are true--and theology therefore cannot influence scientific explanation or theory justification. Thus, science is said to be religiously neutral, if only because science and religion are, by their very natures, epistemically distinct. However, the actual...

We all understand seed produces after it's own kind. If you plant pumpkin seeds you're going to get a pumpkin, if you plant cucumber seeds you're going to get cucumbers, etc. This makes sense doesn't it? Even wheat seeds found in the pyramids and planted produced wheat. Jesus says that the seed is the Word of God. Paul taught a person the Word of God and he became a Christian. Peter taught a person the Word of God and he became a Christian. The Word of God makes a Christian. If you ask someone about their religion and they say...

Somewhere between Rathergate and Easongate a germ of an idea caught hold that the blogosphere is hell-bent on destroying and “bringing down” the Old Media. Certainly that is how the Old Media sees the struggle. Maybe, too, there are those here in the New Media who see it that way. We don’t. And we don’t want to be part of any “cyber lynch mob” to eliminate the Old Media altogether. Of course, it is my considered opinion no such controversy exists. Look at the top right-of-center bloggers: Instapundit, Hugh Hewitt, Power Line (and many more.) I don’t believe they see...

Rome, Feb. 11, 2005 (CNA) - Forensic scientists in Italy are working on a different kind of investigation—one that dates back 2000 years. In an astounding announcement, the scientists think they may have re-created an image of Jesus Christ when He was a 12-year old boy.Using the Shroud of Turin, a centuries-old linen cloth, which many believe bears the face of the crucified Christ, the investigators first created a computer-modeled, composite picture of the Christ’s face.Dr. Carlo Bui, one of the scientists said that, “the face of the man on the shroud is the face of a suffering man. He...

If there is more to the story UNLV, let's here it. Don't hide behind the weak argument of protecting the student's identity. We don't want to know the student's identity. We want to know why you are trying to discipline Prof. Hoppe. To the UNLV officials responsible for putting out the above referenced press release, you should be ashamed that you did so. Frankly this press release looks to me like the Politically Correct Crowd getting caught with their pants down, and now they are trying to run for cover.

Businessman wants site for Ten Commandments monument. CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. (AP) -- A man who says he represents an atheist group is planning to bid for a small plot of the county courthouse lawn that a businessman has said he wants to buy as the site for a Ten Commandments monument. Earl Myler, who heads a company that designs and builds churches, has proposed to Montgomery County commissioners a plan to buy the property in order to return a Ten Commandments monument to the lawn, where a previous monument was removed in 2001. Ken Lewis said his atheist group would bid...

I was lying in bed thinking about articles I had read concerning the recent tsunami in the Indian Ocean. I remembered reading that a village of thousands of Hindus that should have been wiped out was spared because a village elder had instructed years ago that hundreds of trees had to be planted along the coast for religious reasons. Those trees miraculously spared the village and not one Hindu was drowned. Not one. Spooky. Then I remembered an article that there were no dead or drowned animals. Not one carcass was found apparently. Spooky. Also no aboriginal people were drowned, not...

Hamilton, Ontario, Jan. 28, 2005 (CNA) - Canadian archaeologist Russell Adams, a professor at McMaster University has recently unearthed evidence, which helps to show the historical accuracy of the Bible.Professor Adams and his team of colleagues have found information that points to the existence of the Biblical Kingdom of Edom existing at precisely the time Scripture claims it existed. The evidence flies in the face of a common belief that Edom actually came into existence at least 200 years later. According to the Canadian Globe and Mail, the group’s findings “mean that those scholars convinced that the Hebrew Old Testament...
