Summary
WASHINGTON, Aug 24 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's push for Republican-led states to redraw their U.S. House of Representatives districts to protect their majority in next year's midterm elections could set the stage for Republicans to dominate the chamber in decades to come, political analysts and experts said.
Republicans hold a 219-212 House majority and Trump is looking to break the streak of midterm House losses for the sitting president's party -- as happened to him in 2018 and to Democratic President Joe Biden in 2022 -- by pushing states starting with Texas to aggressively redistrict.
Democratic states, led by California, have threatened to retaliate by redrawing their own districts for partisan gain, a longstanding feature of U.S. politics known as gerrymandering that has grown far more potent thanks to modern data analysis tools.
But Republicans hold the advantage, with control of the state legislatures and governorships of 23 states, compared with 15 for Democrats. Further, independent analysts say, population shifts could create as many as 11 new congressional seats in Republican Southern and Western states after the 2030 U.S. Census.
Democrats enjoyed 40 years of unbroken House control beginning in 1955 and ending in 1995 as conservative Southern Democrats defected to the Republican Party in earnest.
The current redistricting battle has raised concerns about a new era of gerrymandering, with Republicans and Democrats jockeying for advantage and further dividing an already polarized nation.
"I feel like it's cheating," said Adam Kinzinger, a Trump critic and former Republican congressman who lost his Illinois seat to redistricting after the 2020 census. "Every time we break a norm in politics now, that norm never comes..."

They say that like it's a bad thing.
It’s correct because Dems have been doing this for decades and Republicans are only not looking at it. R’s have much more potential to gain, D’s have squeezed about all the blood they can out of this turnip.
Are the redistricting rules based on lawful guidelines? Yes. Trim never does anything unlawful
Why don’t democrats just redistrict themselves? Because they’ve done so much of it (with out gop wimp pushback) that they’re maxxed out on their ability to do so legally?
Why is Trump pushing for it? I done know if he is but if he is it’s because gop are useless, feckless, wimpy and turtle like
Boy would that suck. For the dumbocrats and libs. Perhaps they would actually move to their little utopias. Wherever that may be.
I pray to God we are going through another great era of major electoral realignment in US history. Between 1860-1932 Republicans dominated the country’s politics. From 1932 arguably to 2024 the Democrats had the upper hand as the more dominant party. From 1932 to Newt Gingrich’s 1994 “Republican Revolution,” Republicans only held the House for 4 of those 62 years. It is the norm for one party to dominate our politics at a time and the other party to have an uphill climb.
It’s time for a major realignment back to Republicans as the main national party and for that to remain so for many decades, so I hope we don’t blow it (both the weak RINOs and the unrealistic and overly demanding purists) or that “circumstances” don’t prevent it.
That was the plan all along, and the Democrats, especially hair boy, fell for it. There will be a call to outlaw gerrymandering, and then they Republicans will win.
The Dumocrats had it for decades... From 1930s thru to the 1980s they controlled congress and the senate. What’s good for the goose is always good for the gander. Or... If it was fine when the Jackasses controlled congress... It should be fine with Elephants controlling congress for a few decades.
A laudable goal that will hopefully succeed. 👏
As El Rush-Bo often points out, the democRAT Party is, at best, a small, bi-coastal minority.
Rush also points out that after the 2016 election, there were only 5 States with both a democRAT Legislature and a democRAT governor.
This is why they have to cheat. This is why they have to pay people to protest. This is why they insist upon counting illegal trespassers in the census.
I can hear Massie speaking out against this already....
Well, it is Rooters.
GROK says that if illegal aliens aren’t counted, California will lose 2 to 4 congressional districts.
Other sanctuary states may lose congressional districts too if illegals are excluded with a new census.
Republicans controlling the House for decades would be a bad thing but rodent control of the House for 40 years was a good thing right?
Go away and stop embarrassing yourself.
If illegal aliens aren’t counted, California will eliminate 2 to 4 Republican held congressional districts.
It figures that the sniveling maggot Adam Kinzinger would be complaining after the fact. Where was his complaints when the Rats were gerrymandering outrageous district boundaries for themselves (like in Maryland and Illinois). He waits until after his own district is reshaped to speak up.
He is such a sniveling toad. If I ever saw that worm in a bar, I would pop one of his greasy pimples. Him and Lizard Cheney are pariah’s. /spit
One party rule is never a good thing after a time.
So...?
Democrats had it, but Democrat and Gop Conservatives had a majority from 1938 to 1965.
It is. It is. I am so upset. I’m going to cry. Wahh. Boohoo. Sniff. Blow nose. Snarf./sarc
