SIOUX CITY, IOWA -- Fred Thompson continued to fire back at reports that he will drop out of the race if he has a low finish in Iowa, this time saying the press was partly to blame. “I’m afraid the media never gets tired of allowing itself to be used,” he said. “And I think that quite frankly the media is being used for purposes to hurt me here in the last few days because they see what’s happening.” What’s happening, according to Thompson, is that some polls show him gaining in Iowa. “We’re working day and night for the...

Well my son came home from school with a very interesting school project for the weekend. He was asked to find out how many trees there are in the United States. The student who comes closest to the answer on Monday will get to give a presentation to the class on how he/she did the research to come up with the most right answer. The teacher said that the answer can be found by using Google but you will need to be "very creative" with your search terms and you will need to visit multiple sites before arriving at the...

WASHINGTON, July 9, 2007 – Iraqi security forces are not yet ready to secure their country, and if U.S. troops were withdrawn too soon, violence would escalate, a top U.S. commander in the region said yesterday. “It would be a mess,” Army Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch, commander of coalition forces operating in the region south of Baghdad, said in an interview on CNN’s “Late Edition With Wolf Blitzer” yesterday. “(If) those surge forces go away, that capability goes away, and the Iraqi security forces aren't ready yet to do that. If you did that, … you'd find the enemy regaining...

Prof. Erie's San Diego Drought Paranoia Thesis Proven Wrong Professor Steven P. Erie in his recent book Beyond Chinatown: The Metropolitan Water District, Growth, and the Environment in Southern California (2006) portrays as paranoid San Diego's fear of being the first to have wholesale water supplies cut off in the event of a regional drought. Erie’s book incessantly pooh-poohs the perspective of San Diego water officials that what they were fighting for was equal priority “water rights” from MWD’s system in the event of a regional drought or a political drought. As San Diego Water Authority General Manager Maureen Stapleton...

Simultaneous raids carried out in four Alabama counties Thursday turned up truckloads of explosives and weapons, including 130 grenades, an improvised rocket launcher and 2,500 rounds of ammunition belonging to the small, but mightily armed, Alabama Free Militia. Six alleged members of the Free Militia also were arrested by federal authorities and are being held without bond. Investigators said the DeKalb County-based group had not made any specific threats or devised any plots, but was targeted for swift dismantling because of its heavy firepower. The militia, which called itself the Naval Militia at one point, had enough armament to outfit...

Two intro lines of a 40-year-old song by Buffalo Springfield have been running through my head the past couple of days. "There's something happening here, what it is ain't exactly clear," begins the song, "For What It's Worth." It came to represent a generation's opposition to the Vietnam War. But the opening words may come to reflect the uncertainty of a new generation facing an entirely different problem: female teachers having sex with male students. A 24-year-old Salpointe Catholic High School teacher resigned March 16 after allegations of a physical relationship with a student. Fortunately, Salpointe school officials notified police...

The liberal media are having a field day trying to portray the Republican Party and conservatives in disarray. The crescendo has reached a new peak this week with Time magazine's cover picture of Ronald Reagan with a tear on his cheek. But Time's story, "How the Right Went Wrong," is a superficial and simpleminded caricature of what is going on with Republicans. First of all, as anyone with a passing awareness of political history knows, Reagan himself had anything but a cakewalk in reaching the leadership of the party and the presidency. His landslide victory in 1984 was the culmination...

WASHINGTON - Although he frequently makes a point of finding something charitable to say about his opponents’ arguments, Sen. Barack Obama almost always ends up voting liberal. “The arguments of liberals are more often grounded in reason and fact,” the Illinois Democrat wrote in “The Audacity of Hope,” a memoir published last year. “Much of what I absorbed from the sixties was filtered through my mother, who to the end of her life would proudly proclaim herself an unreconstructed liberal.” Obama has a 95 percent liberal rating from Americans for Democratic Reform, a liberal advocacy group that ranks all members...

'Not left or right; right or wrong!" That's the current marketing slogan of a local talk radio station (not mine). It's a clever turn of a phrase and an interesting approach to establishing product differentiation from competing talk stations that promote the conventional split between liberals and conservatives. This imaging strategy is designed to convey the impression that the programmers, personalities and producers on that station somehow rise above the limitations of ideology and the pettiness of partisan politics. The station and radio show (Caplis & Silverman) that Mike is talking about - http://www.khow.com/pages/shows-caplis_silverman.htmlIn theory, this might attract listeners that...

The Liberal Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness By Lyle H. Rossiter, Jr, MD Monday, December 4, 2006 Dr. Lyle H. Rossiter, Jr.,a forensic psychiatrist, explains the madness of liberalism in his new book The Liberal Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness. You can read an excerpt below, and read more at his website libertymind.com. Like all other human beings, the modern liberal reveals his true character, including his madness, in what he values and devalues, in what he articulates with passion. Of special interest, however, are the many values about which the modern liberal mind is not...

So I mentioned to a friend today how nice it was to see the Dow surging, possibly breaking a record high soon. My liberal friend said, "Oh, the Dow has nothing to do with the economy. They are completely opposite." BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA! I just kind of chuckled and said, "Whatever!" S/he insisted on saying, "No really, it doesn't. They're just basically different." I refused to take the bait and get in an argument. I thought it was funny, but kind of sad: this person has deluded themselves into thinking this surge in the stock market...

WASHINGTON, Sept. 22, 2006 – Freedom and democracy are what works in the world, and the enemies in the war on terror have hijacked the Islamic faith to promote their own violent agenda and paint a negative picture of America and other free nations, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said here today. “The idea that the reason there are problems in the world is the United States is baloney. We are not what’s wrong with the world,” Rumsfeld said at a Pentagon town hall meeting. Any movement that begins with oppression and harshness is doomed to failure, and evidence of...

Some may call it exploiting racial tensions. CBS calls it darn good television. Jeff Probst popped in on The Early Show Wednesday morning, confirming the reports that the 20 castaways for Survivor: Cook Islands will be grouped by race, with competitors divided into four tribes consisting of whites, blacks, Asians and Hispanics. Apparently, "separate but equal" holds only the warmest of connotations for Mark Burnett. Like a good host, Probst had nothing but praise for the producers' controversial brainchild, calling the exercise in segregation a valuable social experiment, rather than a stunt to dig up some controversy--and raise ratings. "The...
