A Plantation man who was mowing his lawn this morning accidentally cut off his hand in the process, officials said.
The man, who lives behind the Jacaranda Golf Club in the 9600 block of Conch Shell Manor, was taken to Broward General Medical Center on trauma alert, said Joel Gordon, spokesman for the Plantation Fire Department.
More details will emerge as the investigation continues.
There was a guy that cut off some fingers by using a mower to trim a hedge...
My father once broke two fingers while trying to clean the snowblower attachment to his lawn tractor. He forgot that the blower attachment was still engaged. Ouch!
By trying to remove grass clumps from the discharge opening while the mower is running maybe?
It depends on the volume of beer involved.
Most probable way was he was trying to remove an object (stick, rock) that jammed the blades.
atomicpossum, did you ever go possum kicking when young? maybe you still do...when I was a teen we lived in the VERY backwoods. Our big fun was getting drunk and chasing possums though a peanut field.
Nope, not a Darwin award. By def, a Darwin award is for ending the ability to reproduce. Now, if he used his hand to reproduce (I dont want to go there), I'd agree.
What details could remain to be discovered? Did they not find the hand, or something?

Fingers yes, a whole hand is possible, but both hands...i dunno. I like the removing something that jammed the blade idea someone else posted. Maybe he tried to start it up like they used to start up the old prop planes. ;)
No, but I did play frog-ball under the neighborhood street lights when young. You'd be surprised how many innings you get out of one toad. ...tough little buggers.
Possum kicking? Is that for distance or accuracy?
Bah, reading comprehension is my friend.
Wonder where i got the idea he lost both hands.
He needs a lawyer...right now...doctor later
"street lights"...I have lived in the BigCity for many years now and tend to forget about country life. Everytime I visit family I am shocked at how dark it is in the country. Was driving to my brothers house a few months ago and had to drive about 50 miles via old country roads with not street lights. I was amazed at how completely dark it gets.
The police may believe that the case is similar to one near here. A man had his toes cut off in what he said was a mowing accident. It later turned out that his "accident" was actually a final request for payment from his recreational pharmaceutical retailer.
And all this time I thought that the "don't touch blade while motor is running" label was obvious and unnecesary.
Why the hell was this guy cutting his own lawn?
Illegals are there for that.
I read it the same way... lost both hands?!? Until I read your post.
If you get a piece of wire wrapped around the blade, or a piece of sturdy plastic, it can acquire quite a bit of tension without it being noticeable.
When you try to take it off, the blade can start spinning violently.
I know an experienced mechanic who lost his thumb this way.
Maybe laying down on the job?
