Robert Adolph Boehm, in accordance with his lifelong dedication to his own personal brand of decorum, muttered his last unintelligible and likely unnecessary curse on October 6, 2024, shortly before tripping backward over "some stupid mother****ing thing" and hitting his head on the floor. Robert was born in Winters, TX, to the late Walter Boehm and Betty Smith on May 6, 1950, after which God immediately and thankfully broke the mold and attempted to cover up the evidence. Raised Catholic, Robert managed to get his wife Dianne pregnant (three times) fast enough to just barely miss getting drafted into the...

I was initially perplexed by the recent dust-up over converts in the Catholic commentariat. It seemed an entirely Anglo-American battle, with no parallel in Italy. Yet upon examination, I have found that the opposite is true. It began when Michael Sean Winters, a journalist at the liberal National Catholic Reporter, responded to a televised debate between Austen Ivereigh of Crux and Matthew Schmitz of First Things, with a remark directed at the latter: “I am so tired of converts telling us that the pope is not Catholic.” Schmitz had said nothing to that effect. But Ivereigh quickly echoed Winters’s sentiment,...

A couple weeks ago (HERE) the Wile E. Coyote of the catholic Left, Michael Sean Winters of the Fishwrap sniggered with fellow lib Massimo “Beans” Faggioli about converts. To quote Winters: I am so tired of converts telling us that the pope is not Catholic. Typical. Converts don’t have the right to say anything because they’re converts. Now Austen Ivereigh has a piece at CRUX (why the KCs pay for this rubbish is beyond me) against converts who disagree with him. He tries to be soooo nuanced, soooo sophisticated in his condescension.FAIL.

Liberal Catholics are badly rattled by Bishop Thomas Paprocki’s decree that Catholics engaged in same-sex marriage cannot receive the sacraments in his Springfield diocese. So badly rattled, in fact, that… The excitable Michael Sean Winters of the National Catholic Reporter argues that Bishop Paprocki “should be sacked.” In a column that carried a headline referring to the bishop’s decree as “unhinged” (and “unhinged” is a good word to use here, although not for the Paprocki policy) Winters says that the bishop’s stand “warrants the extreme sanction of removal from office proposed in the motu proprio Come una madre amorevole. As...

People across the country are mourning the death of Corporal Nathan Cirillo today. Since his shooting death at the war memorial in Ottawa, there has been an outpouring of sympathy for his family and his comrades in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders reserve force. Barbara Winters shares that feeling. She is now a lawyer but she spent 17 years in the Naval Reserve. And she was one of those who came to the aid of Nathan Cirillo yesterday in the moments after he was attacked. In an emotional interview with As It Happens host Carol Off, she recalls her efforts...

The trailblazing comic improviser Jonathan Winters, who died Thursday at age 87, was a seminal influence on scores of comedians and the person Robin Williams credits as his mentor. Winters' high energy, unpredictable and often surreal comic riffs included an array of characters, reenactments of movie scenes and pointed, quick-morphing sound effects that he often produced on the spot. Take, for example, his 1964 appearance on "The Jack Paar Program." In order to illustrate Winters' genius for creating comedy out of thin air, Paar gave him a simple wooden stick. “Do something with the stick” Paar said, and in what’s...

Jonathan Winters, the cherub-faced comedian whose breakneck improvisations and misfit characters inspired the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, has died. He was 87. The Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes, said Joe Petro III, a longtime family friend. Petro said Winters died surrounded by family and friends. Winters was a pioneer of improvisational standup comedy, with an exceptional gift for mimicry, a grab bag of eccentric personalities and a bottomless reservoir of creative energy. Facial contortions, sound effects, tall tales — all could be used in a matter of seconds to...

A shooting during a morning church service outside St. Louis has left one person dead -- the church's pastor -- and several others wounded, officials said. The Rev. Fred Winters was at the pulpit at the First Baptist Church in Maryville, Ill., at 8:15 a.m. local time today when a man wearing dark clothing approached the pulpit and fired four shots, the first of which hit the pastor's Bible, Illinois State Police Director Larry Trent said at a news conference late today. One of the shots from the gunman's .45 caliber pistol hit Winters in the chest, killing him, before...

Three key officials of the Diocese of Phoenix, all confidants of Bishop Thomas J. O'Brien, will be replaced July 1, Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted announced Tuesday. The departure of Monsignors Dale Fushek and Richard Moyer, and chancellor Sister Mary Ann Winters marks an almost complete change of administration from O'Brien's time as bishop. . . . O'Brien resigned in June after his arrest in connection with a hit-and-run accident. "I wanted to choose priests who are well known for their pastoral zeal, their prudential judgment, their sound doctrine, their ability to work collaboratively with a variety of persons, and their...

Rep. Hooley should brace for a tough race Both Sen. Jackie Winters and Jim Zupacncic are formidable foes. April 17, 2004 Voters in the 5th Congressional District can choose between the strongest Republican candidates in years. Either state Sen. Jackie Winters of Salem or lawyer Jim Zupancic of Lake Oswego would be a formidable opponent to Democratic Rep. Darlene Hooley. Winters’ and Zupancic’s views are alike in many ways. Both support President Bush’s tax cut, his No Child Left Behind act and his approach to thinning public forests. Each vows to cut government waste and paints the other as more...

From the desk of Perry A. Atkinson Oregon Republican Party Chairman 1999-2003 Monday, April 12, 2004 Dear Fellow Republican, It is rare that I get involved in a Republican Primary but when I learned that Senator Jackie Winters’ opponent in the Fifth Congressional District race, downtown Portland Lawyer Jim Zupancic, had contributed money to Democrat Attorney General Hardy Meyers, it bothered me deeply. This is the same Hardy Meyers that recently refused to enforce the state law banning gay marriage in Multnomah County. While I was trying to lead the Party, at a time when then candidate George W. Bush...

Salem state Sen. Jackie Winters formally entered the race to unseat Democratic Congresswoman Darlene Hooley on Wednesday.

Winters had been contemplating the race for several months but wanted to wait until her mind cleared after the 2003 legislative session ended. Her decision was clinched, she said, when she won the support from one wavering family member.

Salem Republican Jackie Winters might try to unseat local Congresswoman Darlene Hooley with a nudge from the top gun in her party — George W. Bush.

“I’ve had conversations with the president on a couple of occasions,” said Winters, serving in her first state Senate term. “I’ve said that I would look at it, but I won’t do anything until after the session.”
