This is a story about how a lemonade stand created from tragedy had a sweet ending. After his father died of colon cancer, a 6-year-old in Colorado opened a lemonade stand to raise money to take his mom on a date and to help fund research. “My dad and I came up with the idea of a lemonade stand to take my mom on a date because I didn’t have enough money and I wanted to pay, so I did it,” Brady Campbell told Fox31 in Denver. He decided to charge 25 cents or “best offer.” A police officer noticed...

Some of Hollywood's biggest young stars have been involved in sex scandals, racy photos and overall questionable behavior. From Miley Cyrus, to Vanessa Hudgens to Rihanna, it often seems as though role models for young people are sending out signals to grow up very fast. But all hope is not lost for parents and young people looking for more wholesome role models. Country singer Taylor Swift, who just finished a sold-out run in the New York area, followed by an astounding four-night sell-out at the Los Angeles Staples Center for her “Speak Now” tour, has had to add more concert...

Dobkin discussion: After so many years of making holiday season comedies you'd think Hollywood's exhausted the storytelling possibilities involving Santa Claus, but think again.
  • Home schoolers partake of teen tradition: The prom

A nagging shower pelted the white decks of the Stone Mountain riverboat as waiters fussed over silver-plated buffet trays and temperamental photographers scouted for a dry, moonlit corner to record prom memories. Lots of proms are held on the riverboat Henry W. Grady, but never before had it hosted one like Saturday night's. The 114 students gathered for this particular prom, that traditional rite of high school passage, weren't from any local high school. They were home schoolers.

I am grateful to Andrew Sullivan for calling to my attention a blog entry in defense of South Park, from a site titled "Sorry Baby, But Nobody Rules The Tom Monster." Blogger Tom Meyer rebuts Brent Bozzell (whom I generally admire) for his somewhat unfair attack on South Park. I stipulate that SP is crude and vulgar, as would anyone anchored in reality. But SP also stands up for some very positive values, in a way that is both attractive and accessible to people in college, or a few years after it or before it. The phrase "South Park Republicans"...

The following is abridged from a speech delivered at a Hillsdale College seminar in Naples, Florida, on March 20, 2002. Let us take a few minutes to think about a 12-year-old American boy living in the early twenty-first century. Now, there are a number of things to say about this boy. Chances are, for instance, that absent the requisite amount of parental pressure, he is likely to be a bit of a slob: his room piled with trash, his hands dirty, his socks sliding down into untied shoes. Chances are, too, that as yet he has no definite idea as...

This coming Sunday night on PAX T.V. there is a repeat of a program that was being produced prior to Sept. 11, 2001, as an honor to U.S. servicemen and women.During filming, the terrorist attacks occurred and the producers incorporated into the program many men and women firefighters and police who were at the WTC. It is really good and worth watching, even taping. It is a two-hour program, starting at 8p.m. (at least on the East Coast).
