"Don’t you live for that moment right there?" That was former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason’s take on the final scene of Super Bowl XLIV: The Most Valuable Player, Saints quarterback Drew Brees, was holding his young son in his arms while his wife, young Baylan’s mother, looked on with a face full of joy — a loving family sharing a momentous personal, cultural, and historic moment. It’s an image America needed. "Given that about one in four American boys are living apart from their dads at any one point in time, it is great to see a Super Bowl champion...

[M]ove over, Endymion. New Orleans has a new superkrewe. Make that a Super krewe. Deliriously welcoming back the Super Bowl champions who brought home the hardware after 43 years, adoring Saints fans packed in 15 deep along the streets of the Central Business District on Tuesday, braving temperatures cold enough that New Orleans officials enacted the city's freeze plan. But who really cared? As spectator Gerard Braud put it: "We have endured the American nightmare. It's our time to live the American dream." As the parade got set to roll, the Marine Corps Reserve band got the crowd primed with...

There were 42 years worth of demons, 42 years of mostly struggles, 42 years of waiting until next year. Not anymore. This, the 43rd year of the New Orleans Saints, will be different. In one swing of Garrett Hartley's right leg Sunday night, the Saints kicked away their demons, booted out their past struggles and ended the wait. The Saints are going to Super Bowl XLIV. Hartley's 40-yard winning field goal in overtime of the Saints' thrilling 31-28 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC championship game guaranteed them a spot. "I just knew when it came off my...

A breath of fresh air is hard to come by in the Special Victims Unit. Mariska Hargitay is on the mend after suffering a pneumothorax—aka a partially collapsed lung—but will not miss out on any episodes of Law & Order: SVU this season, according to the Emmy-winning actress' rep. It's unclear if some sort of trauma prompted the injury or if Hargitay suffered a spontaneous pneumothorax, which can occur if more air pressure builds up in a person's chest cavity than is present in the lungs. Hargitay's rep said, however, that the 44-year-old wife and mom was not injured on...

The Free Republic keyword feature serves a valuable purpose, it alerts posters to topics that they are interested in and supplements those topics which aren't already listed as available topics.

1. Please do not add words like "and" and "the" to the keywords. And PLEASE do not add every word from your title to the keywords, that's just plain annoying.

Should I be worried? Freedom of thought is the basis of a lot of our existing constitutional rights in the US, as in many countries. With the burgeoning of neurosciences and the neurotechnologies they give rise to, we can see great opportunities but also great perils, because the law on freedom of thought is so underdeveloped. It is the most important of all legal freedoms, but the least articulated. Here at the Center for Cognitive Liberty and Ethics (CCLE) in Davis, California, we try to provide legal theory and principles to guide courts, policy makers and civil liberty experts. What...
