He also wants to restrict mail-in voting and allow only paper ballots. The Constitution doesn’t give the president explicit authority over election law.
President Trump said late Saturday that he would issue an executive order to require voter identification for all U.S. elections, a continuation of his efforts to overhaul the nation’s election laws, which he has long attacked and falsely blamed for his 2020 election loss.
In a post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump said, “Voter I.D. Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS! I Will Be Doing An Executive Order To That End!!!” He did not provide further details about the order.
He also reiterated his intention to restrict mail-in voting except for those who are very ill or serving far away in the military, as well as his opposition to voting machines.
The announcement signals Mr. Trump’s latest effort to influence election laws using an executive order, something that he has dubious authority to do. The Constitution gives the president no explicit authority to regulate elections. Rather, it gives states the power to decide the rules of elections, oversee voting and try to prevent fraud. It gives Congress the ability to override state laws on voting. Any executive order from the president regarding elections is likely to see immediate legal challenges.
Mr. Trump and his allies have started a wide-ranging effort to gain any advance they can ahead of midterm elections, which are set for November 2026.
Earlier this month, Mr. Trump said that a team of lawyers were preparing an executive order to end all mail-in ballots and wrote on social media that the executive...

It’s hysterical when worthless lefties worry about what is and isn’t in the constitution.
It this true?
Start with that the source is The New York Times. Presumptively false.
Need confirmation from a reliable source.
This looks like Operation Mockingbird's tell.
he Constitution doesn’t give the president explicit authority over election law
~~~
“explicit”
That word attracted my attention.
That sounds like legal weasel-speak for otherwise saying that the constitution doesn’t directly restrict it.
I will admit, I’ve always been against governing (or substituting for legislating) by executive fiat.
However, the democrats love to do it, so the precedent is more than set. Make them sue against ever executive order. The activist judges might win, but it’s still a good-for-goose-good-for-gander situation.
just one more thing PDJT is trying to accomplish on his own when the truth is that many of the things really should be done by Congress
I THINK that PDJT may be able to require ID to insure the integrity of the vote for for federal elections.
But maybe not for elections for state offices?
Just guessing
Doing it wayyyy before the 2026 elections means there is plenty of time to get it all worked out in the courts.
If you wait until summer of 2026 to do something like this, they will get their injunctions and stays in place in order to keep it from taking effect in November.
“””President Trump said late Saturday that he would issue an executive order to require voter identification for all U.S. elections””””
Voter ID has major support (90%+) from Republican voters and maybe 50/50 support from Independent Voters. In other words it is an 80/20 issue.
Trump is doing the typical Trump tango where he forces the Democrats to defend No Voter ID while 80% of the voters want Voter ID.
Trump is flooding the zone, just like they flooded him with lawfare.
He’s got them playing wack-a-mole so fast their heads are spinning.
Blue states wanting to retain mail in voting will face the prospect of significant costs to run a complicated election, partly for fed offices and partly for state offices. In addition the burdens to local clerks brings them to the breaking point of unfunded mandates
It is a crime that we need a friggin I.D. for everything else we do in life but it isn’t important enough to make meatballs prove who the hell they are before we allow them to vote? Regardless of what the Party of Death, Destruction and Dementia says, elections are kind of important. Having an I.D. to vote is more important than needing a driver’s license to drive.
At most mail in ballots should be restricted to the elderly and disabled. And even then it should be strictly controlled.
This will be stopped, and rightly so, by a court. It is the job of Congress that needs to get off its collective rear-end and pass the requisite legislation.
understood, so maybe some states will reinstitute voter ID for both fed AND state offices
hopefully so
indeed
PDJT has learned how seriously dangerous the far left is
yes, there is indeed time to work through some of these executive mandates
I sure hope PDJT has enough good lawyers to handle things well
The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing [sic] Senators.
So sad as I am to point this out, President Trump is exceeding his authority by attempting to specify the manner of holding elections unless there is a law passed by Congress that delegates this authority to presidents.
Congress has to get involved. Between the filibuster and GOP squishes it will be a tough road.
I’d say allow early voting on the Saturday just before the election. One day only. Lighten up the bottleneck on Tuesday.
the GOP squishes or turncoats ARE the problem, the reason why PDJT pretty much realizes he has to go it alone
alas.
Everyone should have to prove Citizenship when they register. And that has nothing to do with States regulating their elections...dates, time & place.
