40 years ago, you answered the call of your country with heads held high. Young and full of American promise you were, off to fight against tyranny in a far off land for someone you'd never met. You endured the hell that is War, fighting with honor and victory even as your friends fell by your side. You did it for those fallen brothers, for the South Vietnamese who could not fight, most of all for your children so they wouldn't have to fight in their time. You came home to a country who's people were torn by that war,...

George Bush's post-September 11 strategy has been endorsed by the voters of the United States, writes Tony Parkinson. Vindication is too strong a word for it. But what nobody can deny is that George Bush appears on the brink of an epic political victory. If, as seemed likely last night, Bush is returned to the White House for a second term, he will have won the support of a majority of American voters to follow through on the agenda he framed in the rubble of September 11. Incumbent presidents have run for re-election eight times previously since World War II,...

When I was a lad, nearly everyone was the establishment. There were a few voices of dissent, of conscience, of leftist agitation, of moral indignation, and everyone else was happy with the way things were. To be an outsider was to be a subversive, to invite opprobrium and suspicion not merely from the authorities but from "decent" society too. Nowadays, as could be observed in relation to the visit of George W. Bush, everyone's a rebel. Bishops, trade unionists, singer-songwriters, even lawyers take turns manning the barricades of revolution. Twenty years ago I participated in the protest during the visit...

February 20, 2004 -- Remember "Missing," the 1982 movie by left-wing director Costa-Gavras, which starred Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek? The hit film accused the U.S. government of complicity in the disappearance and murder of a young New Yorker in the days following the 1973 military coup that toppled Chile's Marxist president, Salvador Allende, from power.

January 31, 2004, 1:34 p.m. Blair and Bush Squeak Through A trying week. Britons and Americans wept copiously in mid-week. It appeared almost as if there had been collusion to save the reputations of Tony Blair and George Bush. Pressure has been building for months, to the effect that the British and American governments knew all along, during the heavy debates in the fall of 2002 and winter of 2003, that Saddam Hussein had no inventory of weapons that might conceivably be held to be of mass destruction. Everyone was waiting for confirmation by two august sources. The first is...

In light of weapons inspector David Kay's recent statements, it is mystifying to me that President Bush and Republicans aren't claiming vindication and challenging Democrats for exploiting the issue. Some observations about this:1. Kay did say we didn't discover major stockpiles of recently developed WMD in Iraq, but almost everything else he said supports the president's position, exposing his opponents as wrong and reckless. Kay said or implied that: A. "The intelligence community owes the president (an apology) rather than the president owing (one to) the American people." B. The administration did not pressure the intelligence agencies to overstate the...

Public release date: 24-Nov-2003 Contact: Michael Bernstein m_bernstein@acs.org 202-872-6042 American Chemical Society Vindication for Vinland map: New study supports authenticity Recent conclusions that the storied Vinland Map is merely a clever forgery are based on a flawed understanding of the evidence, according to a scientist at the Smithsonian Institution. Results from last year's study debunking the map's authenticity can also be construed to boost the validity of its medieval origins, the scientist claims. The report will appear in the Dec. 1 edition of Analytical Chemistry, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. The Vinland...

A lot happened in Iraq and in the 2004 Democratic Presidental Nomination battle this weekend, but it is all going to be politically overshadowed by the economic growth numbers due Thursday. When the Gross Domestic Product for the July September quarter is announced Thursday, it is expected to show that the economy barreled forward at a rate of 6 or perhaps even 7%--a performance unmatched since the glory days of the 1990's internet economic boom..Although growth is likely to slow somewhat between now and the end of this year, most analysts think it will be strong enough to ensure a second...

They were wrong14apr03 WHEN protesters marched to stop this war of liberation, Saddam Hussein was filmed gloating to his generals. "They support you," he crowed. So where are you today, you whom Saddam reckoned among his friends? Where are you who waved anti-war banners that pouted: "Not In Our Name"? Did you see the Iraqi people kiss and hug the allied soldiers -- our soldiers -- who gave them their freedom after decades of terror? Now say it again, if you dare: Not In Our Name. Did you see our soldiers break open Saddam's torture centres and his jails for...

President Bush and Vice President Cheney declared themselves vindicated today as Baghdad fell to U.S. forces just 10 days after the administration suffered a barrage of second-guessing about its war plan. "They got it down!" Bush said this morning as he caught television coverage of a toppled statue of Saddam Hussein, according to an aide. White House press secretary Ari Fleischer called the scenes of joyful Iraqi defiance of Saddam Hussein's fallen regime "a powerful testament to mankind's desire to live free." "That includes, of course, the Iraqi people, like the president always said it would," Fleischer said.
