A counterintelligence directorate created by former Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin and made famous by the James Bond novels of author and former British spy Ian Fleming has reportedly made a return to Russia. SMERSH is a portmanteau of the Russian for "death to spies," or "smert shpionam." It was announced in 1943 as a move to target Nazi spy rings, traitors and foreign agents during the World War II, before it was disbanded in 1946. Fleming portrayed the group as cold-blooded foes of James Bond. One of his characters was Rosa Klebb—an assassin handy with a flick-knife shoe, who...

If the name Kychelle Del Rosario rings a bell, congratulations on a truly excellent memory for egregious academic-medical wokeness. For the rest of us, a refresher course may be in order. On March 29, 2022, Del Rosario, a fourth-year medical student at Wake Forest, tweeted about her interaction with a patient during what should have been a routine blood draw. According to the med student’s own account, the patient in question noticed Del Rosario’s “She/Her” pronoun pin, laughed, and expressed consternation that any such identifier should be necessary. In response, Del Rosario intentionally “missed [the patient’s] vein so he had...

Republicans gathered at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday to cheer on their conservative heroes. But they also had an opportunity to shame GOP politicians they deemed not pro-Trump enough, casting ballots for the “phoniest ‘conservative’ lawmaker.” Next to a stuffed donkey with a fake elephant’s snout, attendees voted for the likes of former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and former Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who led the ballot count as of Thursday afternoon. One prominent GOP Trump critic wasn’t an option, though—because everybody already knew he’d win in a landslide.

It’s safe to say that the left is in full-blown panic mode over the Supreme Court vacancy and have already begun viciously targeting possible Trump pick and U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Amy Coney Barrett over her conservative values, her Catholic faith, and, most of all, her gender. A Tuesday afternoon CNN Newsroom segment illustrated that with guest and Daily Beast contributing editor Erin Gloria Ryan asserting that, if President Trump selects a woman, they “should be known as the Aunt Lydia of the Supreme Court†in reference to a villain from liberal dystopian show The Handmaid’s Tale. In addition,...

*snip* The little-known Haiti Development Fund, an LLC incorporated in Delaware in August 2010, was created by the Clinton Foundation with an initial endowment of $20 million from shady Canadian mining mogul Frank Giustra and Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim. The Fund was supposed to supply desperately needed seed money to Haitian entrepreneurs after an earthquake devastated the country in January 2010. *snip* “This cries out for an audit or an investigation,” said Ken Boehm, chairman of the National Legal and Policy Center a Virginia-based watchdog group. “Its director was in bankruptcy and there’s almost nothing in the public record showing...

Bill Maher wants Hillary Clinton to become more like the “super villain” that the GOP says she is. The “Real Time with Bill Maher” host said Friday that the Democratic presidential nominee should take advantage of the Republican Party’s “evil cartoon” portrayal of her. “Since half the country will believe an evil cartoon version of Hillary Clinton, no matter what she says or does, she has to embrace it,” the comedian said. Maher claimed that “sweet grandma Hillary” would have done fine in 2008. But in 2016, and with the rise of reality TV personality Donald Trump as the GOP’s...

“Every Cop Is a Criminal/And All the Sinners Saints” Five police officers are murdered in Dallas by a #BlackLivesMatter-type activist-turned-sniper, and President Obama says blankly, “It is very hard to untangle the motives of this shooter.” Actually, it’s not hard at all: Micah Johnson’s anti-cop, anti-white motivation was quite evident — and his murderous rationale has been bolstered by, even cheered on by, his sister’s Facebook posts.

In the early 1990s, the biggest names in the mortgage industry hatched a plan for a new electronic clearinghouse that would transform the home loan business - and unlock billions of dollars of new investments and profits. At the time, mortgage documents were moved almost exclusively by hand and mail, a throwback to an era in which people kept stock certificates, too. That made it hard for banks to buy and sell packages of home loans to investors. By contrast, a central electronic clearinghouse would allow the companies to transfer thousands of mortgages instantaneously, greasing the wheels of a system...

Health care reform might be President Barack Obama’s signature domestic policy, but not if you ask Republicans running for the House this year. According to them, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is the driving force behind the enterprise, assisted by an army of subservient lieutenants. In district after district, GOP candidates have unleashed a barrage of press releases, emails, and ads criticizing the California congresswoman for her efforts and explicitly tying their Democratic opponents to her, often while avoiding mention of the president’s role altogether. While Obama’s work to advance health care legislation is also a target in some contests, it...
