Studies have shown a dog’s brain is similar to that of a human’s, and in the 1980s, Dr. Nicholas Dodman of the School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University discovered that dogs can experience the chemical and hormonal changes that bring about depression and anxiety in humans. Unfortunately, dogs can’t talk or communicate their inner feelings with their humans, so dog owners should be on the lookout for signs their four-legged friend is suffering from depression. How to tell if your dog is depressed Many symptoms of canine depression could also be linked to chronic pain and poor health, so...

Add routine pet checkups to the list of things that will have to wait until the COVID-19 pandemic subsides. On Monday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order prohibiting in-person veterinary services that aren’t essential and encouraging a shift towards telemedicine through the duration of the coronavirus pandemic. The order takes effect 5 p.m. March 31. The prohibition doesn’t apply to lifesaving procedures, treating serious pain, necessary euthanizations or necessary treatment of infectious diseases that can be transmitted between animals and human beings. A licensed veterinarian would make the call on whether a service is essential. The Centers for Disease...

A frog hit by a lawn mower in Mount Isa owes its life to animal lovers who worked to fly it across Queensland for life-saving treatment at a special Cairns frog hospital. The common green frog was run over in April by a woman who was "very distraught", FrogSafe president Deborah Pergolotti told 9NEWS. The frog suffered a "deep gash" to his back and the woman called a relative for help, who in turn contacted FrogSafe's Cairns Frog Hospital. The group then coordinated a rescue effort, enlisting the help of a regional airline and an animal transport company to fly...

When she discovered she was pregnant, the 22-year-old aspiring veterinarian started calling abortion clinics in her home state of Oklahoma. It was a short list – there are only two, and neither could get her an appointment quickly. Unemployed, no car, and still living with her parents, Pearl thought about trying Texas, but knew the state had also recently tightened restrictions on clinics. ...

Critics want the board to pull her veterinary license.

AUSTIN — A hearing for Lou Tierce, whose veterinary license was suspended in the wake of his arrest on animal cruelty charges, is under way with dozens of his supporters in the audience. Tierce’s attorney, Donald Ferrill of Fort Worth, also a licensed veterinarian, spoke first, saying there have been tales of a “vampire running a shop of horrors” but insisted that was not the case. Tierce’s clinic in west Fort Worth had been raided on April 29 after a woman filed a complaint with the state, saying a dog she took in to be euthanized was being kept alive...

An Asiatic black bear at a Laos sanctuary is cured of hydrocephalus. Free the Bears called on Pizzi, a South African veterinary surgeon who works in Scotland at the Edinburgh Zoo and also at a national wildlife rescue center. Six weeks after the operation, Champa is markedly more active and more social with other bears, and she is gaining weight. She will always have some brain damage, since the accumulated fluid does cause permanent harm. And she will remain in captivity. But her relief is obvious. "Operating on one bear won't save bears from extinction, and making life better for...

Vet Wants to Legalize Pot for Dogs Polls show the majority of Americans support legalizing marijuana, but should dogs have it too? It sounds crackpot, but Veterinarian Doug Kramer thinks that the THC in marijuana could help dogs and other pets with painful conditions that don't respond to other treatments. VICE chatted with Kramer about his pot-for-pets campaign. "A client first brought it to my attention," Kramer told VICE. "She had a pet that was not responding well to any of the pain medications or the steroids that we were giving it, and she wanted to talk about getting medical...

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A local vet is under scrutiny once again after a new complaint has been filed. Kelley Floyd filed a complaint against Lubbock mobile veterinarian Dr. Penny Kelso due to her treatment of a Labrador retriever named Spooky. "Someone else might call her and lose a beloved pet," Floyd said. "That's what we're trying to prevent." Kelso has been reprimanded by the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners five times. In 2008, Kelso had her license suspended for two years. This most recent case involved a house call that Dr. Kelso made to Patricia Mott's dog, Spooky....

We have a fenced in yard and I let my dog out. Minutes later I heard barking like crazy and my dog was acting weird. I went out with a flashlight and he had a cat on it's back and the cat had scratched my dog below both eyes and he was bleeding, so there was definitely some fighting going on. My husband took the dog in and cleaned up his wounds and I went to check on the cat. We've never seen this cat in the neighborhood before and it's a huge cat. At first it just hissed at...

Title from Drudge to fit word requirement. A puppy euthanized by veterinarians has risen from the "dead." The black-and-white pooch was one of five young dogs "put to sleep" Saturday at a shelter in Sulphur, Okla., News 9 in Oklahoma City reported. Each dog was checked and confirmed to be dead, then the 3-month-old and his four siblings were placed in a trash bin. On Sunday morning, an animal control officer looked into the bin and discovered that the one pup somehow survived. "He was just as healthy as could be," Scott Prall told News 9. The puppies were selected...
