Over-Vaccination in Pets
Michael Dym, VMD ^

Certain vaccinations are important for pets to protect them from several fatal diseases. However, while this process is important, pet owners should be careful to make sure they are not over-vaccinating their animal companions because this can lead to health issues.

Over-vaccination in pets is when a pet is inoculated with the same vaccines multiple times. When this happens, it can result in adverse effects on your pet's health. This can be dangerous to some animals because they are vaccinated too frequently for their bodies to handle. Studies show that over-vaccination can cause hypersensitivity reactions and autoimmune diseases.

Over-vaccination is especially dangerous for younger animals because their immune systems are still developing. Their bodies cannot handle vaccines at the same rate as adult animals. When puppies and kittens are repeatedly inoculated, it can negatively affect their health. When animals are given vaccinations they are too young to receive, it also increases the likelihood of an adverse reaction.

Diseases Associated with Over-Vaccination in Pets

Several diseases can develop as a result of over-vaccination. Some pets have experienced neurological conditions, immune deficiencies, and more after being vaccinated too many times. A few of these diseases include:

Uterine infections
Death of tissues
Degeneration (atrophy) of lymphoid tissue
Autoimmune hemolytic anemia
Lameness or stilted gait due to inflammation, muscle disorders, and bone loss in the limbs
Increased allergies in the ears and eyes
Hormonal issues

The Titer Test

Veterinarians can perform a titer test to see if your pet has immunity against parvovirus, distemper, and rabies. This is the only way to tell if your dog or cat needs to be vaccinated again.

Haven’t given our pets any shots in over 10 years. They always got titer tests and shocker, they have an immunity built up for all “diseases”.

When we acquired our Lhasa Apso pup from a breeder, she already had received whatever vaccines breeders normally give to puppies. We never gave her any table scraps, she only ate dry dog food with lamb as first ingredient. I had read somewhere that mouth germs are harmful to dog’s heart & kidneys. So I began a ritual of brushing her teeth every day after her main meal. Result was she never got sick, we never had to take her to a vet, received no more vaccines, and she lived a healthy energetic life of 16+ years.

My niece is a vet and she said that since my cat never goes outside, it doesn’t need any vaccination updates. All they do is make the cat miserable for a couple of days.

So I began a ritual of brushing her teeth every day after her main meal.

That is the smartest thing you could possibly do. At least three times a week. And if they are used to it, no harm in daily.
One of the most important healthcare things you can do.

My last 2 dogs lasted 17 years and 12 years. Neither ever went to a vet except when I picked em up from a shelter to get fixed. Neither dog ever got a rabies shot (only one is ever needed if you do give your pet one) and neither got heart worm medication. Neither dog ever left our property..it’s called training and neither was ever leashed and I was surrounded by woods. They were the kind that laid by your feet, wanted the occasional petting and we’re always loyal. They stayed on the floor or in their beds never on furniture or my bed. They laid beside it not on it.

Long healthy life’s and definitely missed.

People care more about their pets than their kids.

It reminds me of people who won’t use red colored hummingbird food and yet feed their kids Fruit Loops for breakfast and put blue raspberry drink in their kid’s bottles.

They feed their pets organ pet food and their kids highly processed junk food.

We get our dog’s shots every 2-3 years. She never goes outside except to walk down the street or to to the bathroom. Never comes into contact with other dogs or cats.

My vet has changed and constantly hounds me about vaccinations for my dog. Useless and repetitive vaccines. Recently, I tried to order a tick preventative on the pharmacy website they use (read:kickbacks) and they refused it , after discussing it, because they wanted me to come in for a wellness visit and heartworm test and more vaccines that I told them I was not doing (covid, lyme ).
Now shopping for a new vet.

Additionally, we feed them raw proteins and organic vegetables. I’m positive that has a lot to do with it.

Some shelters around here won’t let you adopt unless any previous or current pets have visited the vet at least once every two years and have received all required vaccinations. We’ve always had indoor cats and saw no need to constantly give the vet money for innoculation to diseases they’ll never encounter. If they go for a sick visit they are required to get rabies tag. One vet said even if they’re indoors if a rabid animal gets in, for instance he knew of a bat flying into someone’s house and both she and her cat ended up with rabies, so it’s perfect but there is a slight chance and it’s the law.

Dogs are so easy to train. After brushing teeth (without any toothpaste) I would give her a small treat, sometimes just a few pieces of dry dog food. She never fought me propping open her mouth with left hand and a quick brushing with my right hand.

Don't get me started on the uselessness of the local Humane Society or all the local rescue cat agencies......And especially the useless TNR programs they claim to promote.......

last ping. the principle at work here doesn’t just have to do with “over-vaccination” but also over-medication, and overly high dosages.
