When Barbara Johns was just 16 years old, she led a walkout at her high school to protest poor and unequal school conditions. The moment is one that many historians believe helped launch the desegregation movement in the US. Now, Johns -- who died in 1991 -- will be memorialized at the US Capitol, replacing Virginia's statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Governor Northam announced that Virginia’s statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee was removed from the U.S. Capitol overnight. A representative from the governor’s office was present for the removal along with United States Senator Tim Kaine and Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton. For 111 years, the Confederate statue has stood along with America’s first president George Washington as Virginia’s contributions. The two statues were added in 1909, which was 44 years after the Confederacy rebelled against the United States and was defeated.

State Sen. Amanda Chase (R), a Republican candidate for governor in Virginia, called on President Trump to declare martial law to keep Joe Biden from being sworn in as the next president. Writing in a Facebook post early in the morning on Tuesday, Chase said Biden is “not my president and never will be,” while linking to a New York Times story detailing how the Electoral College had certified Biden’s election victory. She echoed Trump’s unsubstantiated claim that Biden had “cheated to win” and said she and many other Americans will “never accept these results.” “Fair elections we can accept...

"Social justice consultants" and proponents of critical race theory, which teaches children to judge each other based on their skin color, just locked down a major contract in one of Virginia's largest school districts. "Loudoun County Public Schools has entered into a new agreement that pays more than $50,000 to a California business that trains staff members to address bias and oppression while fostering an atmosphere of social justice," West NOVA News reports. "The district has announced it is committed to eradicating what it describes as “systemic racism” and is investing time and money in combatting the problem despite mixed...

One arm of Iran’s state-owned media, PressTV, is reporting the council’s latest foray into foreign policy through an interview with David Swanson, the Charlottesville peace activist who helped push the resolution.

When it comes to the liberal media's criticism of the Trump team's challenges to the election, this is quite possibly the most absurd argument yet! On CNN's New Day Friday morning, co-host John Berman claimed that Republican congressmen who have signed the amicus brief in the Texas lawsuit, and who represent districts in states whose results the suit is challenging, "have to resign or . . . not take the oath of office in January."Get the rest of the story and view the video here.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced new coronavirus restrictions Thursday and urged people of faith to stay out of their churches during the Christmas season. “This year, we need to think about what is truly the most important thing. Is it the worship or the building?” Northam said at a press conference. “For me, God is wherever you are. You don’t have to sit in the church pew for God to hear your prayers.” He urged faith leaders to “lead the way” and “set an example” for their communities.

Virginia will be under a nightly curfew from midnight until 5 a.m., and social gatherings will be limited to 10 people under new public restrictions meant to stem the surge of COVID-19 expected to go into effect Monday. Gov. Ralph Northam announced the new restrictions Thursday afternoon, citing an untamed spike of COVID-19 cases in the state in the middle of the busy holiday season.

WASHINGTON--An executive from a company that manages a large portion of the Internet's infrastructure on Thursday slammed federal wiretapping rules expected to take effect next spring. Paul Kouroupas, vice president of regulatory affairs for Global Crossing, strongly criticized the Federal Communications Commission's broadening of a 1994 law--originally intended to cover telephone providers--as disproportionately costly, complex, and riddled with privacy concerns. His company is one of the world's largest Internet backbone providers. "Our customers are large Fortune 500 companies--not too many of those companies are conducting drug deals or terrorist activities out of Merrill Lynch's offices or using their phones in...

Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) announced Wednesday he will jump into the race for his old job, shaking up an already crowded primary field. McAuliffe, who served as Virginia’s chief executive from 2014-2018, officially launched his campaign in the state capital of Richmond, sending out an email to supporters ahead of an event in the state capital of Richmond in which he was expected to make the announcement. Virginia is the only state in the country that bars governors from serving consecutive terms, and a McAuliffe victory would make him just the second Virginian since the Civil War to...

The Virginia Republican Party has decided to hold a nominating convention instead of a primary to select statewide candidates for next year’s election – prompting outgoing GOP Rep. Denver Riggleman to call the state party a “raging dumpster fire.” State party officials during an online meeting Saturday voted in favor of the nomination process. The decision has also prompted state Sen. Amanda Chase, to say she’ll run as an independent. “Over the past decade, I’ve seen too many of our grassroots candidates get cheated by the Republican establishment elite and political consultants who control these Republican Conventions and I refuse...

The Virginia Military Institute removed a statue of Confederate Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson on Monday morning. A small group watched as the bronze figure was hoisted off its pedestal in front of the VMI barracks. The historic figure is being relocated from the campus in Lexington, Va., to its future home at the Virginia Museum of the Civil War and New Market Battlefield State Historical Park. The statue was sculpted by Moses Ezekiel, a member of the class of 1866, and donated to VMI in 1912. And after standing for more than a century, VMI's board voted in favor of...

Campbell County is a First Amendment Sanctuary, according to a resolution the Board of Supervisors (BOS) unanimously passed at a regular meeting on Tuesday. “No Campbell County funds will be used to restrict the First Amendment,” the resolution states. “[No] County funds shall be expended to aid federal or state agencies in the restriction of said rights,” the resolution adds. The document is a version of a no-shutdown resolution similar to one authored by the Virginia Constitutional Conservatives (VCC). However, the Campbell resolution has removed language requiring local authorities to arrest state authorities enforcing Governor Ralph Northam’s executive orders mandating...

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – The head of the gun-rights group that organized a rally that drew 22,000 people to the state Capitol in January said a similar event won’t happen next year, claiming that a “double standard” allowed gun-control advocates to book the majority of time slots for Lobby Day. Philip Van Cleave, the president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, told members of the organization in a message this week that when he tried to apply for the 11 a.m. slot for next year’s Lobby Day, a tradition that gives citizens an opportunity to share issues they find important...

Lobby Day this year will be more eye-popping than last year and you will be warmer to boot!
