Virginia GOP party to hold nominating convention for primary, sparking 'dumpster fire' backlash

The Virginia Republican Party has decided to hold a nominating convention instead of a primary to select statewide candidates for next year’s election – prompting outgoing GOP Rep. Denver Riggleman to call the state party a “raging dumpster fire.”

State party officials during an online meeting Saturday voted in favor of the nomination process.

The decision has also prompted state Sen. Amanda Chase, to say she’ll run as an independent.

“Over the past decade, I’ve seen too many of our grassroots candidates get cheated by the Republican establishment elite and political consultants who control these Republican Conventions and I refuse to be another casualty,” Chase, who has strongly supported President Trump’s efforts to uncover Nov. 3 voter fraud, posted Saturday on Facebook.

The other major GOP candidate to so far declare a run for governor is Kirk Cox, a state delegate and a former Virginia House speaker.

Riggleman, who has criticized fellow Republican for supporting President Trump’s efforts to uncover voter fraud, is also considering a gubernatorial run as an independent, according to The Washington Post.

The first-term congressman lost his seat in June when defeated in a party primary by a more conservative challenger.

Never run as an Independent. “Movements” don’t get behind “independents”. Start an American Patriot Party with the principles established by the Trump movement. Then you might get somewhere.

If the VA GOP refuses to wholeheartedly deal with this outrageous theft of the presidential election, I hope the grass roots will rise up and throw them all out. They have the absolute power to put things right.

Yep. They did this in Utah also, to protect “Prozac” Mike Leavitt’s re-election when he lost the caucuses. Used a convention and did a midnight appointment of hundreds of new “delegates” to put Leavitt over the top. Then called a recess and locked the doors to keep the anti-Leavitt delegates out of the convention hall and fixed the vote. Good ol’ GOPe. Corrupt to the core.

I don’t understand why Chase is opposed to a convention. Normally consevatives do better at a convention than in a primary.

It's even worse than that. Both parties collude to make it hard for independents to succeed. The candidate usually has to spend most of the time they should be campaigning in court just trying to get on the ballot. And all the contributions that should be going towards campaign advertising end up being spent on lawyers instead.

They refused to support Cory Stewart for Senate in 2018, despite him taking the primary.

They caved to the malicious BS coverage by DC media (in particular to the malicious and demented lying of the Washington ComPost).

They lost the elected Commonwealth majority to Northern Virginia Rats despite a decade-long forewarning. They did nothing - zero - to mitigate that.

When I contacted Virginia GOP multiple times (politely) they never responded. But they captured my own contact info and called when it was time for them to beg for money. I contributed (this was before my awakening), but they charged my card double what I offered.

GOP Virginia is full of disgusting weaklings and I'd bail from them in a flash if any alternative existed.

Thanks for the ping.

The VA GOP is still dominated by Bush League Republicans.
They are still ticked off by our taking out Eric Cantor in the primary in 2014.

Yep. Which is proof, in case you needed more, that both parties are 'establishment', and do not have our best interests at heart, nor this country's.

Time for a new party in VA.

Why? Conservatives would much rather have a convention than a primary as it assures that conservatives will be nominated. Conservatives can win statewide races if the Dem cheating is gotten under control.

As a lifelong Virginian and conservative, I will never vote for Kirk Cox. Amanda Chase will get my vote.

It’s being worked on and the state party’s new leadership is being (mostly) cooperative.
