States Move to Require U.S. Flags are Made in U.S.A. Tuesday, July 03, 2007 ROSEMOUNT, Minn. — At American Legion Post 65, visitors can drop off worn U.S. flags knowing they'll be disposed of with the proper respect. On their way out, they can buy a new 3-by-5 flag for $20 or a 4-by-6-footer for $30. Made in America, of course. "That's our flag. It belongs here in the United States; it should be made in the United States," Air Force veteran Bob Racette said while fingering a flag in a corner of the legion hall bar. By year's end,...

As a staff member at the United Methodist Board of Church and Society, I am frequently asked questions that require me to go where "angels fear to tread." Questions about displaying national flags in the church's sanctuary take us into that treacherous terrain. Many United Methodist churches maintain a tradition of placing the United States flag in the sanctuary, by the altar, within the chancel, or at another prominent location on the church grounds. I heard of one case in which the U.S. flag actually covered the altar itself. So we must ask: Is this an appropriate use of the...

BIG, I mean BIG U.S. Flags fly over this very blue County in Maryland. The Flags are big enough to warm your heart and sure to give one encouragement after last fall's elections and the current emboldened atmosphere of the leftest. In my travels for work, I've spotted several Flag locations, but had to wait for a windy day for [Mrs] T to catch some good pics. Unfortunately, on this windy day, 15-20 MPH, the temps were in the low 30s. [Mrs] T's eyes teared up immediately after leaving the warmth of our jeep, but she got the shots. For...

The flag of the United States features thirteen equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white; there is a blue rectangle in the upper hoist-side corner bearing 50 small, white, five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset horizontal rows of six stars (top and bottom) alternating with rows of five stars; the 50 stars represent the 50 states, the 13 stripes represent the 13 original colonies. The flag is known as Old Glory, and no one knows for certain who designed it. Many historians believe that U.S. Congressman, Francis Hopkinson was the original designer, while a few still...

President Bush has ordered U.S. flags lowered in honor of Bob Hope, the legendary entertainer who died Sunday in California of pneumonia. Hope was 100 and had celebrated his birthday just two months earlier. Mr. Bush said in a proclamation Monday that as a mark of respect for Hope's memory, flags will be lowered at the White House, public buildings, and U.S. posts and military installations worldwide on the day of his burial. Flags are also to be flown at half-mast on U.S. ships that day. The burial will be private and held in the coming days. President Bush praised...

Seminary removes flags from cafeteria WILMORE LEADERSHIP WANTS TO AVOID 'SIGN OF CONQUEST' By Greg Kocher CENTRAL KENTUCKY BUREAU WILMORE - Flags are just symbols, but in these days of war they are potent, emotionally charged symbols -- as Asbury Theological Seminary can attest. American flags line downtown Wilmore, where the largest single employer is a state-run veterans' nursing home. But when American flags were put on cafeteria tables at the interdenominational seminary, administrators asked that they be removed because "God's people do not wave flags as the sign of conquest." Later, large flags owned by the seminary representing some...
