Preparing a bowl of chicken soup for a loved one when they’re sick has been a common practice throughout the world for centuries. Today, generations from virtually every culture swear to the benefits of chicken soup. In the U.S., the dish is typically made with noodles, but different cultures prepare the soothing remedy their own way. Chicken soup as a therapy can be traced back to 60 A.D. and Pedanius Dioscorides, an army surgeon who served under the Roman emperor Nero, and whose five-volume medical encyclopedia was consulted by early healers for more than a millennium. But the origins of...

The world's longest railway tunnel is set to open in just over a week - after some 17 years of construction. Measuring 35.4-miles in length, the Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is 7,545 feet below the Gotthard massif, cutting through the Swiss Alps. The tunnel was first conceived in sketch-form in 1947 but construction began 17 years ago. It consists of two single-track tunnels connecting Erstfeld (Uri) with Bodio (Ticino) and passing below Sedrun (Graubünden).

University of Rhode Island campus police will start carrying guns Friday, making it the final public university in the nation to arm its officers. The move to arm police came after a false alarm in 2013, when some students in a lecture hall thought they heard someone say they had a gun, setting off a panic on URI’s bucolic campus in South Kingstown. While campus police arrived at the scene in less than a minute, it took about five minutes for armed police from South Kingstown to arrive. No gun was ever found. […] A student government survey of URI...

THE FACTS Nothing but time can cure the common cold, but a simple cup of salt water might ease the misery this winter.

A sore, itchy throat and respiratory congestion are some of the more common symptoms of a cold, and gargling with salt water seems to help for several reasons. A saline solution can draw excess fluid from inflamed tissues in the throat, making them hurt less, said Dr. Philip T. Hagen, editor in chief of the “Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies,” which is due out in October. Dr. Hagen pointed out that gargling also loosens thick mucus, which can remove irritants like allergens, bacteria and fungi from the throat.

It would seem that discussions of the Second Amendment over the years have missed the mark with the policy wonks and politicians. Not so with some folks across the fruited plain. Todd Fitchette writes in his blog "Across the Back Fence" on the true meaning of the Second Amendment, quoting Senate testimony from a Dr. Suzanna Gratia Hupp on the day she decided to not arm herself for self protection, as was her custom. I think it's more important to note what she told Senators about the Second Amendment. Read the blog AND view the YouTube video for a more...

Green TheologyAustin Ruse, President of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, the only Catholic lobbying group at the United Nations in New York, reports that there are a number of troubling groups circling around the UN. One such group is fairly new and as yet little-reported movement called the United Religious Initiative (URI), now active in 58 countries and 33 states in the U.S. It has been described as "an exclusive, decentralized organization, a spiritual partner of the United Nations." URI positions support population control, environmental extremism, and are radical on sexual matters. A new document signed by URI's...

The number of interfaith groups and networks has risen dramatically over the past 30 years, a new survey shows. The Church of England is playing a leading part in this. The survey, Local Interfaith Activity in the UK, is published by the Interfaith Network for the UK. It reveals not just the growing number of groups and networks but also the increasing range of activities in which they are involved. The survey was promoted last week, along with good-practice guidelines called Partnership for the Common Good, at a conference of European Ministers of the Interior, held in Rome. The Bishop...

MAIN - 08/11/2003 EU ministers discuss Europe's religious faiths Following on the "Congress on The Future of God" held at the Shrine of Fátima in October, EU interior ministers met in Rome last week to map out proposals on how to better integrate Europe's major religions. The meeting came in the wake of an Italian court ruling forbidding a school from displaying a crucifix in its assembly hall because it was considered to be an affront to Muslim pupils. The father of one of the Muslim children had told the court that his son had felt intimidated by the crucifix....
