The lights have finally gone out on this project. In an extraordinary fire sale, the state Power Authority is auctioning off a huge storehouse of unused decorative bridge lights — which were supposed to be part of a $106 million project to brighten up the city’s spans by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, but which never got installed. With a minimum bid of just $25, the lights are only expected to fetch pennies on the dollar — and leave the state out a massive amount of cash for the failed lighting project, officials told The Post of the sale, which was...

More than 70 percent of COVID-19 vaccines are still sitting in freezers in the US — as the country’s disastrous rollout has forced desperate Florida senior citizens to camp out overnight for their shot. Hundreds braved chilly 40-degree temperatures and slept in their cars overnight in Daytona Beach in the mad rush for inoculations, NBC Miami reported.

Last summer, New Jersey ammended the state’s Uniform Unclaimed Property Act, allowing the state to seize (steal) unused money on gift cards. The law was signed by Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.). In November, a judge temporarily struck down the law. How I missed this before, I just don’t know, as is a prime example of actions that would be considered criminal if done by a private party. Gift cards may certainly be convenient for many, but I think they are a pain in the you-know-what. They can cause trouble for both merchants and customers who willingly enter into financial agreements....

First the problem was getting enough vaccine to treat the first flu pandemic in decades. Now the problem is getting rid of millions of doses of the H1N1 vaccine before they go bad. An estimated 71.5 million of the 229 million doses of swine-flu vaccine bought by the U.S. have been put in vials and syringes and will have to be discarded if they aren’t used before their expiration date, the Washington Post reported this morning. That’s after 25 million doses bought by the U.S. are sent to poor countries, the paper said.

The purpose of FreeRepublic.com's multiple message boards is to limit the topics for each board to particular topics. Posting the same message on all the boards defeats the purpose of multiple-boards for special topics. It is very annoying to see the same message on every bulletin board. PLEASE! DO THE READERS A FAVOR. STOP CROSS-POSTING YOUR MESSAGES!

States make 'unclaimed' asset grab Idle accounts target of cash-hungry treasuries By Brendan January, CBS.MarketWatch.com Last Update: 6:55 PM ET Nov. 9, 2003 NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Have you ever had that sudden feeling that you've lost touch with someone for a long time? If that someone is a mutual fund or a bank, it's best to reestablish contact. In the past two years, states have been aggressively pursuing "unclaimed property" -- savings accounts, stocks, insurance policies, safety deposit boxes, retirement accounts -- that can be seized if an account is unused for several years or the owner cannot be...
