Thousands of homes were plunged into darkness after a power cut in north London. More than 2,800 people were affected by the blackout which struck parts of Muswell Hill just after 8.15 last night. EDF Energy said electricity was restored in some areas after 10 minutes but others were affected for three hours as engineers battled to repair a fault in an underground cable. The blackout comes a week after one of the biggest electrical failures in London.

<p>National Grid's London Power Failure Angers Mayor, Commuters Aug. 29 (Bloomberg) -- National Grid Transco Plc, owner of the U.K.'s power network, said a failure in south London led to a blackout that shut subways in the world's second-biggest financial center, disrupting travel for a quarter of a million people.</p>

<p>Electricity was restored to London within an hour of the outage, which was blamed on a failure in the National Grid. But the city's transport services were badly affected.</p> <p>London Mayor Ken Livingstone estimated that 250,000 people were caught in the London Underground when the outage hit at about 6:15 p.m. (1:15 p.m. ET) as commuters were heading home from work.</p>

London Power Blackout Halts Subway Services, Spokesman Says Aug. 28 (Bloomberg) -- A power blackout in central and southwest London has halted subway services, a London Underground spokesman said. The majority of London Underground networks are affected, said the spokesman, who declined to be identified. Trains are stuck in tunnels, the spokesman said. The power failure was caused by a National Grid circuit failure, the spokesman said.
