LONDON (Dow Jones)--London and other parts of the southeastern U.K. are suffering widespread power outages Thursday evening.
Gillian Home, spokeswoman at grid operator National Grid Transco PLC (NGG) confirmed the outages but couldn't comment further.
"We're trying to get to the bottom of it here," Home said.

Am I correct in think grid synchronization is handled via radio transmission of a timing signal?
If so, sending a false time code would have results much like the blackouts seen in the US and UK.

Let us remember that the UK is undergoing it's hottest summer in recorded history. It has never reached 100 F in the UK since they took measurements til this summer. People might be taxing the system at record rates.
Or they could have caught a bad virus, human error, etc.
