Last night Twitter suffered the largest security breach in its 14-year-history. Barack Obama, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and billionaires Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates were among many prominent US figures targeted by hackers. Their accounts all tweeted a link to a Bitcoin account where the hackers promised followers they would pay back double whatever was sent to it. The Bitcoin accounts, which can be watched live by anyone, were shown to be in receipt of over a hundred thousand dollars before the tweets were taken down. Twitter have said it was a “co-ordinated” attack targeting its employees...

For years, conservatives have been called conspiracy nutters for suggesting that Twitter was actively censoring its users — but now we know the truth. During yesterday’s high-profile disaster, in which hackers gained access to many of the top accounts on the site, screenshots of the platform’s administration panel were released showing administrators have the ability to blacklist accounts from being searched for or being allowed to trend on the app. Of course, Twitter is now suspending anyone for sharing the screenshot above – not because it’s fake – but because they’re desperate to save whatever shred of credibility still remains....

Hackers attacked two of Facebook’s official Twitter accounts Friday night.
