If you ask Paul Looney, a Houston defense attorney, about the Twin Peaks biker case, he’ll tell you there’s one person who knows more about it than anyone else alive: his trial-preparation specialist, Roxanne Avery. An entire wall of her home office in Norman, Okla., is covered with wallet-size mug shots of the nearly 200 bikers arrested, as well as photographs of the nine men who died that day, seven years ago, after a violent brawl in a Waco parking lot. Each picture is layered with Post-it Notes and details about the subjects: ages, road names (Cheech, Chain, Drama, Sidetrack,...

In 2007, when I first met Jeff Pike, he had just finished an eleven-mile bicycle ride. He was wearing shorts, a T-shirt, and tennis shoes. We were at his two-story home that he had built on some secluded property five miles outside of Conroe, north of Houston. He was a good-looking guy, then 51 years old, and he wore his salt-and-pepper hair in a crewcut. As he handed me a bottled water, he gave me the most cheerful of grins. “Not what you expected, huh?” he asked. Not exactly. At the time, I was told by law enforcement officers that...

Biker Jeff Battey thought that after the McLennan County District Attorney’s Office dismissed charges against him and the remaining Twin Peaks defendants, it was not too much to ask to have all records of his 2015 arrest destroyed so he could move on with his life. It appears that won’t happen. Now Battey, a former Marine who still has a bullet in his arm from the May 2015 Twin Peaks shootout, is threatening to sue the DA’s office for malicious prosecution, his attorney said. Waco attorney Seth Sutton, said a district attorney’s office representative recently told him that the office...

A federal judge lifted a stay Friday in the civil rights lawsuits filed by more than 100 bikers arrested after the 2015 Twin Peaks shootout in Waco and said the lawsuits can proceed. U.S. District Judge Alan Albright’s ruling during a 40-minute teleconference with attorneys in the cases does not include the two dozen bikers with pending criminal cases in McLennan County, only those with civil suits pending whose criminal cases have been dismissed or those who were never indicted. The lawsuits allege McLennan County, city of Waco and state officials violated the plaintiffs’ civil rights by wrongfully arresting the...

Dallas attorney Clint Broden alleges in a motion in the case of his client, Twin Peaks biker Matthew Clendennen, that McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna is under federal investigation for selective prosecution for political gain. Broden, who represents former member of the Scimitars group member Matthew Clendennen, filed motions Friday morning questioning Reyna's credibility as a prosecutor in the Twin Peaks shootout cases, saying the district attorney made decisions on which defendants to prosecute based on his political interests. "On Oct. 18, 2017, the defense received what appears to be very credible information indicating that Reyna has been, and...

The defense in the trial of Dallas Bandido Christopher Jacob “Jake” Carrizal may start its rebuttal of the accusations against him this week, When the defense finally gets its turn, three mysteries, one old and two new, might be solved. The old mystery is why the security guards the Twin Peaks restaurant hired never showed up on May 17, 2015. “If I owned a security guard business, and one of the largest, if not the largest restaurant and bar in town hired my company, I would definitely show up,” an attorney not associated with the criminal case said. I am...
