RINO, of course, stands for “Republican in Name Only.” And while the tea party movement has helped place them on the endangered species list, there are still a few still running around posing a serious danger to limited government, individual liberty and fiscal conservatism. In fact, one was spotted in Carson City just last week. There were two bills in the state Senate – one to ban Cheetos, Twinkies and cupcakes from public schools, and another to force auto repair shops to check YOUR tire pressure under penalty of law – in which one, and only one liberal Republican voted...

SACRAMENTO — An issue that briefly brought President Barack Obama ridicule on the campaign trail last year is gaining traction in California, where air regulators are seeking to mandate proper tire inflation as a way to reduce fuel consumption. The state Air Resources Board today adopted a resolution requiring auto repair shops to check tire pressure every time drivers bring in their vehicle for maintenance, oil changes and smog tests. The next step is to develop detailed rules to implement the mandate, which will take effect in July 2010. Regulators say widespread awareness of having properly inflated tires could lead...

Calif. tire rule aims to pump up fuel efficiency By DON THOMPSON Associated Press Writer SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California officials have decided to require auto repair shops to check tire pressure, a move they say will save millions of gallons of gasoline. The state Air Resources Board on Thursday adopted a resolution requiring repair shops to check tire pressure whenever they perform maintenance, oil changes and smog tests, beginning in July 2010. Regulators hope the idea spreads to other states. The U.S. Department of Energy has estimated that proper tire inflation can boost gas mileage by about 3.3 percent. President...

The Tire Pressure Strategy was identified as one of these Early Actions. While current Federal law requires auto manufactures to install tire pressure monitoring systems in all new vehicles beginning September 1, 2007, owners of older vehicles will lack this important tool to help them reduce their climate change emissions. ARB staff is currently investigating various options to ensure that tire pressures in older vehicles are also properly maintained.
