Tire pressure check will save money, gas and lives (government regulates EVERYTHING)
California Air Resources Board ^ | March 26, 2009 | Dimitri Stanich

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Today, the Air Resources Board adopted a regulation that will require California's automotive maintenance industry to check the tire pressure of every vehicle they service.

Effective July 1, 2010, this rule, one of 44 early action measures required by AB 32, will annually:

Eliminate 700,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions; Reduce the state's fuel consumption by 75 million gallons; and, Extend the average tire's useful life by 4,700 miles.

[snip] The cost of implementing the regulation balanced with the benefits from the measures will save the average Californian 12 dollars per year. About 38 percent of vehicles on the road in California today have severely under inflated tires, six pounds under manufacturer's recommendations. As well as seriously reducing the vehicle's handling capabilities, under inflation can cause irreparable damage, reduce tread life and force the engine to work harder thus increasing the amount of fuel needed.

Oh, whatever shall we do about this national epidemic in America of people driving around with underinflated tires?

"Reducing our environmental footprint will reinvigorate our economy by establishing California as the lead source of technological innovation, diversifying our state's fuel sources, creating jobs and helping efforts to avert climate change which threatens the state's ecosystem."

Oh, ok. I guess without these great environmental regulations our unemployment rate would now be 20%.

Maybe we can change the state motto to the Properly Inflated Tire State or the PITS whichever you prefer.

So, we likely will end up paying an extra $5 or $10 every tme we bring a car in for an oil change? Hey, I have a tire gauge in my car, and an air pump in my garage. I think I can manage to do this myself.

That is one of the reasons I never liked self-service gas stations. It did away with those kind of services.

Only if your tires are under inflated. Keeping your tires inflated saves real bucks, and as mentioned above, it's good for your drive train and motor.

I compare it to bicycles.

Peddling a bicycle on low inflated tires, ya gotta work twice as hard to keep going. Same with a motor.

We literally only “take the car in for servicing” for the mandatory smog checks.

Actually that’s probably right. At all these shops the mechanic has to punch in and out on every job. The shop is charging $50-100/hour. That 10 mins mandatory tire check is going to cost you.

The problem is the government regulating and mandating it. I bet if a repair shop offered the service for free (checking tirepressure when performing other maintenance) customers would like it.

Look at it this way; if you maintain your "ideal" weight, you will have a better quality of life, but do you want the government to force you to do so?

10 minutes?

No, it only takes 1 minute to check 4 tire. There won't be a charge to check your tire pressure, if they don't have to use their compressors to get it right.

Like I said, I keep mine right up. My vehicle and wallet love it.

I agree.

However, the fact is, if tens of millions of vehicle tires were properly inflated, the reduction in added pollution, fuel, and drive train repairs would be reduced significantly.
