The suspected Islamic extremist who killed about 20 people after taking party-goers hostage inside a gay club in Orlando has been identified. Law enforcement sources have identified the shooter, who was wielding an assault rifle and a handgun, as US citizen Omar Mateen, from Port St. Lucie in Florida. That Canada is most certainly a myth, crafted to make Canadians feel better about themselves. But like most myths it has some truth to it. And it is hard to imagine the kind of riots...

If you believe John Kerry, President Bush has won all the important arguments about national security policy and strategy since September 11, and for the rest of the century. -- snip -- Apparently, it's because they don't believe what Messrs. Kerry and Edwards are saying to the American people at this stage in the campaign. Mr. Dean said it best, when asked at the Democratic convention about the similarity between Bush and Kerry positions. His response was, in effect, that no one believes what people say in party conventions to the national audience. The reason the left- leaning supporters of...

Big Terrible Thing This is important at any time, but is crucial now. The next president may well be forced to shepherd us through the first nuclear event since World War II, the first terrorist attack or missile attack. "Man has never had a weapon he didn't use," Ronald Reagan said in conversation, and we have been most fortunate man has not used these weapons to kill in the past 50 years. But half...

April 6, 2002 As a tactic, terrorism often achieves its goal It's a horrible truth: Terrorists frequently get what they want Stewart Bell National Post The recent wave of Palestinian suicide bombings and their apparent success at dramatically reshaping the conflict in the Middle East has led analysts to an inescapable but unsettling conclusion: Terrorism works. The events since Sept. 11 had left the opposite impression. Osama bin Laden gained only misery from his attacks. Al-Qaeda has been severely damaged and the Taliban regime that harboured it is gone. But the Palestinians have made terror work for them, a disturbing...
